Is this dress inappropriate for a wedding?

humanpotato · 25/06/2022 09:00

My boyfriend said he thinks this dress isn't appropriate for a wedding because it's red? This is new to me? The last two weddings we've been to I've wore red and he didn't say anything. So I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are is this appropriate?

I don't know what thread this belongs in!

@1000Pieces omg it's not that deep.

You, as a white woman with little to no interest in racial politics, think "it's not that deep".

Many Black people disagree with you. It might be OK - it might not. At the very least it is, in fact, 'that deep'. You don't get to just unilaterally jeer at and reject everything that they have said and dismiss it as trivial nonsense.

OP asked for opinion on a dress. Look what happened. God bless Mumsnet!!!😂

Yes. And then she said that she was going to have "dreadlocks" [sic] put in and how she knew she'd be ripped to shreds for that, with a crying laughing emoji.

Literally no one would have known about that, or brought it up as an issue, if not for the OP deliberately introducing another goady, inflammatory topic.

I mean, feel free to go and tell Black Mumsnetters that they are laughable idiots for thinking that hair might be a big deal:

You know there are actually some really nasty racist people out there who actually do discriminate people based off skin tone, police brutality etc.

Me wearing dreadlocks isn't where problems lay. I like a style that is found in black cultures and others, I'm far from a racist.

We all have our own opinions and views but I believe there isn't anything wrong with appropriating from different cultures. You yourself at some point will most likely have worn something that isn't inspired or from your origin... and is that such a bad thing?

Meanwhile, you could try reading any of the three articles I've posted in this thread that explain (to anyone who is open to listening and learning) why this might be an issue.

It's part of a bigger problem which you could help by not, ya know, having dreads. If someone is telling you that for a vast number of people you having that hairstyle is seen as culturally insensitive then it might be better to listen and have a think on it rather than double down and waffle out some nonsense.
I mean even the definition of appropriate should clue you in on it not being ok.

Bloody hell, you really went there?!

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 18:35

Or maybe people like you are just the issue just a thought 🤷🏻‍♀️ nobody is actually hurting anyone with a hair style... if I'm racist like you say for my hair then my black friends must be racists too... no?

What's your view on white people who are born with afros using black hair styles to protect their hair? Not common but their are white afros.

Or black people bleaching their hair blonde? When it's not common for them to be naturally blonde.

Or wearing kimonos in the summer?

Or do we just pick and choose what culture appropriation is?

….apart from the bit where you tell black people offended by a hair style that they’re wrong to feel that way?

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 18:37

Also can I note I've never met anybody in real life who has said anything negative about my dreads or received any negativity about them.

@Cornettoninja where did I say anybody was wrong for their feelings?

In another thread you named the area in which you live and work. That area is 97% White, 3% Asian, and 0% Black.

So it's not really surprising that you've never met any Black people in real life who have expressed any negativity about your "dreads" [sic].

if I'm racist like you say for my hair then my black friends must be racists too... no?

No idea what you mean by this.

I have posted three different articles now, all of which explain in a clear, polite, accessible way why many Black people consider this to be an issue.

You are so sure that you know better than all of them, and that you can just laugh at and dismiss everything they've said without even bothering to read and think about it for a moment.

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 18:39

@Cornettoninja where did I say anybody was wrong for their feelings?

You clearly think they are because you posted a load of questions that have answers if you could be arsed to even scratch the surface of the subject.

You clearly haven’t because you’re satisfied that you’re right and that’s that. Your defence and following questions show that and I’m cringing for you tbh.

Wouldloveanother · 27/06/2022 18:43

Why can’t OP have dreads if she wants?!

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 27/06/2022 18:44

I mean, feel free to go and tell Black Mumsnetters that they are laughable idiots for thinking that hair might be a big deal:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/black_mumsnetters/4578007-school-uniform-and-hair

But that thread isn't about appropriation- it's about white girls being allowed to have dyed hair when black girls aren't. Black girls aren't allowed braids at that school but it's not saying anything about white people having braids.

Yes. I realise that. It was just in 'trending topics' so it was the quickest one to link. There are many threads in BMN that are more directly relevant - or indeed, OP could go and ask the question there, as she's so sure that she's right.

I've also posted links to three very good articles that explain things in much more detail and have many links.

But if the OP dismisses all of them immediately, out of hand, without even bothering to think about it, because it's a laughing matter, and she doesn't care, then what does it matter?

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 18:48

@1000Pieces yes because I haven't been anywhere else other than where I live. Do you have any actual answers to any questions other than read an article?

Of course I have answers, but I generally prefer to listen to the people who know best, who have first-hand experience and in-depth knowledge, and who have taken the time to research thoroughly and publish referenced, detailed articles, full of links to further resources and information, rather than just writing whatever comes to mind in the first 10 seconds of typing on Mumsnet.

You know it's OK to admit that you might be wrong about something? And that it might be worth listening to what other people - people who know more than you about it - have said?

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 18:53

I like dreadlocks ... I wear them... I feel good in them... that's it ... people should be free to dress how they like. Surely there's bigger things going on that actually should upset people than how I have my hair? Just my opinion 🙂

OP posts:
TheLassWiADelicateAir · 27/06/2022 18:53

I think "dreadlocks" probably aren't a good look on white people but one of those articles cites Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow as guilty of appropriation. White people did and do put hair in braids, plaits , pigtails without appropriating anything.

Cornettoninja · 27/06/2022 18:57

Uhuh.

This posting something ‘controversial’ to get a load of attention is something of a cycle for you isn’t it?

your super special and unique and don’t care what others think despite willingly offering up and asking what everyone thinks. Got it.

Enjoy your wedding.
