M&S a shop for very tall people now!

Bloody hell- I was in a store today and it felt like an alternative universe where M&S think their customers are all thin and super tall but in reality the majority of customers are average or short and more likely to not be skinny as they are a bit older.

I used to be a regular or long in trousers, but they are cut for giants now. What on earth has happened to the sizing? Who is going to buy all this stock!? How can a shop not design clothes for its actual customers.

I'm happy with it. I'm 5ft7 but longish legged and I'm usually too long for regular/not long enough for tall. Now regular fits perfectly.

There's a formula for estimating height based on parents height. It's a bit more complicated than the GP explained.

Add mother's and father's height together.
For a boy, add 13 cm.
For a girl, deduct 13cm
Now divide the number in two. That's the estimated height

I'd heard before that if a woman had a child with a man who is 6" taller, the child will be her height. If he's 8" taller the child will be 2" taller, if he's 2" taller, the child will be 4" shorter than the mum. So it all stems off this 6", which is about 13cm.

Back to m&s, I am nearly 5' 3" and the short are now far too long. In past years, short may have been okay, may have been too short.

Are men's trousers longer as well?

DH is 6'2" and needs a 35" leg, but M and S always stopped at 34".

My beef with M and S is that the arms of their supersoft jumpers are now shorter. I have one that I bought a few years ago and when I wanted another one in green I found that the arms were too short. I wear jumpers in colder weather and need my wrists covered.

I’m my 20s, I was a long. Now in my 50s, I have no idea. But suspect I could even be a short if these posts are anything to go by and I’m above the average height for a woman (5ft 4 or 164.3).

@AuntieMarys I’m not stupid.

I was replying to someone else about leg length. Shorter people having longer leg measurements than taller people.

Thanks for your input though 🤨

I think the point is, not that they have started catering to tall women, that’s great, but they have stopped catering to short ones.

This perfectly illustrates the problem. Obviously the sizes they used to stock have meant that some women who are taller couldn't get trousers to fit but their approach shouldn't then be to remove these items and replace them with longer sizes, it should be to add the extra sizes alongside the current ones.

As much as M&S would like to cater for today's super tall teens, that's not where these kids are going to be shopping. To remove the shorter sizes just means they lose many of those who were already shopping there instead of adding a few extra sizes alongside existing stock. Which would have kept those of us who are short happy and also made the day of those who have been blessed with height. A win win for all.

This is what I hadn’t thought of.
My Mum is staying with me at the moment and we’ve just stood next to each other to measure legs! We are both the same height and hers are a good 2in longer than mine!
😄 I honestly never thought about it before!

I'm 5ft 11 and now wear their regular length trousers! I ordered a few pairs of long trousers in the summer and had to send them all back.

This is great news, I'm off to have a look as I'm the same height!

I went to look at trousers there yesterday and they were all enormously long. I'm 5ft 3

People are getting taller so it’s inevitable really , not sure why you say they’re for thin people only as it’s one of the few retailers that stock pretty much their whole range in larger sizes rather than a smaller plus size range

People have got markedly taller in the last 2-3 years???

I think you’ll find adults who fitted in their clothes “back then” are still adults who need clothes now and I dont remember a growth spurt being a covid side effect

as someone who is barely touching 5’ 3” I kind of wish it had been though.

As a short person with a longer body to ratio, no they don’t.

M&S sizes are huge....I bought a dress in size 6.. whereas anywhere else I would be an 8 or even a 10 in some designer clothes

Back to trousers…

I’ve just looked at the size guides for M&S and next and it looks like they’ve just re-named their lengths. Confusing for those who always bought ‘regular’ like me I admit. The same leg lengths as before are still available though…

The other thing is, loads of the styles are very wide leg practically covering the shoe.
So they are meant to be worn ‘too long’ .
I won’t be - I hate wide leg trousers!

Is that true? Because my DS is on the shorter side and the GP told me that most children end up being about half way between mum and dads height. Which confused me because if he married someone slightly shorter then in a few generations my future relatives will all be finishing up 1ft tall 😂----

if you measure your child at two years old and then double it that’s what you’ll end up as as an adult. Strangely XH is about 5 foot seven I’m about 5 foot 10 and DS will end up exactly 5’9” according to that methodology.

Glad to hear this as their clothes have always come up short on my limbs compared to others so perhaps I can finally shop there!

I recently bought some trousers from M&S and reviews were complaining that they were too long. I’m 5’6” and was expecting regular to be too long based on those, however they’re slightly too short. The size guide above explains it: regular is for those 5’3-5’6 roughly and although I’m 5’6, I have long legs for my height - the same length as my much taller DH.

I think it’s natural that clothes sizes will change gradually. The younger generation do seem to be getting taller.

I tried on a couple of pairs of regular length wide leg trousers in M&S last week and I would have needed stilts to stop them trailing the floor. No pair of glam rock boots in the world would have cut it. The argument about people getting taller is irrelevant here because we're talking at least 4 inches of excess fabric. I don't believe women have suddenly shot up by that much. I'm 5ft 7in - not especially tall, but certainly a couple of inches above average. I definitely shouldn't need short length trousers.
