Anyone in their 50s and decided against Botox, fillers or anything but face cream?

I just wondered, prompted by the many recent threads. And not because you can't afford it either. I can afford them but have decided to age naturally for various reasons.

Feeling a little lonely though!

Style and beauty is one of my big interests so I'm up for trying new things in this area. I don't think anyone should rule tweakments out altogether, but obviously if its of no interest then that's that.

Tweakments get a bad name because some people get bad ones, that they either like themselves or are quite upset about. Sometimes people get a bit addicted. I've had Botox a few times on my frown lines and can see how tempting it is, encouraged by the clinic, to have more but I don't. I do my frown lines as they genuinely make me frown less which has a psychological effect on my mood. I don't really care if people see my (plentiful) crow's feet when I smile but I don't want them thinking I am frowning at them. I highly doubt anyone has noticed as you just look subtly less tired.

I think you do have to be very clear on why you are doing it, since otherwise, if it's self esteem or body dysmorphia you won't solve anything.

I do worry about the next generations coming up as women seem to be starting this sort of thing younger and really destroying their natural beauty, that sort of TOWIE look. Everything is exaggerated like an animated film. Huge eyelashes and lips. That's when most people think 'well I don't want to look like that' and lump everything together. It's a bit like there are a million ways to decorate your home, we don't all want a bubble gum pink feature wall.

Oblomov22 · 12/08/2022 15:23

Me. None of my close friends have anything done either.

faffadoodledo · 12/08/2022 15:34

Not me! 56 and never been tweaked. But I live in an area where I suspect few do. And my friends haven't. We're just not into that kind of thing. I'm sure posters who've had Botox will say 'but how do you know?'. Trust me, I do! I see a couple of casual acquaintances out and about who I strongly suspect have, and am alarmed when I go to the dentist that so many you g dental nurses (aged around 30) are having it. But actual friends? No. Clearly birds of a feather flock together!
I have taken great care of my skin since my twenties though - hats and sunscreen so I know I'm not as wrinkled as I could be

pigalow27 · 12/08/2022 15:36

Face yoga and one of those Nu Fave micro current machines. The important thing for ageing is to try to keep the facial muscles working to avoid too much sagging.

heatissweet · 12/08/2022 15:53

Me. But a few of my friends have had it now and tbh are looking pretty good so far. It feels a bit of a lonely road to be the only one with wrinkles Confused but I don't want things injected into my head, I don't want to start on something I won't be able to stop (because who realistically is then going to stop doing it and instantly age a few years) and I'll rather spend the money on a mini break. I do look after myself in terms of exercise and eating fairly well though. Just going for 'good for my age.'

heatissweet · 12/08/2022 15:59

I'm grateful for my escape because it was only when I hit my late 50s that I fully understood how wrinkles are one of the minor, least vexing symptoms of ageing. A smooth forehead would be frigging useless and would frankly look absurd now that my jawline has collapsed and my skin everywhere is sagging and creping before my eyes.

It is my firm belief that Botox and fillers are the low hanging fruit, designed to suck you into a series of increasingly invasive and expensive treatments that will never end until you die

This is so interesting and I've never thought of it that way. But of friends I know, one has moved from forehead botox to other areas of the face as well, one has started on the fillers, and one is having surgery. It does seem like once you start it can escalate.

Beamur · 12/08/2022 16:03

I won't be having any of these.
One of my friends has had a little Botox on frown lines and it's helped her migraines too. It's just not on the radar of any of my close friends.
It's not really a look I aspire to or think looks good. Most people who have it don't look as 'natural'as they think it does. It's a good way to remove character from your face. I'm ok with ageing personally.

Not read the full thread.

Nearly 60. I take great pride in my appearance but would never inject or have surgery to look better. I’m not one for artificial looks. I’m proud of how I look naturally glowing, albeit some days are better than others.

I think I can tell when people have had enhancements and tweakments, although some are more subtle than others. Each to their own.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 12/08/2022 17:24

Early 60s- never considered it.

Most people don't in my opinion & my circles

Ilovemycat1 · 12/08/2022 17:37

Yes

They decided on face yoga and look great

BreadInCaptivity · 12/08/2022 17:58

I haven't but know friends who have/do.

