M&S a shop for very tall people now!

Bloody hell- I was in a store today and it felt like an alternative universe where M&S think their customers are all thin and super tall but in reality the majority of customers are average or short and more likely to not be skinny as they are a bit older.

I used to be a regular or long in trousers, but they are cut for giants now. What on earth has happened to the sizing? Who is going to buy all this stock!? How can a shop not design clothes for its actual customers.

Next sell a lot of petite clothes.

PAFMO · 02/10/2022 10:54

I buy Long from M&S and DD buys Petite or Short.
It's the only place we both trust to find the correct length.

This is clearly nonsense too - for couples that are close together in height, the estimated height of a girl child ends up being a fair bit shorter than both parents!

It only maybe works for couples where the parents have a certain differential between their heights.

Just worked out ds and it was spot on.

Well honestly if people can’t see this for what it is a very thinly veiled attempt to tap into the 6 foot four built like a brick shit house market for floral dresses that appears to have flourished over the last two years then I give up on you all.

I'm sure that's what it is.

Chewbecca · 02/10/2022 11:15

I’m really peed off about this. M&S short have always been my go to jeans & sometimes trousers. Bought some last week which are 4” longer than they were before. Surprise surprise there are no extra short available. No more M&S jeans for me.

woodhill · 02/10/2022 11:18

I usually buy the regular but looks like I will need the short but they all look ridiculously long now

My inside leg is about 29"

RaininginDarling · 02/10/2022 11:23

I find their sizing erratic. I have items from M&S in: 10, 12, 14, 16. They all fit. I assume it's because they source different ranges from different countries/factories. I wish there was some sizing consistency at least in their own shops.

The trousers seem far too long for regular fit these days. Even if people are getting taller, that would, I assume, be at an evolutionary pace* **? I don't believe at the population level (who-shop-at-M&S), heights have gone up by about three inches in the last five years.

*Not an evolutionary biologist.

**I await The Dark Horse episode covering this subject...

quantumbutterfly · 02/10/2022 11:27

Their regular length trousers are fine on me but their dresses are too long.

Perhaps you're right about all those hairy handed truckers spending their down time in florals.

Just worked out ds and it was spot on.

And I worked it ourt for my family and it was wrong for everyone. So?

Look at the formula - it assumes a certain height differential between the two parents (hence the inclusion of the 13cm).

It is insane. I am short and the short trousers are miles long now. Think they will loose alot of customers now.

thenightsky · 02/10/2022 11:42

This is fabulous news for me - 5ft 9in tall with an inside leg of 36in. Jeans have always been a problem, which has got worse since the demise of Long Tall Sally. I tried some jeans on last month in an outlet M&S and they were flapping round my ankles. I guess they were old stock then.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 02/10/2022 11:46

M&S sizes are all over the place. My size in there is anything from 14 short to 18 long. I usually have to try several sizes in whatever I want to find which fits the best.

It's a shame because (little house on the prairie dresses aside) they seem to be (finally) moving in the right direction with their clothes.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2022 11:48

Long Tall Sally is still online.
I guess they'll lose the customers who are too short for short, but gain the customers for whom long used to be too short... Just shifting the curve across a bit? I'm slightly bemused by the assumption that a Marks and Spencer's shopper would tend to be shorter than average?

thenightsky · 02/10/2022 11:55

It's not the long tall sally of old though. The name has been bought by Very and what I've sent for has all had to go back due to extreme poor quality.

Solosunrise · 02/10/2022 11:59

I used to always get my jeans from their per una range. Short size 12 fitted nicely. Now nothing at all fits. I tried to get a fitted jacket for a funeral last week too, and every one I tried came nearly halfway down my thigh.
I ended up in H&M for a hip lenth jacket. Got one, but the quality was not good.
Don't know where I will get jeans now. I'm useless at sewing so I'm going to have to find someone to make adjustments.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2022 11:59

Ah. That's a shame. I hadn't bought anything from there for years. I used to buy topshop jeans, but not loving the ASOS switch. Have just ordered some from M&S!

Porridgeislife · 02/10/2022 12:00

M&S have definitely gotten longer in leg (long is too long & I’m a 33” inside leg) length but their sleeves are still way too short! It’s like they think their customers are all T-Rex shaped.

muchprefersummer · 02/10/2022 12:01

This is good news for me as they've never been long enough for me - I shall try them again now.

SherwoodForest · 02/10/2022 12:01

I am bemused by this thread. I am short and usually buy regular M&S trousers. I've just bought some regular length jeans and they are a perfect fit. I bought chinos in the summer and bought long length.
Other shops are much longer in the leg but M&S is rare in offering several leg lengths. Surely with five different lengths available all but the shortest and tallest women will find something to fit?

I'm just a bit disappointed because as a short person, I could rely on marks for the things that fit. It would be ideal if they could have increased their range to include longer lenths without stopping doing the shorter ones.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2022 12:03

I make a lot of clothes myself because of the lack of well fitting clothes for tall women. That way I can adjust the bodice, sleeves etc, as well as just the length.

woodhill · 02/10/2022 12:04

The wide legged trousers all look so long and they don't seem to make different lengths

woodhill · 02/10/2022 12:04

I mean in every style of trousers

Solosunrise · 02/10/2022 12:11

@TheFallenMadonna it's tough whatever size and shape you are, I think. I am not overweight but have broader shoulders than hips, and quite big boobs, and it's really hard to get clothes off the peg. I am in awe of anyone who can make their own clothes so I take my hat off to you!
