Im tempted to buy the check double cotton nightdress and wear it as a dress. I really love the check print. Do you think it would be suitable. It looks like a dress in the pictures?

mizu · 07/10/2022 07:27

Scottishmouse I'm thinking the same re selling a TOAST jumper. I have 5 now collected over the last few years and have spotted 2 I like on eBay and think surely I don't need 7 Grin

I'm consciously trying to steer myself away from blue this year as I am always drawn to it but would like another denim dress!

dudsville · 07/10/2022 07:34

@faustina "Does anyone else have days where everything looks dreadful on you, and then the next day, the identical things look fine?" Definitely! I blame hormone fluctuations, how do you make sense of it? I often wonder about people who get photographed all the time and whether they just put their faith in the fact that an outfit looked just fine before even if they're not feeling it on the day!

AmethystMoonShine · 07/10/2022 09:23

Thank you for all the shoe stretching/sizing thoughts and advice - much appreciated. I've had a notification that my size 6 loafers are on their way, so I'll see how they go first. the seriously consider how much and where the 5s need a stretch if the 6 is too large.

@mizu I'm not even going to admit to how many jumpers I own 😳
I think its because we moved to a very old cottage, which is very cold for 9 months of the year and so I have become obsessed! My previous house was a new build and always warm, sometimes too warm. I only owned a few jumpers and used to get annoyed that it was always too warm to wear a jumper in the house - I'd have to wait until I needed to venture outdoors. So I think now I have a 'need' for jumpers, I have got a little excited 😂

AmethystMoonShine · 07/10/2022 09:26

Has anyone else noticed that Toast appear to be selling copies of Bernie Sanders' inauguration mittens? I've had an email from Toast this morning "Freedom to Wander'...and they feature in that!

Laska2Meryls · 07/10/2022 10:13

Our house has a tendency to be cold in the north side rooms - I am resisting putting heating on - But I really recommend that navy Jigsaw merino cashmere tabard jumper I bought last week, its hardly been off my back especially in the evenings.
I often find cardigans too hot on my arms but this is perfect because it covers my shoulders and very top of arms .Also the neck is snug..

can I ask, have any of you used the Toast repair service? I have few clothes, many from Toast, and wear them super-heavily. Am wondering if the repair service is any good, as some unignorable holes have appeared…

Yes, I think it’s beautiful but you don’t (or at least I didn’t) get a choice on how you want it to look and it’s not invisible darning - they tend to do contrasting, and the decision is left to the ‘artisan’ who is doing it. I loved mine (not at home or I’d show you), but it is definitely for people who want to make a point about clothing longevity and being proud of that, rather than anything subtle.

ScottishMouse · 07/10/2022 16:12

@ilovecherries and @sunshineandsuddenshowers , it definitely isn’t always the case that you have no choice. I think it must depend on the repair specialist at the store you bring it to. I was at a workshop run by the repair specialist at the Edinburgh store recently and she talked about customer’s requests and preferences for their repairs, some wanting invisible mending, some have particular colours in mind, and others leaving it up to her. So I think it will depend.

Countmeout · 07/10/2022 16:41

Re the mending , I was disappointed to see they don’t do accessories for my big cashmere scarf has a hole. I would have quite liked a statement mend.

faustina · 07/10/2022 20:06

@AmethystMoonShine from one cold cottage dweller to another, I highly recommend the fairisle jumpers - that's what I wear on the very coldest days. Also double cashmere works (the men's cardigans in the John Lewis sale are very good except for their lack of pockets). I'm dreading this winter a bit, especially if we get power cuts. Once the brick and flint walls get cold it takes forever to heat them up again

AmethystMoonShine · 07/10/2022 09:26

Ha ha, i just had a look after reading your post! I like those mittens, but it's a sore point for me. Two christmas's ago i was given toast mittens. They were beautiful. I wore them once. Then i was trying on a winter coat that i initially thought I'd keepbut in the end i decided to return... I'll never really understand why i put them in the pocket and how i could have not noticed. After the inauguration the independent shop that made Bernie's gloves was inundated with orders. I was on the wait list for a time.

