I need a new dress for a few events before Christmas ( dinner with a friend at The Wolesley, a conference in Boston, Paris with DD- life’s not normally this exciting). Normally I’d get something moderately stylish but safe from Hobbs. However, this came up on my FB feed and caught my eye. I like that the clothes are designed and made in England, and they are made from
natural fabrics.

Is it nice and quirky or peri-menopausal try-hard?

It's a lovely colour and very eye -catching. I imagine you could dress it up or down.

Thing that would put me off is the ironing.

When you have to wash it you'll want to treat it as a delicate and iron on reverse to keep the sheen but that will inevitably fade over time/wear i think.

Fraaahnces · 18/09/2022 18:18

Tastefully quirky! I really like it! If you can pull off that shape, go for it!

SnoopLabbyLab · 18/09/2022 18:19

Thank you. I agree the colours might fade and that will really affect the look. It would be one of those dresses you put on as you leave the house and pray you don’t drop a vol-au-vent down it!

Ooh that's a tricky one. I don't much like it, I'm the way I don't really like that Lindy Bop-type 50s look on most people. If you properly lean into it - immaculate 50s hair, red lipstick, heels - you could look amazing, in a knowingly retro sort of way.

But 99% of people (including the model on the ad) will just look a bit twee and dowdy in it. I certainly would.

KangarooKenny · 18/09/2022 18:30

I like it !

SocksAndTheCity · 18/09/2022 18:33

God, the styling in those pictures is really diabolical.

It's not for me, but that doesn't matter; I'm not sure it suits any of the occasions you mention either although it depends what you plan to wear with it?

Beyondshit · 18/09/2022 18:35

Not at all my style but I like it! You could dress up with heels and a clutch bag or down with boots and a tote etc.

MissyB1 · 18/09/2022 18:36

I love it! I would wear with black suede boots, and either a black biker jacket or velvet military type jacket.

Suzi888 · 18/09/2022 18:38

Not my style. Reminds me of Joe Browns quirkier designs a bit.

If you like it that’s all that matters.

Twattergy · 18/09/2022 18:39

The shape is nice, it's a bit twee/cutesy for me but if I saw someone else wearing it'd I'd think it was cool and unusual.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/09/2022 18:43

I like it, needs to be glammed up to not look twee - noticeable lipstick, good skin/foundation, moderately done hair and some sort of heel, could be quite low though.

what the f are those tights and shoes about in the pics

I would maybe have a look about and see if you can see anything that would be easier to manage and will last longer… but saying that, if you love it, go for it - just handwash, and not often.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/09/2022 18:44

Actually, flat ankle boots would work too..

I had just written almost exactly the same thing. It's a bit too Boden for me. I'm not sure what colour tights and what kind of shoes would work with it.

pilates · 18/09/2022 18:45

Sorry, it’s awful

rainydaysandcake · 18/09/2022 18:49

Love it - think it's great to wear something that looks more unique and stylish

declutteringmymind · 18/09/2022 18:50

I like it but there is a danger that it could look frumpy on women our age. Depending on your style, you could edge it up with a sharp jacket either biker or blazer, and some sharp shoes.

strawberrysea · 18/09/2022 18:53

I usually have really strong opinions on threads like these but I'm really torn with this one!

I'm leaning towards no at the moment because I'm not sure it's dressy enough for heels but too dressy for boots. Then again I am no fashion expert and to be honest dress terribly most of the time 😂

If you like it and feel confident in it, absolutely go for it

TheOGCCL · 18/09/2022 18:57

I like the colour/ fabric but I think it might be a difficult length to wear, better with heels for most heights, The dress seems to come in lots of options and they all look a little tricky to style.

NashvilleQueen · 18/09/2022 19:01

I love it in a Bletchley Circle sort of way.

Ahnobother · 18/09/2022 19:05

I've seen someone wearing a similar dress to this and she just looked fab. Wore it with mid high heels and lovely makeup.
Not for me as I'm short and fat but she was slim and wore it very well at a day time business event.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/09/2022 19:08

Love it but:

  • I don't think it would work with tights
  • I don't think the belt looks very flattering
  • it's more of a summer dress (bare legs and sandals/sneakers)
If you love it, buy it for next summer, but I don't think it's the right dress for the events you list.
Arnaquer · 18/09/2022 19:10

I like the shape, but the styling I'd very off putting

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2022 19:14

Quintessentially English in a slightly frumpy way. The Americans would love it.

Forpoxsake · 18/09/2022 19:20

I like the shape and the design on the top 3/4 but don’t like the country scene around the bottom.
I think it would be hard to dress with tights and jewellery without looking too try hard.

The shape of the dress is lovely though and that shape in a less fussy print would look great with different accessories and easy to dress up and down.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 18/09/2022 19:24

I don't particularly like it and can't think of a way to style it to make it less frumpy.
