Winter mini skirts - age limit?

And when I say mini, I don't mean just covering your bum mini, just short I guess.

So I've recently given my wardrobe a bit of an overhaul and am quite enjoying throwing out and buying in. I'm really starting to understand my shape more and I'm going out my comfort zone a bit and (sometimes) being pleasantly surprised by what suits me.

I'm a size 10 inverted triangle, which I would argue is one of the hardest shapes to dress. I've always liked my legs, so I used to wear mini skirts with thick tights quite a lot this time of year, but at 38 I'm not sure if it looks right on me anymore.

I know I'm not old, but I remember a couple years a go wearing a denim mini (ish) about to go out and my mum said, with raised eyebrows "that's very short" and I just realised today that I haven't worn them since! I remember asking what she meant and if she was saying it was too short for my age and she just said "Well....."

Can't believe I've been that influenced by one comment from my mum! But it obviously made me feel a bit rubbish and self conscious.

Anyway, got my eye on several lovely winter, suede, leather and denim short skirts, but I'm still reluctant to buy. I don't want to live in jeans all autumn/winter!

So if your in your late 30's plus, do you still wear minis?

TIA

I’m 56 and wear short tunic dresses in summer, and short skirts in winter (with tights and boots). It has never occurred to me that there was an age limit.

Me too - 56 and my staple alternative to jeans and jumpers, is short skirts with thick tights. Short as in somewhere between mid thigh and knees, but not just over the knee or just below the bum, really mid-short. I have three favourites all from Boden, bought 10/15 years ago, still going strong, a blue denim, a brown cord, and a green velvet.

ChimChimeny · 03/10/2022 15:02

I'm 42 & every winter I bring out my black pleather short skirt to wear with 100 denier black tights. & flat shoes.
Love my legs in thick black tights 🤣

CombatBarbie · 03/10/2022 15:03

42 and had a cord pink one with black tights, my DMs and a white jumper last week.

VatofTea · 03/10/2022 15:03

43, wearing a short black skirt today, and black tights.

BamBamBilla · 03/10/2022 15:05

@ChocChipOwl How do you know how old they are?

Pugsbladder · 03/10/2022 15:07

It's my favourite look. Just slightly above the knee, black tights, ankle boots or clumpy shoes. Turtle neck, waistcoat, sixties type pendant. I love any plaids, tartans, checks also knee length pinafores. Don't care what anyone else thinks. People wearing flesh coloured leggings don't care so why should I?

SudocremOnEverything · 03/10/2022 15:09

Surely winter, with nice thick tights, is the perfect time for miniskirts.

I’d have assumed more judgement was applied to women daring to expose a bit of thigh in the summer. It is hard to get too worked up about the length of a skirt when there are thick tights involved. I’m sure some people manage it. But those people will get worked up no matter what women do.

Aggypanthus · 03/10/2022 15:09

I am over sixty and wear thick black tights and mini skirts from time to time. My legs are decent though.. some women's legs get scrawny at the top as they get older gue to lack of exercise - muscle wastage which looks very unattractive in a shirt skirt or even in leggings for that matter.
If you look OK then why not?

LaurieFairyCake · 03/10/2022 15:10

Never too old

ChocChipOwl · 03/10/2022 15:17

@BamBamBilla well...: I've got eyes?

And like I was at pains to say - twice - this is my personal opinion.

Cam22 · 03/10/2022 15:23

Anyone brave enough to post a photo as evidence of suitability?!

BamBamBilla · 03/10/2022 15:25

@ChocChipOwl But you don't actually know, you're just guessing a person's age and applying an arbitrary rule because of that. Rather than using your eyes and forming an opinion if they look good you're using your eyes to guess their age and using that to form an opinion if they look good.

