Red lipstick over 50

MoriaRoseForever · 09/07/2022 17:01

Hi

I love red lipstick but not worn for ages due to masks and not going anywhere much.

I fancy treating myself to a new one . I am over 50. Fair and lips not thin or thick, sort of average.

I thought id take a bit more care in buying something a bit more 'premium.' Partly as a treat but also taking into consideration getting it right as older. So not grabbing a cheap rimmel lippie that is fine when younger.

It seems you do get what you pay for in terms of quality in lipsticks.

So, I think I have cool undertones, so that means blue red. That has always been my preference, not orange toned.

Is matte better if I'm going with a more expensive classic red lippie and am over 50 ?

It seems that premium ones, even matte, tend to be less drying, last longer and better pigment. Factors whatever the age, but I feel even more so as older.

So any thoughts ? Matte ? Hate shimmer anyway.
What makes ?

Can anyone recommend a classic blue red Hollywood glamour red lippie to treat myself with !

Thanks.

I’d recommend MAC lip liner in Ruby Woo and also I always finish lipstick with lipcote- keeps it on all day and never smudges (thanks power-dressing 80s Mum for this make-up staple)!

I don’t wear lipstick without it - you can get it in any chemist/boots/Superdrug etc under £5

Maybelline also great for lip liner - I use a twist up red one and it stays like glue

Ah lipcote, I think I used that years ago. Yeah , it’s very old school but it works doesn’t it .
And from what I can see, nothing has been developed since to beat it .

So with lip liner, you go same colour ?
MAC matched the lip liner and lipstick, in a duo for Ruby Woo. , I saw also something about using a lip liner a few shades darker ?
I remember the 90s with lip liner dark and lighter lippie, just seen that’s made a comeback .

To me same shade exactly makes sense, not darker .

I just use cheap lip liners as they aren’t much different in my experience and they always break no matter how fancy

AgnesMcScrimp · 10/07/2022 13:28

My favourite red right now is Lisa Eldridge Velvet Cinnabar - a gorgeous brown-toned red, dramatic but somehow so wearable. Her Cinnabar gloss is beautiful too - either over the lipstick or on its own. I've tried with Mac Ruby Woo, but I feel like it leeches every drop of moisture from my lips and always ends up flaky ... Looks amazing on other people tho!

FreshFaceTime · 10/07/2022 13:34

I use the Rimmel clear lip liner so it doesn't matter what colour the lipstick is.

If you're contemplating cheaper options too - the red I wear most often at the moment is Revlon Fire and Ice. So bright and cheery and £3.49 on Amazon. Recommended by Lisa Eldridge on a makeup tutorial. I have a neutral skintone and I think it's described as neutral but might be worth a look?

thats My concern with very matte , I’m not sure how good it will look. I suspect it works well on younger lips .

lisa Eldridge seem to be matte but with a little sheen, that seems a little more forgiving.

Really loving the suggestions . The budget ones are also going on my list.

I usually have lots of red lipsticks, but covid meant wasn’t much point.

So although I want my “treat” red lipstick, and I do think you get what you pay for and want to have one premium in my collection, need a few daily budget ones as well.

Of course my premium is up to £35 . I can see they go even higher than that !

I think with lip liners there isn’t much benefit with paying lots. Only reason might be if the idea is to have the exact match , so would them need to buy the pricier brand.

Still mulling whether the lip liner should be an exact match . Seeing articles about the return of the darker lip liner . Although not the nude lippie/dark liner combo thankfully !

MAC Russian Red
MAC Ruby Woo

Just go to the MAC counter & they can help to match a lipstick/liner to your taste

Chanel Rouge Allure Pirate. You need lipliner too.

I came here to say this.

OP, I think Matt is fine at any age but shows up dryness and flakey lips more as you get older so worth taking care with that.

Interesting that there hasn't been more people suggesting Chanel. I sort of think of Chanel as very much classic red lips.

The classic names like Channel, Dior, YSL and more modern brands like Tom Ford don't seem to have cropped up. Perhaps they go over the £35 mark.

I find Ruby woo a bit orangey? Mac Russian Red is lovely. Haven’t tried Lisa E make up yet.

LunchPoems · 10/07/2022 16:35

Off topic, but the Lisa Eldridge foundation is amazing

Mac

Werk werk werk

Go into store and ask them to recommend

Just to update and thank everyone for their suggestions.

I went with Lisa Eldridge . Couldn’t choose between Velvet Ribbon and Velvet Jazz. So as I had some money from my birthday left over, I bought both .

So worth it . I have spent so much on lots and lots of cheap lipsticks and many not used as don’t like them .

But these two are lovely. One swipe is all that is needed . Can blot down to make more a stain.

ive never got how people say they can wear a lipstick all day, eat etc, and stays put. Apart from those shiny ones that I’ve used, that I find never look that good on , I’ve never had that.

the ones I’ve bought don’t last all day, but they don’t transfer anywhere as much as others. Hardly see a mark on glasses when drink. Can eat some things.

So best I’ve had and not really matte, the velvet finish is soft and fine for older faces . I find some matte isn’t flattering as I get older.

So thanks , never heard of Lisa Eldridge before and love the lipsticks. Plus cruelty free, which I try to stick to .

Seconding Ruby Woo. I'm also treating myself to Russian Red, also by Mac, which is a slightly deeper blue-red.

I have both of there and I LOVE them!

addler · 11/11/2022 11:55

Amazing, so glad they worked out for you! Thanks for coming back to update us.

WifeOfEddieMunson · 11/11/2022 12:12

Today I'm wearing Clinique Cherry Pop, it's easy to wear & not drying.
It works for me as I'm pale with blonde hair & this is a cool red.

I go by this site to find similar lipsticks, www.temptalia.com/

I've just ordered this - www.johnlewis.com/nars-powermatte-pigment-lipstick/dragon-girl/p3316135?deepLink=false

MoriaRoseForever · 11/11/2022 19:25

Thanks, but all spent out now on the Lisa Eldridge ones !

@MoriaRoseForever no worries glad you found a lippy 😊

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 11/11/2022 20:22

Well, thanks!

I just had a look and she now has eyeshadow as well.

Not a fan of pallets, but some of those colours are lovely, and come as a refill.

Lookingoutside · 11/11/2022 20:41

OP the Lisa Eldridge eye palettes went live today.

Merry Christmas! 😉

Chanel Demitri is lovely. Chanel lipsticks are a real treat.
