Bloody hell- I was in a store today and it felt like an alternative universe where M&S think their customers are all thin and super tall but in reality the majority of customers are average or short and more likely to not be skinny as they are a bit older.
I used to be a regular or long in trousers, but they are cut for giants now. What on earth has happened to the sizing? Who is going to buy all this stock!? How can a shop not design clothes for its actual customers.

There's a formula for estimating height based on parents height. It's a bit more complicated than the GP explained.
Add mother's and father's height together.
For a boy, add 13 cm.
For a girl, deduct 13cm
Now divide the number in two. That's the estimated height

Your GP is talking absolute nonsense! It certainly isn't the norm for either male or female children to end up halfway between their parents height. If they were, we would be gradually getting more homogenous in height, gravitating towards the mean. Which we're not!
Stats show the average man and average woman are getting taller. Just look around you at the height of the average young person these days!
Leakingroofagain · 01/10/2022 22:00
Is that true? Because my DS is on the shorter side and the GP told me that most children end up being about half way between mum and dads height. Which confused me because if he married someone slightly shorter then in a few generations my future relatives will all be finishing up 1ft tall 😂----

The height of the average UK woman is steadily increasing. So yes, someone who was a regular leg length in 2010 may well be a short leg length now.
When I was younger, I was unusually tall for a woman. Now I'm still tall, but not as unusually so.
It's like vanity sizing - as average weights go up, the dimensions of a size 10 are going up.
AuntieMarys · 02/10/2022 07:44
entertainingandfactual I'm 6 feet with 35 inch inside leg. Some women are taller than 6 feet, shock, horror.

I'd heard before that if a woman had a child with a man who is 6" taller, the child will be her height. If he's 8" taller the child will be 2" taller, if he's 2" taller, the child will be 4" shorter than the mum. So it all stems off this 6", which is about 13cm.
Back to m&s, I am nearly 5' 3" and the short are now far too long. In past years, short may have been okay, may have been too short.

And some women just have very long legs, even if they're under 6"!

I'm 5ft 11 and now wear their regular length trousers! I ordered a few pairs of long trousers in the summer and had to send them all back.
EntertainingandFactual · 02/10/2022 07:56
This is what I hadn’t thought of.
My Mum is staying with me at the moment and we’ve just stood next to each other to measure legs! We are both the same height and hers are a good 2in longer than mine!
😄 I honestly never thought about it before!

People are getting taller so it’s inevitable really , not sure why you say they’re for thin people only as it’s one of the few retailers that stock pretty much their whole range in larger sizes rather than a smaller plus size range
EntertainingandFactual · 02/10/2022 07:52
@AuntieMarys I’m not stupid.
I was replying to someone else about leg length. Shorter people having longer leg measurements than taller people.
Thanks for your input though 🤨
