Reminisce about clubbing/going out wear from back in the happy/glam house days of 90s/2000s

I was reminiscing about old clothes I used to have and was thinking about my old going out/clubbing wear in 90s/2000s:

  • Karen Millen top - crochet blue/silver/black with long sleeves and quite cropped
  • Karen Millen crochet long top with short sleeves and deep v neck, gold, aqua/turquoise
  • Karen Millen sport quilted mini dress in black with the sport logo down one side
  • DKNY Padded black jacket with logo
  • Karen Millen dark denim sort of material pencil skirt with a diamante strip across top part just below waist/hip
  • Coast draped black top sleeveless top with metal twisted straps
  • Jigsaw sleeveless beige knit top with diamante in sort of diagonal stripes across it
  • Peter Werth (?) they made these skimpy little black or other colour dresses in sort of stretch material.
  • Trousers from Oasis which were denim colour but had silver sparkle over them
  • Karen Millen black sleeveless top with a turquoise sheer back
  • Karen Millen black combat trousers in a sort of shiny/non shiny material
  • D&G Sport short sleeved red shirt in stretch jersey material
  • Karen Millen strappy shoes/sandals with a small heel - really comfy!
  • Dress I got from a shop in Portobello Road, can't think of the brand - sort of navy blue long, sleeveless and cut away/up at the front leg side
  • Karen Millen black embellished halter neck jewelled dress - above the knee or knee length and backless, still have that one!

I did wear loads of other stuff which was not expensive. All sadly gone - I did keep one of the Karen Millen crochet tops but it got broken/torn so I got rid of it! As I was an 8-10 I could fit into this then but not now. I did have sizeable boobs though compared to most of my friends who were tiny bust wise and they gave me a spaghetti strap top for Christmas once, which I wore once to be nice, but it so wasn't me! Grin

Anyone else have any memories of clubbing/going out wear?

Shimmer body lotion from the body shop - some spiced vanilla type scent that smelled really sickly sweet and Christmassy.
Diesel jeans and corset top or those handkerchief style ones.
Ghost perfume.
Lip gloss and masses of kohl.

Lots of body suits as well at one point and a brief spell if waistcoats

I saw a woman today wearing a scoop neck top which looked exactly like a navy bodysuit I had (short sleeved), I had other ones too. I had an artisan sort of mid rose pink v neck jumper (Greenwich market) and used to wear this over the bodysuit. One day I had Ultima II eyeshadow which I used to do rainbow 🌈 effects with on my eyes and I went to see parents friends who had a son a couple of years older than me and we disappeared clubbing to The Fridge (Brixton).

I had a great long sleeved mini dress with a fairly high neck (very Robert Palmer videos) which I wore to death. It was a slightly heavier material than the usual stuff. Also a boyfriend bought me a Bardot sleeved Katherine Hamnett black mini dress and massive jewel blue clip on earrings from a boutique in Wimbledon when I was 19. Clubs then were Mud Club, Wag, Brain, Colliseum in Vauxhall before and after it got glam. And getting drunk on dry martinis 🍸 in some posh Sloane club on Kings Road! Had black Pied a Terre suede heeled shoes which had a sort of S shape at the front.

I used to be a podium dancer in a few London house and garage clubs back in the day and it was all about the tiny crop tops, hot pants and long heeled boots. How I danced in them for hours I will never know!

my favourite dress was from river island and it was a black silk mini slip dress, almost like underwear, but with clasps on the straps like dungarees. They had a habit of popping undone so I’d have to be stitched into it before going out. Oh to be that slim now! I had legs for days and was able to go out bra-less.

Also dancer!
Cowboy hats and bikinis!
And fur coats Confused

Snugglebum99 · 28/10/2022 21:22

Snob, Chelsea girl, Morgan, Jane Norman. I lived in a black A- line leather mini skirt. It cost £40 from Snob back in 1993. I was tiny. If only i could be that small Again

Two pieces from Morgan - hanker chief tops and mini skirts!
Belly chains
Hair mascara

Yes I used to wear almost like a long black cardigan with a huge fur collar over my bikini top and hot pants to dance in. Must’ve been so hot!

From teens to about 24 ish....
I wore a cream Morgan mini everywhere...
Miss Selfridge tops with it & black sandals or knee high boots.
A white River Island mini dress, also a strappy white dress from Pilot.
My bronze toned pencil skirt with a black top. Etc.

Feeling poor next to the local 'Moschino girls' haha.
But I was pretty and thin anyway.

I loved a good UK garage night. Or a trance or drum n bass night eg Slinky, or even 'Jazz Juice' which everyone went to on the pier approach.

Laquila · 28/10/2022 22:40

Haha @PotatoFamily I remember those cardigans!!

Had similar cardigan but not necessarily wearing it clubbing.

For me clubbing was shorter skirt the better or dress... able to walk in platform shoes.

