How did you feel after having longer hair cropped trendy short?

For years my thin hair has been below my shoulder with a few side layers......it is very fine and poker straight and all I do with it is clip it up and wear it pulled back out of the way. As a young mum of 2 our parents sometimes offer to babysit which gives me chance to get glammed up and have a night out with DH......... When I get ready and blow my hair I feel I just don't like how it looks. For the past few years I have loved how some of the celebs have cut their hair in a really short look that I think is so stylish.
I have chatted with friends about going short, all of them are still long, and some feel I may regret having it cut, all of us are still long haired and I will be the first of us to go trendy short.
I am lucky that I am small and petite still and I think that a cute short style will really suit me but up to now the only major supporter for having it cut off is my Mum!!
I have attached some hair styles for fine straight hair to show what sort of look I would like and if anyone has had the same dilemma it would be good to see any of your style ideas, hear what you decided and if you are happy how it worked out.........

I did this when I was a youngun and still cheekboney enough to carry it off. Left the hairdressers feeling like Audrey Hepburn, went home, let myself into the house, swung the door closed and caught sight of myself in the mirror behind the door. In suprise, I said 'Hi Sam, what are you doing here?' before I realised that it was not my brother but my own reflection in the mirror.

Be warned.

I don't think I've ever fully recovered emotionally from that moment!

lightand · 26/10/2022 10:01

I thought about doing this recently too.
I started to look around. Soon realised that it was a lot of hairdresser visits. CHanged my mind.

ChonkyDonkey · 26/10/2022 10:06

How about something half way, that you can grow out easily if you don't like it or keep getting chopped if you feel braver, given time?

Go for it!!!!!
I went from long boob length hair to pixie in one foul swoop! I loved it and so did many others did. It looked way more stylish short. When it was long I did naff all with it most the time. I'm petite faced too. Over time though I did missed having it longer. It's chin length now but now I'm starting to feel it's not very stylish and considering chop again.

My current issue is I've dyed it dark brown and look washed out. That's a whole other thread though 😜

It's only hair, it will grow. My stance is do it. Yes I'll take year or so to grow to chin length if don't like it but better than wondering about it for years! X

Badger1970 · 26/10/2022 10:20

I did - it's a lot more maintenance and styling. I found I was having to go back every 4 to 5 weeks and it was very labour intensive.

I've let mine grow down to past jaw length and it's so much easier. I've gone about 10 weeks now and it's still fine.

Forfrigz · 26/10/2022 10:23

If it is really long then getting it to just past shoulder length will be a big change. If you get a really short cut it requires more maintenance and styling, I find. And if you want to grow it out it can go through phases of looking and behaving a bit odd. I've just grown mine from an above shoulder bob to just below shoulder, it felt like ages because when it sits on your shoulder it can take a really odd shape.
Having said that, those really short styles are super cute so if you're feeling bold and like you'd be up for the maintenance (regular trims, styling) of them, go for it.

user1471517095 · 26/10/2022 10:25

I'm just dithering about this right now. I have shoulder length hair. And a lot of it - my hairdresser said I have haven't got thick hair just a lot. It takes ages to blow dry and the nape hair has a corn flick at each side so it doesn't grow down straight. I just have it pinned up all the time so may as well cut it short. But then I'm worried I'll look like a man! I might take a look at Pinterest for some ideas before taking the plunge!

Zooeyzo · 26/10/2022 12:58

@justasoul yes I cut my hair in that style. So easy to style

BeanyBops · 26/10/2022 13:11

I went from mid back to above the shoulders bob after a good 15 years of wanting as long as possible. Didn't over think it and just went for it and now I love it! I feel liberated. Couldn't do a pixie with my fluffy curly hair type but I'd love them and think you should go for it.

MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 13:16

Depends on your hair. Mine is a lot higher maintenance in a short style than longer when I can just tie it back if I can't be arsed and have it trimmed every two months.

MavisChunch29 · 26/10/2022 13:17

Then I get fed up after a few months and start growing it out again.

StamppotAndGravy · 26/10/2022 13:24

Long bob is the worst of both. It needs far more styling because the weight won't pull it down but it's too short to tie back neatly. You've still lost a lot of length so it'll take an age to grow back. If you shave it, it will only take a year to hit your shoulders anyway.

I have very short hair. I look younger, it requires very little styling and I only get it cut once every 10 weeks. I leave it that long so that I can have a completely different style every time. This year I've had a bowl cut, a mullet and a classic feminine pixie.

