Red lipstick over 50

Hi

I love red lipstick but not worn for ages due to masks and not going anywhere much.

I fancy treating myself to a new one . I am over 50. Fair and lips not thin or thick, sort of average.

I thought id take a bit more care in buying something a bit more 'premium.' Partly as a treat but also taking into consideration getting it right as older. So not grabbing a cheap rimmel lippie that is fine when younger.

It seems you do get what you pay for in terms of quality in lipsticks.

So, I think I have cool undertones, so that means blue red. That has always been my preference, not orange toned.

Is matte better if I'm going with a more expensive classic red lippie and am over 50 ?

It seems that premium ones, even matte, tend to be less drying, last longer and better pigment. Factors whatever the age, but I feel even more so as older.

So any thoughts ? Matte ? Hate shimmer anyway.
What makes ?

Can anyone recommend a classic blue red Hollywood glamour red lippie to treat myself with !

Thanks.

Mac Ruby Woo

Seconding Ruby Woo. I'm also treating myself to Russian Red, also by Mac, which is a slightly deeper blue-red.

I see it a lot recommended, whats so good about it ?

Do you think matte is good with older lips ? Mine aren't thin thin, but not a bee stung pout either ! I've never worn matte before. But open to ideas as what to treat myself and make sure i'm getting something worth the money.

Forgot, budget up to around £35. This is a treat .

I used to buy lipstick queen as a treat before, but they don't seem to be going anymore. I loved their reds .

I like darker reds, blue reds.

So what is it about Ruby Woo ?

Lisa Eldridge Velvet Ribbon - classic blue red, beautiful texture and good staying power. All her lipsticks are lovely, and there's a lot of detail on the website about the colours.

I'm pale with cool undertones and really like Velvet Morning which is a little orange-ier but really brightens up my face. Looks great with just mascara and a touch of blusher.

Interesting , different formulas.
Also says not blue red and not orange red but true red. So it suits all. TBH I'm not bothered if it suits all as I know blue red is what suits me so think I might prefer something blue red and not worry if its a suits all colour.
Suits all might not be same as really suits a particular skin tone as its more a compromise?

They say velvet, so matte with a slight sheen . How do you find that , is that better than pure matte ? I quite like the sound of that. Some nice colours.

Also coming on to say Lisa Eldridge True Velvets. The entire collection is gorgeous, and they have swatches online/on social media to show how the colours look on different skin tones.

Gorgeous feel and they last amazingly well throughout meals etc. I have Velvet Ribbon, a blue based 'true' red, and Velvet Jazz, a darker red.

I love those two colours. How do they compare to matte , are they more flattering ?

I'm not sure whether matte or a shiny red is better when older and not having really full lips.

Not a lipstick, but the Hermes lip oil in Amarelle is fabulous. It's just gorgeous.

MoriaRoseForever · 09/07/2022 17:37

I also have blonde hair, I like the red to be striking and stand out . Tend to wear a lot of dark clothes as well.

I’m over fifty and very blonde and love Russian Red. It’s classic and wearable. I like the finish, but if I want a bit of shine I just put a bit of gloss over it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/07/2022 17:44

somewhere between matte and gloss is more flattering than matte. If I do wear matte it’s usually a coral or something lighter coloured.

I really like Mac’s reds but am going to have a look at ruby woo.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/07/2022 17:45

Not Ruby Woo! It’s too full on for me

I am going to look at Lisa A

addler · 09/07/2022 17:49

@MoriaRoseForever I wouldn't say they're full matte- I don't like matte as I find it too drying for my lips. But these feel so soft and hydrating. I've ended up buying some of the other nude and pink shades as well.

They also have a gloss in the same shade, I've seen some people combine the lipstick with the gloss when they want a different look.

LordEmsworth · 09/07/2022 17:51

I am blonde and mid 40s; since spending all my work time on zoom I have embraced the red as it really makes me feel better about my video image.

I love Ruby Woo, but you do need something like the Mac primer underneath because it's very drying.

I also like Laura Mercier, Dominate for blue red and Fire for Orange red. Both look great on me.

I am not really a fan of shiny or glossy - hate lip gloss - and I like a matte look, even as my lips are starting to get a bit thinner. So I definitely don't think it would be a problem to go matte...

Nomorefuckstogive · 09/07/2022 18:12

I have similar colouring to you and hate Ruby Woo on me! I like Mac Lady Danger and Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Elote, which is creamier and hence less matt.

Charlieiscool · 09/07/2022 18:23

I think a more sheer and not full dense matte look is more flattering. You can’t go wrong with Charlotte Tilbury and Lisa Eldridge does some lucent colours that still have plenty of pigment.

absolutelynotfabulous · 09/07/2022 18:34

I love Ruby Woo because it's matte (and has served me well under a mask 😀😀). I'm a greasy person and most lippies melt away on me, even though I'm early 60s.

Lookingoutside · 09/07/2022 18:35

You want Velvet Ribbon by Lisa Eldridge. It is absolutely the best lipstick in the world. Get the matching liner too 🥰 definitely worth it.

Also, just in case you fancy pink. Velvet Carnival is the most perfect blue pink I’ve ever used.

I’m tempted by these , I like that they aren’t matte matte . And yeah, can add gloss as you and @LunchPoems said . But can’t matte a gloss .

I wondered about Laura Mercier. Also they are in boots and I have some points to use , about £40 so an even better treat !

Chanel Rouge Allure Pirate. You need lipliner too.
