Is this dress inappropriate for a wedding?

humanpotato · 25/06/2022 09:00

My boyfriend said he thinks this dress isn't appropriate for a wedding because it's red? This is new to me? The last two weddings we've been to I've wore red and he didn't say anything. So I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are is this appropriate?

I don't know what thread this belongs in!

Uhuh.

This posting something ‘controversial’ to get a load of attention is something of a cycle for you isn’t it?

your super special and unique and don’t care what others think despite willingly offering up and asking what everyone thinks. Got it.

Enjoy your wedding.

Right literally nobody on here knows me so why would you believe I literally love the attention on here 🤣 most my posts get a few responses I didn't know it was going to blow up. I wanted some opinions? Never said I didn't care about anyones opinion? But ultimately I can make my own mind up... jeeeeeeeze

Ok

Of course I have answers, but I generally prefer to listen to the people who know best, who have first-hand experience and in-depth knowledge, and who have taken the time to research thoroughly and publish referenced, detailed articles, full of links to further resources and information, rather than just writing whatever comes to mind in the first 10 seconds of typing on Mumsnet.

Give me strength.

God @1000Pieces could you be a worse example of how not to educate people.

BridaBrida · 27/06/2022 19:23

The dress didn’t look good in the first pic but it’s actually lovely on you and you’re STUNNING - I think the red with black dreads would be so striking (but wouldn’t draw attention away from the bride).

Defo wear it 😊

Ddot · 27/06/2022 19:31

Hate the cultural appropriation thing, do we say a black woman straightening her her is wrong, no. Oh and I like the blue dress and I know it was a joke but I likes it

OP posted a pic of the dress from the website, then a pic of her in a different red dress and then a pic of her in the plt dress. Hope this helps 🥰

I don't get paid to educate people on here. If you want to carry on saying it's fine to be racist, do so.

HeadNorth · 27/06/2022 20:10

This thread is comedy gold, I salute you OP. You are young, beautiful and full of confidence, which really grinds the gears of some women. @1000Pieces is banging her racism drum so loudly she can’t hear her own internalised misogyny. I think we should all aim to have clothes and hair that Mumsnet thoroughly disapproves of - this board generally loves Toast sacks with grey hair - no wonder you are causing a meltdown.

How odd to equate opposing racism with misogyny @HeadNorth

I think you'd be surprised to see what i look like. But I'm not interested in making the argument personal.

Cultural appropriation is not ok. Racism is not ok. Inventing convenient "black friends" to excuse it is not ok either.

But sure. It's all about misogyny. White Britain is such a depressingly shit place sometimes.

Littlemeg37 · 27/06/2022 20:23

Christ most of you want to take a chill pill, enjoy your wedding and wear what you want, you will look lovely.

This sort of comment is wearing however. Even when I was young and beautiful I still wouldn't have been seen dead in that dress.

So now you're outright calling the OP a liar?

Fedupofthis123 · 27/06/2022 20:31

Do I need to duck and run for cover if I say that I really like the dress..? 😅
Then I saw your septum piercing and dreads and thought this is a person I could get on with!

I’m sure you will look incredible op!

You're UNREAL @1000Pieces . And don't worry you ain't educating anyone.

And seriously, did I say that?!!!! It's all part of your thing I suppose.

placewherewebelong · 27/06/2022 20:36

holy fuck, OP said about 13 years ago she wasn't wearing the dress!!

How did we get to misogny and racism?!

Quicknamechangefortoday · 27/06/2022 20:37

we have moved on, she now is in fact wearing the dress 😂

SaveTheSharks · 27/06/2022 20:40

@1000Pieces are you black? I only ask as I’d be interested to know a black perspective on the OPs dreadlocks and, regardless of the articles you’ve posted, whether day to day, people on this forum feel the same way? I’m genuinely interested as I haven’t heard of this before. I have family who live in Spain and they get their hair dressed/braided on the beach by black women who do it as a job. I didn’t realise that people were uncomfortable with it, so it’s an education opportunity for me.

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 18:25

You know there are actually some really nasty racist people out there who actually do discriminate people based off skin tone, police brutality etc.

Me wearing dreadlocks isn't where problems lay. I like a style that is found in black cultures and others, I'm far from a racist.

We all have our own opinions and views but I believe there isn't anything wrong with appropriating from different cultures. You yourself at some point will most likely have worn something that isn't inspired or from your origin... and is that such a bad thing?

Racism doesn’t exist only in the joining the KKK and telling slurs at black people form.

Dreadlocks look terrible on white people anyway, ethically wrong or not they don’t have the right hair type for it.

Wear them if you want but don’t expect people not to comment on them, especially when you’ve posted a picture of them on a thread specifically for people to comment on them.

I thought people were going a bit far with the dress critical but I have limited sympathy for such a blatantly racist poster.

Not even sure why I’m wasting my time commenting as I’m sure this thread and all the photos have been posted purely for a reaction anyway!

jewishmum · 27/06/2022 21:29

While 1000Pieces may have been OTT, I do agree with the sentiment that locs are for Black hair and not needed by Caucasian hair type. They shouldn't be a costume for caucasian hair to try on and take off when bored of the style. Black hair is harder to maintain and expensive to style. That said I wouldn't tell anyone what I thought if I saw them wearing locs badly on their white hair. I would just privately laugh at how silly they look. I also don't agree with OPs dress being appropriate for a wedding, or her attitude on this post, replying to every negative comment. If I were to ask something for opinions I'd just go ahead and read the replies, not having to interject with every little discrepancy I have with a comment. Does sound like you're attention seeking though you are adamant you are not.