Have you ever had a fringe? If you liked it, you'll probably like it short. If you hated it, probably best to keep it long!

It’s great, isn’t it? I think because it’s not super short you don’t need to trim it as often either - though I could probably do with a trim now Smile

Coffeepot72 · 26/10/2022 19:09

If I’m doing the ballet or football run on a Saturday morning I can put my hair in a bun, some hoop earrings, and joggers, and look comfy but still nice. With shorter hair I felt I had to make a bit more effort to look nice.

Yes! Longer hair made me feel feminine regardless of what I was wearing etc, and without it looking half decent was harder work. I posted quite a bit when I first had it cut, explaining that I looked/felt like Nicola Sturgeron - short and neat but not trendy and stylish (sorry Nic, if you’re reading this)!

Possiblynotever · 26/10/2022 19:24

I did it when my DC were little, no regrets. I do not style it ever, I only put some product to keep it from going flat.
You do need to find a GOOD hairdresser and unfortunately short cuts are not in style.
I personally do not like long hair as you either have the time to style it or you end up with a pony tail or bun everyday.
Not much personality.
I love the pixie haircut but you need to have amazing bones.
This is a sort of shag cut, neither long nor too short, it is adaptable and feminine.

😂

I probably looked more like Nicola than I’d like too! The type of haircut a Blyton character who was a ‘plain but jolly nice’ type would have.

WingingItSince1973 · 26/10/2022 19:33

My hair has been up and down like a yo yo over the years. Grew very long during lockdown. Had it cut to a shoulder length Bob then slightly shorter. Then one day I thought sod it and shaved the rest off 🤣 Not totally bald but super super short and I felt amazing. I spent beginning of year growing the fringe and top layers out but then took to the razor again 🤣

MadameSapphire · 26/10/2022 19:41

Following… 😊

CoffeandTiaMaria · 26/10/2022 19:49

I’ve had a really short pixie cut when younger but now my hair is silver I think it makes me look even older if short so I have a chin length straight bob.My hair is fine and reasonably thick but when it’s very short layers it looks really thin and flat despite using products.

Tontostitis · 26/10/2022 19:53

Loved it when I left the hairdressers but slowly dawned on me it was much harder to style, I had to wear makeup and actually I hated it and was heartbroken by the end of the week. Took 3 years to grow back.

JanePrentiss · 26/10/2022 20:02

I love love love pixies but, as a pixie yo yo-er what puts me off them is:

Max I can get away with is 6 weeks between cuts and that's really pushing it, so costs go up.

Products: I have really really fine hair and unless I put products throughout all of my hair then it had no texture, body, volume or style and looked like a flat man's haircut.

Fine hair: as above it looks manly and flat as a default look, and while it doesn't take ages to style I have to style it every day otherwise it looks shite.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 26/10/2022 20:11

I had cropped hair until I was 22, then a variety of short to long bobs and v. long flowing locks until my late 30s. Then I more or less stayed with a soft fringe, shaped around my face and the length resting on my shoulders and flicked up. I saw a miserable old jowly woman in a shop window and was about to ask why she was staring at me, then realised it was me!!!!!!
I never styled it, loved getting it trimmed, but was leaving 3 months at a time, and looking very thin-haired.
After spending a weekend obsessively looking at pictures of Anne Hathaway, I had what could be kindly described as a mediaeval peasant short short bob. It was so short, in fact, that I could barely tuck my hair behind my ears. I think I lasted 2 weeks before going back to my canny hairdresser, who simply chopped off my behind the ears bits then styled it into a simple crop. A la Anne Hathaway 😳

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
I look 20 years younger!!!!
I get it cut exactly every 4 weeks apart.
Just do it 😱You will feel absolutely liberated, carefree, tough and feminine, all at once.
And I definitely don't have a lovely pixie face 🤑But I don't care x

Coffeepot72 · 26/10/2022 20:13

Now my hair has re grown though, I’m really getting fed up with it - so I’m planning to go shorter one inch or so at a time, so that I won’t end up with a ‘Nicola’ again!

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 26/10/2022 20:17

no, I was wrong, I lasted just under a week before finally getting it shaved/clippered/ and I never style it, literally get out of bed, run a hand over it, and that's it 🙃

Notimetothink · 26/10/2022 20:21

I had all mine cut off.
No styling is required. I just spritz it with salt spray when I get up, give it a bit of a ruffle and I’m good to go. I’ve gone from looking like a dowdy middle aged grey person to someone who has a bit of life about her. Love it!!
