M&S a shop for very tall people now!

Bloody hell- I was in a store today and it felt like an alternative universe where M&S think their customers are all thin and super tall but in reality the majority of customers are average or short and more likely to not be skinny as they are a bit older.

I used to be a regular or long in trousers, but they are cut for giants now. What on earth has happened to the sizing? Who is going to buy all this stock!? How can a shop not design clothes for its actual customers.

Another tall person here who is delighted. We're never catered for in shops- the Tall range, if there is one, is always online.

Icecreamandapplepie · 01/10/2022 22:06

Whenever I go in the skirts and trousers seem designed for shorties!

I have 33 inch leg, will give them another try.

Feels like most shops have a petite section so it's about time us bean poles we're catered for in store somewhere!

Rapidtango · 01/10/2022 22:07

Having spent years unable to buy trousers which don't flap about several inches above my ankles I can only say 'Hurrah'.

brusselsprout5 · 01/10/2022 22:10

5'2 too! It's been my absolute go to shop for years. A bit disgusted & reluctant to buy anything there now! Very sad! Envy

WhereAreWeNow · 01/10/2022 22:11

This is great news for me! I always found their trousers too short. I've just ordered a pair of jeans (long) to see if it's true that they're now properly long.

I feel the same. Next still do trousers which are genuinely petite/short.

Is that true? Because my DS is on the shorter side and the GP told me that most children end up being about half way between mum and dads height. Which confused me because if he married someone slightly shorter then in a few generations my future relatives will all be finishing up 1ft tall 😂----

Your GP is talking absolute nonsense! It certainly isn't the norm for either male or female children to end up halfway between their parents height. If they were, we would be gradually getting more homogenous in height, gravitating towards the mean. Which we're not!

Stats show the average man and average woman are getting taller. Just look around you at the height of the average young person these days!

Vallmo47 · 01/10/2022 22:16

Sounds like I need to check out M&S!! Almost all clothes I buy have too short sleeve and trouser lengths. God forbid you aren’t 5’6”.

Northernsoullover · 01/10/2022 22:17

I just bought a pair of their cosy jeggings. They fit into my ankle boot. I'm delighted at 5ft 10. Normally I would have to wear longer boots to hide the gap.

Claysta · 01/10/2022 22:19

I’m 6ft 2 and very happy with my recent M&S purchases …

Octomore · 01/10/2022 22:21

Tbh, given how many women are tall these days, more shops should introduce decent tall ranges.

I've had a lifetime of 'knee length' dresses that are mini skirt length on me, and supposedly regular length shirts/tops that expose my midriff (I carry my height in my torso). About time there were better options.

A petite woman can at least get skirts or trousers hemmed shorter. A tall woman doesn't have that option.

Seahorsesfly · 01/10/2022 22:22

So based on most of the posts im right - it is now a a tall persons shop! I'm the old average at 5'6 (and i am older) and now a short in M&S it turns out.

But you still have the option to buy the short/petite and alter the clothes to fit, right?

Tall women have never had that luxury.

Hm, sounds like utter bollocks to me.

Both my 2 and my partner's 2 (all boys) tower over their parents. I can think of many more kids the same, they all seem to be basketball playing giants around here.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 01/10/2022 22:28

They now do extra long trousers. It's great for me as I'm very tall, but wouldn't fit most people

Leakingroofagain · 01/10/2022 22:35

So where do I go if I want some nice plain stuff that is just 'acceptable' and not too noticeable so I can wear it repeatedly, not too expensive and I'm 5ft 4?

Busygoingblah · 01/10/2022 22:37

My 6 foot self has been back twice this week because it really is true. I ❤️ M&S

Some of the summer stock hasn’t changed yet I think (eg the black mom jeans) but the newer stuff is great. My ankles will be warm this winter.

Rapidtango · 01/10/2022 22:37

Surely they're still doing regular and petite ranges - not every single item of clothing in the shop is now based on a height of 6'2" (much as I would love that) Grin

LynetteScavo · 01/10/2022 22:42

At 5ft 6inch (with long legs and a short body Hmm) I have to buy M&S short trousers. I do have a regular pair of jeans, but they're rolled up several times. I only bought them because they didn't have any short one in stock. Yes, they think everyone is super tall and wears high heals.

PaceyWitter · 01/10/2022 22:51

I mainly shop online with M&S and they have actually introduced far more leg lengths recently in most of their trousers and even their dresses. Rarely go to physical shops as being plus size most ranges are only available online anyway.

twilightcafe · 01/10/2022 22:51

Fantastic.

Now if M&S can sort out their top lengths. They are often too short in the body for me.

flourella · 01/10/2022 22:52

I noticed this in M&S the other day. Held a pair of regular length jeans to me and they seemed like they might be too long. I am 5'8" or a bit over. I do have relatively short legs, but regular has always fit before.

People are getting taller, but not by inches from one generation to the next. A 2020 UCL study into average heights of 19 year olds in many countries across the world found that the average height of UK women that age was 163.9cm, or 5'4½". I don't see large numbers of young women and older teenage girls towering over me, so I'm always surprised when lots of people on here (not just this thread) reckon the average is now 5'6" or 5'7", and 5'10" is no longer noticeably tall for a woman. M&S seem to have bought into it, though!

I'm 5ft 2" and have no issue with the short or regular lengths fitting, depending on style.

Redtortoise1 · 01/10/2022 22:58

I went in today (5’9” here) and loads of pairs of jeans were the perfect length, I thought it was great as loads of shops have petite ranges in store but the ‘tall’ ranges have all shifted online-only in the past few years, which is a pain with all the trips to the damn post office for returns!

Jellybean23 · 01/10/2022 22:58

Maybe massive platform shoes about to make a comeback and M&S had advance notice?
