Winter mini skirts - age limit?

And when I say mini, I don't mean just covering your bum mini, just short I guess.

So I've recently given my wardrobe a bit of an overhaul and am quite enjoying throwing out and buying in. I'm really starting to understand my shape more and I'm going out my comfort zone a bit and (sometimes) being pleasantly surprised by what suits me.

I'm a size 10 inverted triangle, which I would argue is one of the hardest shapes to dress. I've always liked my legs, so I used to wear mini skirts with thick tights quite a lot this time of year, but at 38 I'm not sure if it looks right on me anymore.

I know I'm not old, but I remember a couple years a go wearing a denim mini (ish) about to go out and my mum said, with raised eyebrows "that's very short" and I just realised today that I haven't worn them since! I remember asking what she meant and if she was saying it was too short for my age and she just said "Well....."

Can't believe I've been that influenced by one comment from my mum! But it obviously made me feel a bit rubbish and self conscious.

Anyway, got my eye on several lovely winter, suede, leather and denim short skirts, but I'm still reluctant to buy. I don't want to live in jeans all autumn/winter!

So if your in your late 30's plus, do you still wear minis?

TIA

This will shock you, I'm 42 and wear miniskirts and plan to indefinitely 😱

BarnetTroubles · 03/10/2022 14:25

@RealDeeBliss 😲😲🤯

Haha well to clarify, I know there isn't an age limit and I HATE the 'mutton dressed as lamb' saying 😠 but that's exactly what my mum made me feel like.

I’m late 50’s and still wear short skirts with plaque black tights and boots in winter / in answer to your question how about 95 yrs ( with apologies to anyone older )

ThatCheeseIsMine · 03/10/2022 14:28

I agree there isn't an age limit, and you should wear what you like and what makes you feel god, but I know what you mean as my mum is similar. So I grew up thinking that at around 40 you just had to turn into a little old lady with a grey perm and mushroom-coloured slacks.

However, at university I went to a lecture by Germaine Greer and to my astonishment she (at 50+) was wearing a miniskirt. If it's good enough for GG - has been my mantra ever since!

ThatCheeseIsMine · 03/10/2022 14:30

feel good not god!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 03/10/2022 14:30

If you've got the legs you're never too old for a mini with opaques (maybe not a micro)

LetsGoDoDoDo · 03/10/2022 14:30

I'm 40 and plan to spend this Autumn/Winter wearing short skirts, jumpers tights and boots. It's one of my favourite looks!

Go for it!

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 03/10/2022 14:31

No age is too old for mini.

AuntieStella · 03/10/2022 14:32

There are no age limits, only ageist stereotypes.

And ageist "mutton" insults (just say someone looks bad, if that's what you think, rather than ascribing it to age)

Chech your mirror, not the number of candles on the cake

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 03/10/2022 14:35

41 and still wear mini-skirts. I think particularly in winter when you have tights or leggings underneath then there's no limit.
The only items I've relegated from my wardrobe are low cut tops because of my creased decolletage.

Links to the skirts you're eying up please!

Brieeeeeeeee · 03/10/2022 14:36

Yep, if it suits you keep wearing. I am the same age and have strong sturdy legs (I lift weights) Minis are fine, knee length pencil or skater styles are fine, anything below that makes me look like a Victorian charwoman. I’ll be wearing knee length and higher for the rest of my life.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 03/10/2022 14:37

I tend to do the opposite of what my mum approves of as her taste is utterly abhorrent to me so it's actually a thumbs up if she hates what I'm wearing.

Yes I should grow up.

ScottishBeth · 03/10/2022 14:40

I'm 38 and would happily wear mini skirts. And please can you send some links! I would love a suede or leather skirt!

NotMeNoNo · 03/10/2022 14:41

I think it depends on the person and her style/proportions. I know women in their 70s who wear short skirts really well. Often if you are petite it's a better look.

BamBamBilla · 03/10/2022 14:42

All of my skirts are mini. Its the only length that looks good on me. I wear them all the time in the winter along with shorts too. I find it much warmer to wear with tights than trousers in the winter. Tweed, denim, corduroy, wool I love them all. I'm nearly 40 but I'll never stop wearing them.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/10/2022 14:42

You should wear them whatever age you feel comfortable in.

My nana (sadly now deceased), was a size 6-8 and under 5ft and would regularly wear knee or above knee skirts with sheer tights (for special occasions) but would get envious looks from other women her age (80s).

MuddlerInLaw · 03/10/2022 14:42

Age limit?

Horizontal in coffin is probably, definitively, the last opportunity …

DreamingOfSoftWhiteSand · 03/10/2022 14:42

In my books miniskirts are a hard no if it's too cold. If not, I love wearing them and will do so until I choose not to.

Imissmoominmama · 03/10/2022 14:43

I’m 56 and wear short tunic dresses in summer, and short skirts in winter (with tights and boots). It has never occurred to me that there was an age limit.

MirandaWest · 03/10/2022 14:45

How short is short? I'm 47 and my skirts are either above my knees or down to the ground.

Bugeyedowl · 03/10/2022 14:45

51 and I still wear mini skirts, tights and boots. I do feel self-conscious these days when bare-legged so I prefer long skirts in summer, but it's OK in winter.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 03/10/2022 14:50

A black jersey mini skirt with thick tights and a sweater is my go to non-jeans outfit and I’m 42 with no plans of giving this up! But I do find I need some solid boots to make my short legs look better.

LoobyDop · 03/10/2022 14:54

I can’t get my head around being too old to wear short skirts, but not too old to care what your mum thinks about what you wear.

ChocChipOwl · 03/10/2022 14:58

Well you should wear what you want of course. Everyone should.

But I notice when an older woman is wearing a mini skirt. And there's just something about it that doesn't look quite right. To my mind anyway. (And as someone who's knocking on a bit I feel qualified to say this Grin)

So yep - wear what you fancy as all women should. But in my opinion it starts looking wrong from 40 odd (and to reiterate that isn't a fact - that's my own opinion)

SunnieShine · 03/10/2022 14:59

I remember my Mum wearing a winter mini skirt (not incredibly short) at 50 - and she looked bloody fantastic in it.
