M&S a shop for very tall people now!

Bloody hell- I was in a store today and it felt like an alternative universe where M&S think their customers are all thin and super tall but in reality the majority of customers are average or short and more likely to not be skinny as they are a bit older.

I used to be a regular or long in trousers, but they are cut for giants now. What on earth has happened to the sizing? Who is going to buy all this stock!? How can a shop not design clothes for its actual customers.

Weird as the school uniform seems to have gone in the opposite direction. Just had to buy size 13-14yo school trousers for 10yo DD!

PickAChew · 01/10/2022 23:01

This is annoying, if it's true. Last bought jeans there a year ago. Regular length, despite being 5'4 with short legs. I have some short length but they're a little too short in the rise for me.

I bought a perfect fit t-shirt in the sale. Perfect for someone with broad shoulders and no boobs, maybe.

I bought a pair of their petite jeans in the sale. I had to cut 4 inches off (I measured) and they were still too long. Also their ankles (skinny jeans) are weirdly big.

Yes I just bought some skinny jeans, exact same code on them as a pair I bought last year but the ankles on the new ones are really baggy and I need to turn them up as they’re longer

I recommend trying again. They fit up to a 36 inch inside leg now. It’s amazing!

Really? My DH is 6’3” and wears 33” trouser length. How tall are these women?!

Perhaps to accommodate the trans customers

This!

Rachaelrachael · 01/10/2022 23:07

I'm so excited to read this! Been struggling to find anywhere on the high street that sells tall jeans since topshop closed down 😃

Caroffee · 01/10/2022 23:08

NiceTwin · 01/10/2022 21:50

Yes!
I used to be regular length but am now short and I haven't shrunk yet.

Same.

I'm glad to have spread a bit of tall happiness.

Hmm or perhaps women who are seen as freakish by some and have had to deal for years with not being able to find clothes that are long enough.

Do you have half a clue what it's like being 6'2", as a woman (the 'adult human female ' kind), being taller than 99.98% of the female population.

It's brilliant that a mainstream clothes retailer have finally introduced off the peg clothes that have an outside chance of not making me look ridiculous.

Karamna · 01/10/2022 23:21

Average height for a UK woman is 5'4. Great if they want to do a longer length for tall women but it seems very bad business sense if the majority of the female population are going to find the shortest length too long! Crazy.

fernz · 02/10/2022 06:44

I've noticed this with their skirts. Anything described as a midi and in the photos coming to just below the knee on their models is sure to be ankle length on 5ft3 me...

Sestriere · 02/10/2022 06:55

I think the point is, not that they have started catering to tall women, that’s great, but they have stopped catering to short ones.

Google suggests the average height for a woman from the uk is five foot three. At 5ft 4.5 I always considered myself average. I’m now officially short in M&S and my 5ft 2 daughter can’t buy work trousers there any more.

QuebecBagnet · 02/10/2022 07:00

I’m 5ft2” and their short length are now way too long for me despite being the right length for years.

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/10/2022 07:04

Wow! This sounds very promising (I'm tall). I gave up on them years ago due to everything g being too short. I'll take another look.

AgnesNaismith · 02/10/2022 07:09

Calling tall people giants and equating them to trans people is so rude.

Whycantibetangy · 02/10/2022 07:11

5’3” Welcome to my world 😭

SierraSapphire · 02/10/2022 07:16

I'm 5'7 and I tried on about six pairs of trousers a couple of days ago, all regular, and the lengths were erratic, some right and some way too long by about 3 inches I'd say. I did buy one pair, there was another pair I really liked, but I couldn't be bothered to go back and search for a short and then try them on again, so they lost a sale. I thought it was odd too and wondered whether they expect women to wear high heels (I don't).

ArcticSkewer · 02/10/2022 07:17

Octomore · 01/10/2022 22:16

Your GP is talking absolute nonsense! It certainly isn't the norm for either male or female children to end up halfway between their parents height. If they were, we would be gradually getting more homogenous in height, gravitating towards the mean. Which we're not!

Stats show the average man and average woman are getting taller. Just look around you at the height of the average young person these days!

There's a formula for estimating height based on parents height. It's a bit more complicated than the GP explained.

Add mother's and father's height together.
For a boy, add 13 cm.
For a girl, deduct 13cm
Now divide the number in two. That's the estimated height

DanglingMod · 02/10/2022 07:18

Yes, women are getting taller, but M&S sizing is utterly ridiculous. I'm just over 5'7, used to be a long in most shops as a teen (31/32 inch long Levis, for reference). Marks changed their sizing years ago and I've been a regular there for decades until about 6 years ago when I became a short.

I'm still towards the taller end of most people I know who would shop in M&S but I'm a short?? Where do actual average or short people now buy trousers?

If you are 6ft or taller, you've been missing out for years. You definitely could have been shopping there for years, for as long as a 5'7 person (me) has been classed as short length.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/10/2022 07:20

My husband is 6'1" and I'm 5'11". My legs are longer than his as I carry my height in my legs. I'm about a 35" inside leg.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/10/2022 07:21

Damn, the quote failed. That was to @EntertainingandFactual.

Spudlet · 02/10/2022 07:23

Consider this 5’10 woman happy… I grew up only ever being able to buy jeans that fitted because those were the only trousers most shops did in a choice of leg lengths, so this sounds amazing. I already buy my work bottoms from M&S because they’re long enough - I will be checking them out later this month when I have a big shopping trip planned!

Changechangychange · 02/10/2022 07:29

Leakingroofagain · 01/10/2022 22:00

Is that true? Because my DS is on the shorter side and the GP told me that most children end up being about half way between mum and dads height. Which confused me because if he married someone slightly shorter then in a few generations my future relatives will all be finishing up 1ft tall 😂----

Centiles, not actual heights. So if you have two 10th centile parents you probably won’t be 99th centile yourself.

LiftyLift · 02/10/2022 07:30

I bought some leggings in the sale this week from M&S this week to lounge in around the house. They only had regular length which should have been fine but they were ridiculously long and gathered around the ankles. They went straight back.

Undertheoldlindentree · 02/10/2022 07:31

Catering to different body types is not just about leg length. I'm only 5' 7" and have never felt comfortable in M&S shirts and tops - just too short in the body.

But yes OP, in my 20's I used to be a Regular length in M&S and Next trousers. Now I've reached my 50's, I find I'm a Short!
