Anyone in their 50s and decided against Botox, fillers or anything but face cream?

I just wondered, prompted by the many recent threads. And not because you can't afford it either. I can afford them but have decided to age naturally for various reasons.

Feeling a little lonely though!

I'm mid 40s and haven't had anything done (other than hair dye). I don't plan to. I don't think I know anyone who has had stuff done. Maybe I'm just really oblivious to it but I think friends would talk about it if they were having Botox/fillers and I like to think I would notice.

Spanielsarepainless · 12/08/2022 09:26

I'm almost 60 and have been using Simple moisturiser with sunscreen on my face and neck since I was 14. No lines, minimal crowsfeet. My hands and hair probably give my age away but not my face!

MissyB1 · 12/08/2022 09:31

I’m mid 50s definitely won’t be having any Botox or other cosmetic treatments/surgery. I use good moisturisers and Rosehip oil, that will do.

My dh is a doctor and would be horrified if I was to risk having anything done just for vanity.

ButtonintheBox · 12/08/2022 09:38

Thing is - lots of you are saying you have fine lines or minimal signs of ageing. So once again I feel like I'm the only one with deep lines 😕 Surely not!

Abraxan · 12/08/2022 09:38

I'm 49y and no plans to have Botox, fillers, etc. I hardly manage to keep up with hair appointments so really can't see me going in for all the extra maintenance. Bit of face cream in a morning, a hint of make up (mainly a tinted suncream as face makeup in the summer) if going out/work and that's about it tbh.

The only person I know who does some of this kind of thing, and I suspect will do more as she gets older, is my friend who has is very early 40s, but she's always been very much into hair, make up, false nails, tanning, etc and it seems the other stuff is just stemming from that. She definitely doesn't 'need' the other stuff. It it's what she likes.

Baldieheid · 12/08/2022 09:38

Mid 50s here and nothing besides moisturiser, etc is used. The only person I know who gets botox is a friend's teenage daughter. She has severe cerebral palsy and botox helps her neck relax, so she's in less pain - it works beautifully. I can't see myself using anything myself but if it's used for cosmetic purposes and the user feels good with it, then great.

I am surprised that you seem to think that the default is that women think about doing these things i.e. they are normal. I would have thought more people don't do it and don't even think about it! I must be a bit behind the times....

no you aren't. I have never even considered it and don't know anyone who has.

picklemewalnuts · 12/08/2022 09:40

Me. I'd consider semi perm makeup. That's about it.

GrowlingManchego · 12/08/2022 09:41

I get compliments on my skin and apart from sunscreen, I use very few products. Id never say never about having work done in the future but so far it hasn’t been needed. Its quite normal to have a few wrinkles as we age.

Sleepyafternoonsinthesun · 12/08/2022 09:44

My skincare regime is exactly the same as yours OP. I don't want to inject botox or fillers into my face, it's fine as it is. Of course I look older, I am older. So much of the beauty industry is based on the lack of value placed on older women. That's what needs to change.

crosbystillsandmash · 12/08/2022 09:48

I'm 51 and have no plans to have Botox etc

I'm half Spanish so have been fairly blessed genetically and I mostly focus on staying slim and good skincare etc

I think how you dress, have you hair etc have a far greater impact on how you look than medical interventions!

Bearsan · 12/08/2022 09:54

Me but I have two friends who have. Both I could tell before they told me. It wasn't because it looked wrong or was really obvious, more that I see them a lot and they looked slightly different- a bit too taut and kind of waxy?
It was more about confidence than anything else because they are both beautiful and I never noticed wrinkles etc on them even when they kept pointing them out, they were barely any.
I'm not saying I never will have anything done but at the moment I don't have a wrinkle problem, maybe in 10 years I will and will succumb. My dmum is in her 80's and only has a few wrinkles so fingers crossed I'm going to be the same.

Tabbouleh · 12/08/2022 09:55

@Drivebye and others, I don't actually think this is the default. But I have noticed more and more quite young women on MN saying they are going to have it. MN posters of course are mostly middle class. So wondered if this will be more common going forward. I also see a lot of cheap tweakments being offered.

