How did you feel after having longer hair cropped trendy short?

For years my thin hair has been below my shoulder with a few side layers......it is very fine and poker straight and all I do with it is clip it up and wear it pulled back out of the way. As a young mum of 2 our parents sometimes offer to babysit which gives me chance to get glammed up and have a night out with DH......... When I get ready and blow my hair I feel I just don't like how it looks. For the past few years I have loved how some of the celebs have cut their hair in a really short look that I think is so stylish.
I have chatted with friends about going short, all of them are still long, and some feel I may regret having it cut, all of us are still long haired and I will be the first of us to go trendy short.
I am lucky that I am small and petite still and I think that a cute short style will really suit me but up to now the only major supporter for having it cut off is my Mum!!
I have attached some hair styles for fine straight hair to show what sort of look I would like and if anyone has had the same dilemma it would be good to see any of your style ideas, hear what you decided and if you are happy how it worked out.........

Ultimately, you should go for whatever you think will make you happy (obviously) but I would say / if you've always had shoulder lengthish hair, I would go for a middle ground first (maybe a modern blunt bob) before committing to a very short style like those you've pictured.

A couple of people I know went from long to very short and found it quite jarring as it was such a big change in one go.

Also styling hair is harder the shorter it is so doing a shorter but not super short cut to get used to that is handy, to see if you can be arsed with more upkeep!

Zooeyzo · 25/10/2022 21:38

I'm lucky I suit both styles well but I feel more myself with cropped hair. Before that it was down to my waist but I found styling it to much of a hassle. Does your hair grow fast OP? Mine does so I just tend to cut it and not worry.

Swissnotswiss · 25/10/2022 21:41

I've just done this! I was worried I'd hate it but actually it's great. Only downside is I now need monthly trims - even after 2 weeks I feel it starts to look straggly.

And if you did for for a shorter cut, these are some nice options that don't feel dated.

At first I felt awful. It seemed sooo much shorter on my head than the photo, but when I looked they were the same. I felt like that scene where Fleabag drags her sister to the stylist who pulls the picture from the bin to show that’s exactly what she asked for. But then after a few days it felt really cool. I noticed other women with short hair too. I’m growing it out a bit longer again now but I enjoyed it. I did feel (just on a personal level) more pressure. I thought it was easier to look slobby if you know what I mean. If I’m doing the ballet or football run on a Saturday morning I can put my hair in a bun, some hoop earrings, and joggers, and look comfy but still nice. With shorter hair I felt I had to make a bit more effort to look nice.

Kanaloa · 25/10/2022 21:45

And yes it’s constant maintenance! I needed a trim on he way home from the hairdressers.

Bemyclementine · 25/10/2022 21:49

I went from long hair (mid back) to short. Not quite as short as your pics, had one side slightly longer . I really liked it, I'd had long hair all my life, it made such a change.

I enjoyed washing it, but it was a faff to style although my hair is thicker with a tendancy to wave and flick up.

I also found I had to (or felt like I had to) make more effort to look nice. I find it easier with long hair.

RefuseTheLies · 25/10/2022 21:52

Cut mine short last year. Liked it, but I’ve had to spend more time, and use more styling products and heat on my short hair than I ever did with long hair. And I hate that. I’m growing it out again.

Theydoyaknow · 25/10/2022 21:54

Takes an age to grow out and can look dreadful in the in between stage.

Nolosomi · 25/10/2022 21:56

I did it once and none of my clothes suited me anymore! It was such a shock. My neck also felt so cold. I grew it out but it was so slow!

weekendninja · 25/10/2022 22:02

I went from past shoulder length to a pixie cut years ago.

I'm quite petite and thought if would suit me...people said it did but I hated it.

It sounds a bit silly but i felt like I lost my femininity. I also think I looked like a boy.

It took an age to grow out and plenty of expensive hair cuts to keep it in some sort of order.

Parentswriting · 25/10/2022 23:08

I went from a Bob (photo 1) to a spiky short cut (photo 2)

It was the best thing ever - no more straightening, able to finger dry - perfect 😊

@Parentswriting proper funky hair.

Weatherwax13 · 25/10/2022 23:18

I've done this twice in my life and was so excited but then hugely regretted it both times. I just felt very, idk, plain?
I do have a theory that a lot of us are wired as either a short hair or long hair person. We seem to gravitate quickly back to our default after trying a change!

