Winter mini skirts - age limit?

And when I say mini, I don't mean just covering your bum mini, just short I guess.

So I've recently given my wardrobe a bit of an overhaul and am quite enjoying throwing out and buying in. I'm really starting to understand my shape more and I'm going out my comfort zone a bit and (sometimes) being pleasantly surprised by what suits me.

I'm a size 10 inverted triangle, which I would argue is one of the hardest shapes to dress. I've always liked my legs, so I used to wear mini skirts with thick tights quite a lot this time of year, but at 38 I'm not sure if it looks right on me anymore.

I know I'm not old, but I remember a couple years a go wearing a denim mini (ish) about to go out and my mum said, with raised eyebrows "that's very short" and I just realised today that I haven't worn them since! I remember asking what she meant and if she was saying it was too short for my age and she just said "Well....."

Can't believe I've been that influenced by one comment from my mum! But it obviously made me feel a bit rubbish and self conscious.

Anyway, got my eye on several lovely winter, suede, leather and denim short skirts, but I'm still reluctant to buy. I don't want to live in jeans all autumn/winter!

So if your in your late 30's plus, do you still wear minis?

no limit with opaques

Just to say...no age limit on style! It's one of my favourite looks, black opaques, chunky shoes or ankle boots with a skirt length that's just a few inches above the knee. Largely an a line type shape, not really tight for me. In fact I've just started a thread as I'm after nipped in shift dresses with skirts like this but can't find any, nice skirt offerings would be welcome too!

63 and still wear short skirts but only with thick tights or leggings and boots and I am a 5'3" size 18.

What did Dorothy Parker say? Something about, if your form is good form?

If it's a look that suits you, carry on. I'm 66 and don't plan to stop wearing shorter skirts any time soon.

Even if we make preserving our figure a full time job, our legs tend not to grow more shapely with age. That's biology / gravity for you. At some point - and you might be 38, 58 or 78 when it happens - you are likely to look in the mirror at your short skirt and think, 'Hmm, this doesn't look as good at it used to look.'

That's not the crunch moment though. Because really, who cares? Your mum perhaps or some posters on Mumsnet but, as long as you don't care, so what?

No, for me the crunch time is when and if you look in the mirror and think, 'You know what, I'm not enjoying this any more.' Again you might be 38 or 78 or it may never even happen, but if and when it does then that, I would argue, is when it's time. Because this business is supposed to be fun.

For what it's worth, I think I was in my early/mid 50s. It's been fine - there are lots of other clothes that excite me far more than mini skirts and really the only time I ever think about them is when I see threads like this.

Can I point out @BarnetTroubles - that you are several years younger than Kim Kardashian?

I don’t believe there is an age you should stop wearing a mini skirt (there might be a point when it no longer flatters your figure, but that’s a personal not set age thing), but if there was, at not even 40 yet you have not hit it by a long way.

48 size 8-10 with good legs. Mini skirts and dresses are a staple for me. I'm sick of jeans so will be 2 wearing pretty much minis with thick tights and boots all winter.

I'm 41 and apple shaped. My legs are definitely my best feature and There is no way I'm going to hide them away! Mini skirts all the way.

Oh and I also wear low necked tops because I paid a lot of money for a tattoo on my chest and I want to show it off!

I wear them a couple of inches above the knee, with thick tights and boots in the winter I'm 62, I'm also petite 5ft2 so knee length looks wrong on me, the only other length I wear is midi, on me it's more maxi.

Honestly I think there's a difference between wearing a short denim skirt in summer and wearing a short skirt with tights and boots in winter. The latter is much easier to make look chic, so I say go for it

I was delighted for October to come as now I don't need to think about what to wear to work each day that I'm in the office. I'll be rotating 5 mini dresses with tights, every day from now until April. One of the few good things about winter! I'm 40.

MIL is 68 and wears miniskirts with tights and boots and looks fantastic.

38 here and I plan to wear short ish skirts but would only wear them now with thick black tights, I say if you feel comfortable then go for it op xx

I'm 39 and still wear mini skirts with black tights and ankle boots, I have some lovely skirts for autumn and think I will be wearing them for a long time. Wear what you want op.

I'm 46 and wear short skirts in summer and winter. Not so much to work but I do wear shortish skirts with opaque tights to work sometimes in the winter. Shortish A-line skirt and a polo neck and chunky Chelsea boots.

No. nor with no tights (although that might be chilly).

It’s more that any possible objections seem particularly silly when we’re talking about legs clad in thick, black tights.

What is an inverted triangle? Is it massive shoulders, no bum and thin legs?