ChocChipOwl · 03/10/2022 15:28

@BamBamBilla no I'm not. Have I hit a nerve or something? Grin

Time to bust out the rules:

What Women Over 30 Should Wear

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 03/10/2022 15:35

I’m almost 43 and wear mini skirts or tweed shorts over opaques with boots every winter. LOVE that look. I’m 5’9 and size 6-8. I’ll wear whatever TF I want for as long as I want.

Shiboleth1 · 03/10/2022 15:37

I'm 42, 5'5 with great legs. Every winter I bust out my opaques and mini skirts. I don't give a fig what anyone thinks of me. Lots of internalised misogyny going on with people who police what other women wear.

torquewench · 03/10/2022 15:38

I'm 51. Currently in a miniskirt and Doc Martens.
I have great legs 😊

crosbystillsandmash · 03/10/2022 15:40

I'm 51, my skirts are always just under my bum. Always with 100 denier tights and ankle boots.

Op please stop this now. Wear whatever makes you feel good, stop worrying about 'rules' that are outdated and designed to keep women down!! 👊

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/10/2022 15:41

I think a nice mini (thicker fabric and lined) worn with plain opaque tights, boots and a plain top always looks good regardless of age.

Also a well fitted short dress again with good opaque or wooly tights and boots is even better

XingMing · 03/10/2022 15:41

My legs are toned from walking and I wear a jersey tube mini over black leggings as an outfit for dog-walking followed by Pilates and supermarket most Mondays. I am 66.

Chech your mirror, not the number of candles on the cake

Thank you I ❤️ this!

BluebellsareBlue · 03/10/2022 15:46

47 and it's my winter staples, nice short skirts, tights and boots

Fozzleyplum · 03/10/2022 15:48

One way to look at it is, if you were ok wearing skinny jeans, then a mini skirt with properly opaque tights is arguably less revealing/ "daring".

trilobiterevival · 03/10/2022 15:52

Well I would usually avoid anything with 'age limit' in the title, but I will presume, kindly, that you are feeling insecure, and no fear, we all find ourselves there on occasion!

I will tell you about the day this concept fell apart for me. We usually associate short skirts on older ladies with clinging on to youth. This is something of a dated perception nowadays, as a piece of fabric is and how one wears it is entirely dependent upon HOW it is worn.

I saw an older woman on a train to London a few years ago. She was possibly in her mid 60's. Or older. She had neat shortish hair and good skin, slim and healthy looking, but most definitely looking her age. She looked extremely comfortable and at home in herself, and I couldn't help noticing her. She wore a short mini in thick corduroy with some gorgeous cashmere looking tights, dark brown chelsea boots and a slouchy, gorgeous knit jumper. She just looked perfect really, natural, not sexualised or out of place.

And this made me think that it is who we are that determines how we wear our clothes, and the closer to comfort and self satisfaction we get, the better we look, regardless of weight, age or other so called limitations. All of our preconceptions are 'man made', basically made up, changeable and constantly in flux. It is meaningless to question it, outside of societies trends and norms.

I am 48 and look better in very short skirts than knee length. I don't wear them often, but when I do, my legs are decent and I style it for me. The only rule I have is that it shouldn't be short enough to make me uncomfortable sitting down on a train! But I would apply that rule as a teenager.

The dated old image of a middle aged desperado is something I only ever come across on MN. It's like so many people here are a bit out of the loop, terrified of their own shadow. Backbone ladies! Grow some!

Bearsporridge · 03/10/2022 15:58

I’m having the same dilemma - feel they would fill a gap in my wardrobe, but not sure if I’m pushing it.

But in the last week I saw a woman my age wearing clothes that struck me as very 90s, - miniskirt included- and my first reaction was that I’d like to get to know her. And I saw one of older neighbours dressed in a way that looked very 1980s, and absolutely rocking it.

I don’t know what it is I’m trying to say exactly - but they both looked more age appropriate than teens and twenty somethings in those styles to my agèd eye! They looked like women who felt like themselves in their clothes.

I do think that this dilemma might belong to our mum’s generation rather than ours. Mine is still uncomfortable with my shoulder length hair.