I can't quite put my finger on it but their faces just look a bit "off". A pp used the term "waxy" and that's the nearest assessment I feel.

Personally I don't think it makes them look younger either, just a person of their age whose had stuff done.

They think it's really subtle (and they just look the same but a bit better) but it's not really and I think they've just got used to how they look now and normalised it.

However, if it gives them confidence and they like that look, then good for them.

Personally I'm less scared of looking old than I am of looking weird (and I'm sorry but having a perfectly smooth forehead does look weird).

Ragwort · 12/08/2022 18:07

Mid 60s and never even thought about it or considered it - neither does anyone I know, unless they keep very quiet about it. My DM is 90 next year and has lovely smooth skin.
I don't want to be judged on my appearance and I don't judge anyone else on their's. I don't feel the need to look 'younger', I am completely at ease with the fact I am 64 .. have lost a few colleagues and acquaintances through serious illness so what I look like is of no consequence to me at all.

KohlaParasaurus · 12/08/2022 18:12

Late 50s, look my age, but not very appearance-conscious, never even bothered learning how to apply make-up, and haven't had any intervention. There's nothing I want to do in life that would be made easier by having a smooth face and full lips. Splodge of SPF/cheap moisturiser and I'm sorted.

Apart from one person at work who became qualified to perform cosmetic procedures and has gone from looking like an ordinary middle aged woman to looking like a cartoon cat in front of my eyes, I don't normally notice whether or not someone has had treatment.

woodhill · 12/08/2022 18:13

I haven't either - mid 50s

Cervinia · 12/08/2022 19:27

I won’t do it OP, never. I embrace my wrinkles, I’ve never sat in the sun being a ginger and my forehead has lines, but my neck and chest is beautiful and crepe free.

i don’t care about wrinkles, I absolutely do not want that shiny stretched skin, slitty eyes and pumped lips. No way.

i only ever use Astral, and have for decades, it hasn’t stopped my forehead lines but my neck is great.

i don’t do nails, or facials or fake lashes, but I have a good hair cut and colour, a decent dentist and my eyebrows threaded. That’s it for me.

FourChimneys · 12/08/2022 19:38

Early 60s. No make up, a good regular hair cut but no colour, no fake nails. My only "beauty product" is a bottle of E45 once every couple of years for if I get dry skin. I'm slim and fairly wrinkle free.

I like to think my appearance isn't the most interesting thing about me. Same with my close friends, I doubt if Botox is even on their radars.

I do know someone my age who has had fillers and perhaps it was badly done but she looks slightly weird now (although I would never mention it!)

mumofthemonsters808 · 12/08/2022 19:39

I’m 51 and not had anything done, I do know lots of people my age who have had various treatments.I’d say we all look a similar age, they appear fresher faced, but to be honest my face ageing is the least of my problems.

neerg · 12/08/2022 19:48

I am 51 and none of my close friends have had Botox. We could all afford it but why would we. There are far better things we could spend our money on.

Snoredoeurve · 12/08/2022 20:10

Totally agree with this and there are a few on S&B who have documented every step.
All ended up with terrible sagging and facelifts.
This is what I dont understand?
Paralysing or not using muscles makes them atrophy, they are the underlying structure of your face so why would you do that Confused

shewhomustbeEbayed · 12/08/2022 21:55

I think people who have procedures often age worse, I’m thinking of Sarah, Duchess of York, she had a facelift but now looks much older than I think she would have looked had she aged naturally.

Wellthatgotbetter · 12/08/2022 22:14

The DOY has overdone it a bit. And what’s that historical writer with the lips? Someone should have stopped them. But the vast majority of people in the public eye HAVE had tweaks. Lines between the eyes, teeth done, small things that just make you look like you’ve had a good holiday.

faretheewell · 12/08/2022 22:15

Me. Don't think skin appearance is everything. I just take care to be as healthy and fit as possible.

TheGetaway · 12/08/2022 22:17

Those saying that none of their friends have Botox. You don’t know that!

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 12/08/2022 22:18

I've earned every line and wrinkle on my face, I don't intend to erase them.
I completely understand why people do it, it's just not for me.