I am focusing on staying slim and healthy in my 50s and that will give me quite enough to do.

I’m 65 and would be to scared to have anything done. I have good skin, always use sun cream (didn’t in my youth) and just cleanse and moisturise with Elemis stuff.
I’ve even stopped dying my hair blonde, grew it longer and it’s now a lovely silver colour. I’m quite happy with the way I look in my older years, not even bothered about the extra pounds I’m carrying😊

Lifeadmin · 12/08/2022 10:01

i haven’t had any work done, although lots of my friends have. I’ve decided to look my age, although I do get my hair cut and coloured regularly. And I’m on HRT , not sure if that helps with looks or just helps how I feel. Plus I’ve always looked young for my age, so maybe if I was wrinkly I would go for it.

Staynow · 12/08/2022 10:03

I'm 47 and won't, I can't be bothered with any faff - especially as once you do it you're going to have to keep doing it. I feel the same about dying my hair - I don't know how anyone can be bothered with doing it all the time. I'm a scruffy little thing generally though and ease and comfort are the main two reasons I do anything.

marriednotdead · 12/08/2022 10:05

I'm mid 50s and whilst I can see why some people want to do something about ageing, I'm not willing to take risks for vanity. I don't even dye my hair. Yes, there are dark bags under my eyes and my jawline is softening but it's part of the process and generally I am ok with my appearance.
Like others, I had greasy spotty skin in my teens which has definitely helped as I've aged, I'm only just starting to get a couple of fine lines.
I live in London and see too many overfilled lips, brows almost to the hairline and startled moon faces to want to chance playing with what I was given!

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/08/2022 10:09

I'm 53 and not used anything, grow old gracefully 😀only thing I do is dye my hair.

thebabessavedme · 12/08/2022 10:10

I'm nearly 60 and never had a 'tweakment', I am fairly blessed in the genes department, not many wrinkles at all and I have been asked if I have had botox on my forehead as it it very smooth still. I have always enjoyed fashion/make-up etc, plan what I'm wearing, that sort of thing. I have considered botox/fillers and discussed it with dh who has asked me not to do it (he wouldnt stop me, its my choice) he just does not like that 'look' and says I look lovely as I am😀My real worry is that being 10 years older than him that we willend up looking odd together, he is aging but in the way a lot of men do, ie looking distinguished rather than dishevelled

dworky · 12/08/2022 10:14

Me.

Strongly convinced they don't even make recipient look younger, just weird.

Fairislefandango · 12/08/2022 10:14

I'm surprised you're feeling lonely in your decision- I'm 50 and, as far as I'm aware, not a single one of my friends or family has had any of these things, and it certainly wouldn't occur to me to either.

I live in a fairly rural area where it's unusual to see women who are very done-up or high-maintenance-looking, and I guess I often really notice the occasional woman I do see who looks like they've had stuff done, because it's very much not the norm. I'm glad I don't move in circles where it is the norm tbh!

AuntieMarys · 12/08/2022 10:15

Early 60s and no treatments. I have bimonthly facials, use spf and have really good skin. I look a lot younger than my age

halohell · 12/08/2022 10:15

I think we as a society need to rethink our attitude to ageing, value the things that are good about each stage of life and be proud of looking our age, not spend huge amounts of money on procedures to de-age ourselves.

I don't want to pretend I've got less life experience, less maturity, have learned less and gone through fewer life challenges, so why would I want my face to look like someone 15 years younger than me?

I do understand that there's a lot of pressure to look youthful, but I wish more people resisted it and got angry about how ageist our society is, rather than just accepting it and trying to look younger.

SwedishEdith · 12/08/2022 10:17

I haven't "decided" not to as it simply wouldn't occur to me to do so. I do know a few people who do (at work) and it's one of the first things people mention when they ask if you know them.

onlythreenow · 12/08/2022 10:18

I'm in my 60s and don't know anyone who has Botox or fillers. I use moisturiser with a sun screen, and that's all I've used for most of my life. I've never dyed my hair either and have no plans to do so.