Sooverthemill · 26/10/2022 08:33

A haircut like this is lol but takes a lot of maintenance so a minimum of 6 weeks between cuts (4 is best). I had hair like this for a about 10 years and hated it tbh. Always looked the same but longer hair you can do stuff to

Carriefrompreston · 26/10/2022 09:02

Hi everyone..............it sounds like easy short hair isn't as easy as I thought.........I will have to have a re think........ I so like the idea of easy to manage short hair but it does sound like there are other downsides.......... thank you all for giving me your thoughts.

I think long hair is a bit over rated, myself, a bit boring unless it’s ultra thick and lovely (mine certainly isn’t). But I also think when you go short you end up feeling like you need to wear more make up to compensate. I second going for a short choppy bob first and see how you feel with that - easy to go shorter, takes a long time to grow back!

ImAvingOops · 26/10/2022 09:16

I did it once - I really liked it but I do think it made me look older and as a pp said, I think done people are naturally 'long haired' and do I did gravitate back to my original style.
That said, if your hair isn't thick and strong, or is a bit straggly, then getting rid of some length is a good thing. I really like the blunt mid length bobs because they make hair look thicker and stronger. It's shorter but without sacrificing the appearance of long hair.

FeralWitch · 26/10/2022 09:21

I’m a short hair person, but I think you have to find a hairdresser who really knows what they’re doing and specialises in short hair.

I’ve got thick, awkward hair, and recognise the stress posters highlight above - needing endless products, styling every day, etc etc. Long hair was an even bigger nightmare.

But since I’ve found my current hairdresser, I can literally leave the house without even drying it. A bit of product rubbed through, and bingo. It’s changed my life.

MrJi · 26/10/2022 09:29

I had my shoulder length curly hair cropped to very , very short. I loved it. So easy, it suited my face, and it always looked good. No messy hair days. Tiny amount of shampoo to wash it, not long enough to ever be in bad condition. I had bleached mine too much and wanted it all cut out as I also have fine hair so it was in terrible condition.
I am tempted to go back to it. My hair is pretty short again but not as short as a crop, (chin length). The only thing putting me off is that I am fatter now, so it might not suit me as much anymore. As you are delicate then I think it will look fab.
It was the only haircut I have ever had that got compliments daily. And the only time I have felt happy with my hair.

TheOGCCL · 26/10/2022 09:29

I’ve done it but I never cropped it short in one go. I moved through a range of styles, bit by bit. I found:

  1. As PP said some of my clothes didn’t suit as well, in particular low necks
  2. I felt more confident, there was nothing to hide behind
  3. I felt more put together
  4. I felt, partly as a result of 3, funnily enough, that my overall aura was older
  5. I had to have it cut much more often - but I think that is offset by less styling needed day to day
  6. It revealed I have a low hairline at the back which is awkward if you want very short hair - instead of a fringe trim I was going in to just have the back bit shaved
  7. My neck felt cold at first
  8. It held its style on non hair wash days, rather than looking limp/flat
MrJi · 26/10/2022 09:32

This was basically the cut I had.

I cut mine short a couple of months ago and found it liberating. My hair sounds very different from yours though: lots and lots of thick, curly hair. Everything was a faff before, curly styling or blow drying would take ages (1-2 hours was not unusual), now I can wash it, put a bit of mousse and leave it - or if I want to wear it straight, only takes 10-15 minutes to do it. For me, it’s one less thing I have to worry about every day.

On the other hand, I think a lot of people regret it. The hairdresser asked me several times if I was sure before chopping it all off Grin

Mine is not quite as short as the examples you posted though. This is the photo I took to the hair salon, chose this because this lady also has curly hair so I knew it would nice curly or straight.

justasoul · 26/10/2022 09:53

Oh, and I’m neither small nor petite 🙈but it definitely suits me. I agree with TheOGCCL about feeling more put together, I feel a lot more elegant now that I’m not constantly with a messy bun.

Artygirlghost · 26/10/2022 09:53

I have really thin hair too and every time I have tried to grow it into a bob I ended up cutting it short again. Currently have a blond pixie cut with a long fringe.

If I had ''normal'' hair I would go for shoulder length but unfortunately there is nothing I can do to make it thicker at this stage.

I think with short hair getting the colour right is important as well.
