I have a dress about 12 years old I really love and may wear again, and a pair of ski trousers I am unlikely to ever wear again (unless I need them because of the gas bill)

75 years old, I have 2 pairs of shoes from the 1940s.

AnnaFri · 25/08/2022 16:46

My signed polo from primary school (last day signatures etc.)

Outside of that a pair of size 6 knickers that have stretched to shit with me over the past 10 years but I won't get rid of because I can still pretend I fit in a size 6 something Blush

What a brilliant discussion.

I've got quite a lot of vintage stuff from the 40s and 50s in my wardrobe. Unfortunately it will all be staying in my wardrobe as it was bought (mostly from Affleck's Palace in Manchester) when I was a very skinny student in the 1980s. I can't imagine I will ever get back into it but I can't bring myself to gey rid of it. My oldest, and most favourite is a gorgeous wool suit from the 40s, but I don't think I could get the skirt much past my knees now, certainly not over my humungous arse. But it's labelled size 12! I'd say it's more like a modern day 4 or 6. My late Mum told me that she was a size 10 in those days so I can only imagine how thin she must have been.

I have a grey tweed Christian Dior men's coat that I bought in a charity shop in 1990 that I still wear most days in winter. I relined the sleeves last year with a torn thai silk scarf but otherwise it is still going strong. I also have a grey suit labelled "YSL for Fortnum & Mason" which is probably late 1960s and belonged to my great aunt - DD2 has her beady eye on it.....

dolphinsarentcommon · 25/08/2022 17:03

Seriously impressed with some of your wardrobes, and even more so by those who continue to wear vintage things.

My 10 year old monsoon dress is very insignificant lol

Yes a vintage 12 is now more like an 8
I had a 26” waist in the 70”s and that was a size 14! My waist is now 29” and some of my clothes are a 10

Fairislefandango · 25/08/2022 17:06

I have s pair of wide, floaty printed summer trousers which are 30 years old and still wear them. And probably quute a few things that are at least 20 years old. 12 years wouldn't seem very old to me tbh!

Bearsan · 25/08/2022 17:08

A Chipie t-shirt from the 90's still going strong.

Hadalifeonce · 25/08/2022 17:09

A poncho from 1975. DD wore it last year to a 70s party, and it was greatly admired.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 25/08/2022 17:13

Levi trucker jacket bought around 2000.

Black cocktail dress bought about a year later.

I’ve worn both in the past six months.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 25/08/2022 17:19

A black jacket I bought in 1983. It was from Hennes & Mauritz, or H&M as they're known these days 😄.

It originally had shoulder pads in (of COURSE it did!) but not any more. I often wear it. A sound investment.

Paq · 25/08/2022 17:34

A pair of block heel Mary Janes from 1994. I still wear them and have never had to have them resoled.

I have a coat from the 1920s but I hardly ever wear it as it has fur on it.
I also have a dress that was my granny’s in the 1930s.
i have quite a bit of stuff I wear regularly from the 80s.
I also have some things that were my great granny’s, they’re titanic era things but very fragile and can’t be worn.

CMOTDibbler · 25/08/2022 17:44

A silk brocade coat I bought in a vintage shop
in Oxford 33 years ago, and a naval frock coat from a vintage shop in Cardiff 30 odd years ago. Both had rotten linings and my mum relined them both, but they must have been at least 20 years old at the time.

jayhoo · 25/08/2022 19:23

A French connection tee shirt I bought with my first Saturday job pay . 1981

jayhoo · 25/08/2022 19:26

Oh, I've also got a gaultier cone bra dress with a Lycra body from his pret a Porte line, not coture but treasured

jayhoo · 25/08/2022 19:34

Oh god, I've got loads. A summer dress made by my mother for herself in 1959, plain fitted bodice, spaghetti straps , full skirt, knee length. The bodice is fully lined and the seam between the bodice and skirt is bound

5128gap · 25/08/2022 20:20

40 years! And I've had it from new! It's a burgundy ra ra skirt I bought in 1982, age 13 and could never throw away because it reminded me of my first teen summer. I put it on the other day too (stretch material!)😊

I have a black jumpsuit I bought when I was 13. I’m 60 next year and it still fits me 47 years on.
Slightly more recent, my daughter just wore the dress I wore in the evening of my wedding back in 1989 as bridesmaid dress to her sister’s wedding - so 33 years (that still fits me too 😀)

Does/did it have a long line jacket that went with it?

I went to a party at about the same time and everyone was wearing those. I was wearing a very pretty floral dress but got th piss ripped out of me all night. I'm still slightly traumatised decades on...

My oldest garment is a crocheted tunic top that I bought to go on holiday in 1993. Still fits. Still wear it. I also have some black evening tops bought in the early 90s. They still fit and still look stylish but I never wear black these days.

Also my "good" winter coat was bought in the 90s. It's a dark grey swing coat and while the label looks a bit discoloured, the coat is as good as new and still gets worn because it's a timeless style. It cost a few hundred (bought with a work bonus) but cost per wear is minimal.

AnchorWHAT · 26/08/2022 15:05

I have a grey trench coat from wallis with pleated vents that cost about £100 that my mum treated me to for xmas 34 years ago!

Rina66 · 26/08/2022 15:17

I've got a Wallis faux fur swing coat that will 32 this winter! I still get asked where it's from. I have a lovely old French Connection knitted set too - ski pants and v neck long swing top in a wine coloured knitted jersey. That could 35 years old.

JaceLancs · 26/08/2022 21:01

I have a coral colour Levi’s denim shirt that I’ve had for 30+ years - faded now to more of a peach colour
A navy velvet coat similar age
Pair of yellow kickers probably bought 40 years ago
hand me down fake furs from the 1950s onwards
not sure it counts as wardrobe but I do like antique jewellery - oldest ring is from 1760s - but I had to replace the shank as wore away and the lovely jeweller found me a broken ring with a 1730s hallmark to repair it with

Chobbers · 26/08/2022 22:20

A Burberry rain coat, navy blue, which is at least 30 years old.
I have it cleaned regularly and wear it every winter. Beautiful coat.

schnubbins · 27/08/2022 14:19

I have a Little Black Dress that I bought Christmas 1985 in Next .Long sleeved , straight and nipped in at the waist .A really lovely dress .I wore it so often and had such a good time then I could never throw it away .It doesn't fit me anymore but I will keep it.
