Red lipstick over 50

Hi

I love red lipstick but not worn for ages due to masks and not going anywhere much.

I fancy treating myself to a new one . I am over 50. Fair and lips not thin or thick, sort of average.

I thought id take a bit more care in buying something a bit more 'premium.' Partly as a treat but also taking into consideration getting it right as older. So not grabbing a cheap rimmel lippie that is fine when younger.

It seems you do get what you pay for in terms of quality in lipsticks.

So, I think I have cool undertones, so that means blue red. That has always been my preference, not orange toned.

Is matte better if I'm going with a more expensive classic red lippie and am over 50 ?

It seems that premium ones, even matte, tend to be less drying, last longer and better pigment. Factors whatever the age, but I feel even more so as older.

So any thoughts ? Matte ? Hate shimmer anyway.
What makes ?

Can anyone recommend a classic blue red Hollywood glamour red lippie to treat myself with !

Thanks.

So many great suggestions . I’m probably ordering online , so hopefully the pics on the websites are accurate .

I always get compliments when I wear Carnal by Estée Lauder, it's a very flattering softer yellow red, might be worth trying if you're out and about.

Also coming on to say Lisa Eldridge True Velvets. The entire collection is gorgeous, and they have swatches online/on social media to show how the colours look on different skin tones.

Gorgeous feel and they last amazingly well throughout meals etc. I have Velvet Ribbon, a blue based 'true' red, and Velvet Jazz, a darker red.

Torn between the jazz and velvet, both beautiful . Seems one is a bit darker , but similar ?

I have many of Lisa Eldridges lipsticks and love them. However, I very recently purchased Velvet Ribbon and I really don't like it. It doesn't look a true red on me and it bleeds on my bottom lip within minutes - without drinking or eating anything. I've not experienced this with any of my other LE lipsticks. Very disappointed.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/07/2022 21:42

Lovely thread. I prefer a deep pinky plum op. I am a typical summer. Ashy hair, tan, pink/blue tones to skin. Am a bit older and would steer clear of anything too red, too matt or too shiny. I like love pop and plum pop by Clinique. Also like Lancome, Clarins and Estee lipsticks. Cheap lipsticks make my lips sore and always have.

Can't do anything with an orange/coral/browny tone. Have Estee's Pure Colour Envy range is a perfect texture - haven't found the perfect colour.

Dior 999 matte!

Ooh was verging towards ribbon !

I'm going to rec maybelline 24hr liquid. There's tons of reds & I use them often as a base, blotter with favourite colour lipstick on top -

MissStarry · 09/07/2022 22:28

I prefer Russian Red to Ruby Woo personally - it seems to be that bit cooler on me and just suits me slightly more. I own both but only find myself wearing Russian Red.

l’Oreal liquid matte.

they have three different reds, one is blue based, the other warm and a pink red one.

liquids are very easy to wear, you can only use them as a stain if you wanted to.

NARS do them as well, if you want to go high end.

Well, I’m coming on to lower the tone with a Rimmel recommendation. Kate Moss for Rimmel No1 is a fabulous red - not too blueish and not too orangey. Seems to work with my pale skin and reddish hair. I’m comfortably over 50!

Oh I’m generally a lowered tone make up wearer ! Just bought a collection foundation and love it.

I just fancied a treat and going for a pricier lippie, hence doing lots of research .

I have a few Rimmel lipsticks, I think I may have that Kate Moss one . They are good.

Love this thread. I'm 49 and have many red lipsticks but never splashed out on a pricier one. Today I have been to a 40s revival at the Black Country Living Museum and red lipstick was everywhere. Absolutely love it xxx

I wonder if PP had a bad batch of Ribbon, I've never had an issue with it bleeding and love the colour. I am quite pale, but freckly, and suit blue based reds.

The jazz is quite a bit darker then the ribbon, I love both but probably wear the ribbon more, especially during the day.

WingingItSince1973 · 09/07/2022 23:07

Having great fun on Amazon looking at red lipsticks and they have a try on filter. Take a selfie then choose the colour and see how it looks. Not sure if 100% accurate 🤣

echt · 10/07/2022 00:11

Bobbi Brown Nude. Not matte but not shiny either. Despite the name, it's definitely red. Slightly warm in tone, but not orange at all.
When the first lockdowns approached I went straight out and bought two. Didn't want to face the apocalypse with crap lips. Grin
As a teacher, I was always on screen anyway, so had my face on as per.

I have fair skin too, and similar lips.

MoriaRoseForever · 10/07/2022 00:28

Sim, this has been so helpful. Not heard of Lisa Eldridge, so that’s a find.

No great rush to buy, so enjoying checking out the recommendations . Pleased others are liking the discussion as well !

At the moment the top contenders are

Lisa Eldridge Velvet Ribbon versus Velvet Jazz
MAC Ruby Woo versus Red Russian

And realise that with the mattes , which these are in differing degrees , comes the need for a primer .

And if I’m going to do this properly, which I’m into doing as part of the whole treating to a more premium red , I need to get a lip liner .

it’s the whole treating experience going along with a glam dramatic red lipstick !

it seems you don’t need the identical colour lip liner , it’s meant to be darker and not match .

oh also exfoliate lips and use balm and stuff to moisturise and get rid of flaking.

it’s all a bit high maintenance, but also quite liking the whole ritual to this..

suggestions for lip liners and primers ?

thanks again everyone .

Trinny London Rossy is gorgeous

Not a red for a lipstick as such, but MAC have a Lip Primer which is fantastic. It's a sleek stick format, and is a must for me under any bold colours or matte lipsticks. You need to let it set for a minute after applying, then anything you put on over the top will adhere better, apply more smoothly and be less drying.

lip primer and lip liner recommendations most welcome as well as red lipstick ones. I’m putting together my red lippie ritual treat which will need all three !
I probably will need an old school mirror with lights all around to sit in front of at a dressing table ! Neither do I have and no room for the dressing table either . So will need to reign in the full Hollywood glam red lipstick experience 😀

Love a lipstick thread!

Lippy novice here - how do you find out what colour undertones you have? I would have said I have warm - I have strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes, freckles and I burn but generally tan. I recently bought myself a cheap lippy not expecting it to be that great, and it's the best I've ever had! Almost plum coloured. Makes me wonder if I have a cool undertone?
Now looking for some other lipsticks to try but don't know where to start

I personally love Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo in Icon, I'm a very pale red head and this is the only one I've found that looks good on me!
