Her correct title at the time would've been HRH The Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, as her princess title outranked her Duchess one.

KillingMeDeftly · 27/11/2022 14:00

But yes, the Edinburgh title will always be associated with Prince Philip rather than the late Queen!

*Though she can’t become PR until Anne dies AND her father becomes king IIRC.

So another 30 ish yrs.*

Even then there's no guarantee. Anne wasn't made Princess Royal until the 90s, even though her great-aunt Princess Mary died in the 60s.

From memory (and without checking the wording of the official announcement) I had the definite impression that the title was conferred by HMQ as a mark of her pride and affection for her daughter and particularly in recognition of all her sterling work.

There is no knowing how the Cambridge children will grow up or what the Royal family will look like in 20-30 years time so it's all speculation.

I do think it's a bit off of Charles not to give it to Edward as it was publicly stated to be HMQ's intention, quite a long time ago I think, someone posted the Buck Pal notice about it on twitter today.

I think it's reasonable to allow a decent time to pass before conferring the title in cases like this (unlike hereditary titles which automatically pass to the next in line on the death of the holder). HMQ could have done it in the last year or so but I can understand she didn't want it done in her lifetime. Maybe Charles will announce it around the time of the coronation.
Personally I think the DM and others are just stirring the pot with made up rumours regarding this, particularly regarding Charlotte. They really should leave the children out of their mischief making.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 14:03

If the title hadn’t already been promised to Edward, I’d think it was just right for it to be kept for Charlotte.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 14:05

@ShamedBySiri very much agree with your last paragraph.

Royal bottom you say?🤭😂
I can assure you my bottom never looked that pert and I rode for 40yrs! Definitely sturdy.

I'd love to have a royal companion. I'd ask for a list of activities along the lines of:

  • Afternoon tea for us all
  • Please bring me either of the Hemsworth brothers
  • Please fiddle about with my hair and give me a little shoulder massage

Loved Lady Glenconner's book (which as Lady in Waiting to Margaret, isn't that far different to my list above😂) What a rich and full, yet tragic in parts life Lady G has led.

Poor Luke, always forgotten about.

I call them The Greater Hemsworth (Chris, obvs), the Lesser Hemsworth (Liam), and the Other One (Luke).

I think getting rid of the LoW role is very sensible, and I also like that the Ladies who worked for Liz 2 will continue to have a small role instead of being dropped completely.

Agree re the ruching on Mathilde's gown. It looks like she's tied it up to avoid getting it wet while paddling.

ShamedBySiri · 27/11/2022 14:08

Found it. Here's the Palace announcement, made I think around the time of the wedding of Edward to Sophie.
"....The Prince of Wales have also agreed"

Will he really go back in this public statement?

My money's on an announcement around the time of the coronation.

Royal Style: Charles and his wee boots, and please - plenty of (Preloved) bling!
TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 14:15

Well he’s the King now, so yes, he could legitimately go back on it. Whether he will or not, I don’t know. For all we know Edward doesn’t even want the title anymore, and maybe doesn’t his son to have to have it either.

ShamedBySiri · 27/11/2022 14:19

Thinking about it I'm quite surprised they made that announcement so long ago - I can't think of anything special Edward had done at that time to merit such an honour.

On the other hand E&S have pretty much taken over the DofE awards since Philip retired haven't they? In which case it seems entirely appropriate for them to have the title.

I'm sticking with Coronation gifts and awards and pronouncements. Surely there will be a few?

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 14:25

He wouldn’t have had to have done anything special. It would have been a wedding gift. It’s not really contingent on one’s actions, I don’t think.

SenecaFallsRedux · 27/11/2022 14:32

HMQ could have done it in the last year or so but I can understand she didn't want it done in her lifetime.

She couldn't grant it because Charles became Duke of Edinburgh on his father's death. It merged with the crown when Charles became king, so he can now grant it in a new creation.

One thing I wonder, what do people in Scotland think about Edward being Duke of Edinburgh? That might come into it. The King could make Edward Duke of Wessex or of somewhere else.

SenecaFallsRedux · 27/11/2022 14:38

Did the article refer to "sources" in its reporting?

Articles referring to "sources" used to say that Prince Charles's regnal name would be George VII.

justasking111 · 27/11/2022 14:41

I've worked for two charities and a school Edward and Sophie supported. They've quietly worked their socks off. They're both really lovely no airs and graces supporters albeit on a lower tier than HMQ Charles. Edward and Anne are such work horses.

BeaLola · 27/11/2022 15:51

I think its a shame that the Queens promise is not being adhered to but maybe Charles has a bigger title in mind for Edward & Sophie - I hope so as otherwise it seems mean

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 15:54

Well we don’t know that it isn’t. There’s been no official announcement so anything that’s been said is just conjecture at this stage.

Granted they do a lot compared to say, the Waleses, but I'm not sure any royal can be classed as a workhorse!

gluenotsoup · 27/11/2022 18:06

I think Anne probably is to be fair

eggandonion · 27/11/2022 18:33

Are there a limited number of dukedoms, or can new ones be invented? Can Sophie and Edward be Cornwall, or is Camilla still Duchess of Cornwall?
I don't know where I would like to be Duchess of, or Countess or even Marchioness.

gingercat02 · 27/11/2022 18:56

William and Kate are D&D of Cornwall now and the Argyll title too iirc and a random NI one too (possibly Strathearn, I'm from NI before anyone gets annoyed)
I'm sure there are plenty of Dukedom's available but I think Edward and Sophie deserve the D&D of Edinburgh

justasking111 · 27/11/2022 19:05

Edward and Sophie got the ugliest house, Wessex no longer exists, one little tiara. They've been at the bottom of the pecking order for some reason I can't fathom.

Because he is literally at the bottom. It’s how it works isn’t it. It’s kind of deeply unpleasant when you see work output Vs reward. Kind of like being a normal person, but with servants and jewels.

baffling.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 19:13

It’s just how it works. It’s not supposed to be a popularity contest. An unlucky accident of birth in some respects, a very privileged one in others!

I’m quite sure he’s not crying into his weetabix every morning...

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 19:18

Not meaning to sound short there - posting whilst trying a new recipe...never a good idea!

I quite like their home. I certainly wouldn’t say no. Grin

lipstickwoman · 27/11/2022 19:27

Bagshot is a massive country pile really close to Windsor.

That's not a short straw in my book.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 27/11/2022 19:32

Yes quite. From all accounts (taken with the usual grain of salt, naturally) their children had a very close relationship with HMQ because they could go up to see her so often, and Sophie became a trusted DIL/friend. Not a short straw in my book either.