I did like my smart black Karen Millen trousers with a little top as the trousers didn't seem to be sweaty.

I do not know how I managed to walk in the shoes I wore especially when I was off my tits!

My best friend wore lots of things I didn't wear and sort of copied Victoria Beckham's style down to the hair.

I had long hair which I don't think I highlighted to death as I did later, dyed it in salon, copper once.

Any Londoners here recall a bar which was in High Street Kensington, sort of behind Barkers Dept Store, it had a number for a name but had a dance floor downstairs? Used to go there when we were too poor to club properly!

Early 2000s and I'd be out in wheels and dollbaby (clothes to snare a millionaire) or Arrogant Cat Grin. I had the cutest W&DB polka dot mini that I'd wear with a pink corset ooh!!

emmaw1405 · 29/10/2022 21:07

Black velvet corset and skirt with big bows on the back from Wit and Wisdom worn with a large diamante choker. Black zip up top and matching tiny skirt that I think was also from Wit and Wisdom. Also had a white skirt and white patterned silk dress from there.
Black PVC tight trousers with a bright pink satin Wit and Wisdom corset or a bright blue cropped Chinese style top also from Wit and Wisdom. Met my husband in Es Paradis in that outfit!
Black cheongsam with orange, yellow and white flowers - I loved that dress!
Red or Dead shoes.
Black lace see through dress that I wore a Wonderbra and big pants under.
Also remember the tartan trend - we used to get tartan mini-skirts from the rag market in Birmingham.
Loads of Karen Millen stuff - white jacket and skirt and a black skirt with long sleeved tight zip up top/jacket with long boots.
I think it was Vicky Martin who did a collection called Angels with Dirty Faces and I had a tiny lilac dress that a piece of string at the back. Also
And Modzart trousers plus a John Paul Gaultier jacket that I got in Ibiza, denim with faces all over it.

I loved my early 90's clubbing days!

West London here and was raving at house clubs from around '87 (aged 17) so that period was all dungarees and 100% Mambo Tshirts as well as Indian 'ethnic' little crop tops and cut of shorts with kickers or reebok high tops. Before that (so age 15/16) I was at Mud Club/Astoria type clubs, so lots of Boy/Vivienne Westwood/Kensington Market and Hyper Hyper. My favourite of that era was a tartan Vivienne Westwood mini kilt with a white Pam Hogg body and black cowboy boots with silver toe caps (like George Michael in the Faith video).

This is my era too. Started with acid house at warehouse "do's" and clubs like Camden Palace and Astoria wearing very hippy like clothes then went more underground with clubs like Shoom, Phuture, Gas Club, Enter the Dragon, Yellow Book, Monkey Drum, various Boys Own events wearing Pam Hogg, Benetton Suits, Karen Milan, John Galliano (unfortunately!) and various pairs of Patrick Cox Wannabe Loafers. Was about half the size I am now too! Great times.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 29/10/2022 21:50

God this thread is good. Would love to go back to one night back then and get dressed up with my friends, all excited about our new clothes. So many things people have listed that I remember. Ken market how I miss you. I remember coming to London as a teenager and going back up north with outrageous shoes and PVC stuff from Kensington and Camden. Wearing a wonder bra and pvc hot pants to go to Gatecrasher. Raves in fields in combats and cropped tops.

ladygindiva · 29/10/2022 22:06

I wore enormous baggy combats in a sort of swooshy silky parachute material that rustled when I walked. They were so low slung I almost had pubes showing. I'd wear a super cropped top with them, which was ok as I was a size 6, at that point my diet was mainly e and water. The odd meal midweek days.

BobDear · 29/10/2022 23:19

@DialSquare

Oh so much crossover!

Yep to most of those. Shoom, Trip at Astoria, Spectrum at Heaven on a Monday night (my favourite), Clink Street, Future, Loud Noise, Enter the Dragon at The Park every Friday and all the Sunrise, Biology and Energy raves as well.

Lots of Karen Millen crop tops under dungarees - what a 'comfortable' time in terms of fashion!

Hyper Hyper for when you were flush. Ken Market for when you were ok. Camden Market (or charity shops) when you were a bit skint (apart from Rokit in Camden which was one of the first vintage shops and therefore £££)

I loved Hyper Hyper. So many happy memories on this thread.

Iamthewombat · 30/10/2022 00:32

The tartan trend was about 1994/1995 I think. I had a very short pink & blue kilt that I wore with a pink cropped T-shirt, and a short pink tartan pinafore dress. I remember wearing the latter on a night out and some man saying, “ooh, you’re vacuum packed into that!”. Luckily he was fit so I didn’t mind.

Shmithecat2 · 30/10/2022 00:35

Really wild catsuits from odd shops and Camden Market, usually worn with DMs and a biker jacket. Or hot pants (Pucci prints) with black tights and DMs. Those were the days!

I LOVED Heaven on a Monday. Went every Monday night of my Uni life in the early 2000's!!