AmethystMoonShine · 08/10/2022 06:38

@dudsville oh that’s sad 😞 especially as they were new and a present.
It had never occurred to me how Toast-like his mittens were! Did you ever get a pair like his? It’s great to think an independent business benefitted from his photo going viral 😁

AmethystMoonShine · 08/10/2022 06:45

Thanks for the cashmere tip @faustina. I’ve just looked at the JL men’s cashmere and can see that would work. I will be stalking those in the sales this year!
I’ve got quite a few cashmere jumpers, quite neat fitting by Brora that I picked up on eBay about five years ago for about £30 each all unworn, so that’d work well.
I concur on the fair isle being warm, mine got a lot of wear last year and I picked up another in the Toast summer sale this year.
I love a properly cold winter with snow but with the price of oil and log’s so high at the moment, maybe I’ll hope for a mild one 🤞🏼

dudsville · 08/10/2022 08:16

I took myself off the waiting list after a little while. In the end i decided that although i love the mittens, was so gutted at losing mine, and although it would be funny to have some by the maker of Bernie's, that I thought they were more style over function for me and bought some cosier but not as pretty/retro ones from cos. I might cave and try again this year!

Speaking of retro, how far is too far. Yesterday i wore toast burnt/rusty orangey cord trousers with the rusty striped emma top. I liked the combo very much, but thought i probably wouldn't brave it outside. Is that a step too far?

Stoic123 · 08/10/2022 08:27

@dudsville - not a step too far. Sounds fab.

dudsville · 08/10/2022 10:55

I may try it out and see if anyone mistakes me for a member of scooby's gang.

faustina · 08/10/2022 12:54

Sounds really lovely @dudsville - take a pic if you can!

Stoic123 · 08/10/2022 14:00

Has anyone on here had issues with inconsistent sizing on exactly the same item of clothing with Toast?

I've been wearing the flat fronted denim trousers frequently so ordered another pair in exactly same size. The 2nd pair is tighter and about an inch shorter so going back (tighter could just be size label problem but was surprised by such length difference).

Very annoying but has made me reconsider logic of having 2 pairs - so will at least save myself some money.

Gonegrey31 · 08/10/2022 14:25

Yes I bought two pairs of cotton Gabis in the same size but different colours in September. One pair perfect fit , the other much smaller, I checked the label expecting the wrong size but no. I then measured both garments and there were significant differences.

Laska2Meryls · 08/10/2022 17:44

My jute gabis are much smaller than the loden ones both 10s but jute tighter around the calf... I dont mind too much as I will wear them with boots but its annoying....

OP posts:
Theteapotsbrokenspout · 08/10/2022 19:18

Bought a pair of cord gabis on Vinted but the elastic in the waistband appears to have folded over in places. Is this a common problem with these? My cotton gabis don’t do it.

I can get it in the right place but then it starts to roll and fold again, I was wondering whether it will stay flat if I steam it on the wrong side. Rather annoying as they are in good condition apart from this.

dudsville · 08/10/2022 21:03

I've tried emma tees in the same size and found the orange one too small. The denim skirt that a few of us bought here, i first tried a 12, i could get it on but it sat high and so tight that i thought a 14 wouldn't do, so then tried a 16, that was very loose, and i don't have anything if toast in that size so that made sense, i then tried a14 but didn't like the look. When the sale came i bought the 12 again and its perfect and doesn't sit high and tight like the first one, which is fortunate as it was the sale version, but that's crazy.

Anyway, here's my scooby doo outfit, toned down with an overshirt.

Toasties : Leafy walks and Winter woollies .. Autumn arrives!
dudsville · 08/10/2022 21:04

And i did wear it out but with black arizonas and an anthracite cropped arket cardigan.

faustina · 08/10/2022 21:14

That looks lovely and unusual (in a good way). Is the overshirt Toast too?

dudsville · 08/10/2022 21:19

Thanks @faustina ! The overshirt is uniqlo. I have two, they're thick cotton, one grey and one brown. They're aging quickly for being only 2 years old, but they're so useful and get a lot of wear and were cheap.
