Is this dress inappropriate for a wedding?

My boyfriend said he thinks this dress isn't appropriate for a wedding because it's red? This is new to me? The last two weddings we've been to I've wore red and he didn't say anything. So I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are is this appropriate?

I don't know what thread this belongs in!

@1000Pieces

Right Japan then... best not where that then otherwise you'll be a racist... best tell black people to not bleach their hair blonde either? (Also tho not many, I am aware black people can be born with blonde hair) funnily enough though not many white people can be born with Afro hair... my step dad is one of them... would he be a racist if he decided to use it as a hair protectant hair style? Which I know some black people use these types of styles for?

Oh ok, I’ve just found this regarding the origin of the kimono. Perhaps there are some discrepancies regarding this.

It's the national costume of Japan. It says that in the picture you posted. It's a Japanese word. It's the key symbol of Japanese national identity.

Given the op's general attitude towards cultural appropriation and racism, I think the idea that she is aware of the possibility that the Japanese national costume, and a Japanese word, may relate to something that happened 14,000 years ago (as opposed to just being really ignorant) is... unlikely.

Aren’t women allowed to dress for themselves though ivylane? I buy outfits that are short or show cleavage or my back etc. I buy them because I like them and I want to wear them. Why is the assumption that women are dressing to capture attention? That sounds like something the patriarchy would have us believe. Why do you assume the OP wants to ‘look as sexually attractive as possible’? And so what if she did? Why would it matter?

Oh come on! 😂Do you genuinely believe that the OP doesn’t want as much attention as possible on her with this dress?! If she wasn’t incredibly concerned with what other people think then she would just wear the dress and wouldn’t be posting on here would she? This is all about appearing as sexually attractive as possible and I’m just suggesting that is a sad look at someone else’s wedding.

Did you read the article at all?

"Is it ok for me to dress up as a flamenco dancer with blonde dreadlocks for a wedding?"

No, probably not.

Quicknamechangefortoday · 27/06/2022 11:41

Oh yes I know that 1000pieces I was just musing about the origin as I knew at some point I’d been told they actually originated from China. I remember thinking that was at odds as to what I’d always known/thought. The text does also clearly state that they do in fact originate from China. I know they are Japans national dress, I’m not disputing that.

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 11:41

@1000Pieces I had a look. I still think cultural appropriation is something which is ridiculous. I am not racist because I like dreadlocks. Simple as that.

Why do you seem to believe that the OP wants to look as sexually attractive as possible ivylane? Where are you getting that from? One persons opinion on something being ‘sexually attractive’ may not be another’s 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don't think the op was commenting on an obscure historical theory that Japanese national costume actually originated in China... interesting though that may be.

Her follow up post confirms that. And also confirms that she is completely dismissive of cultural appropriation and of non-white perspectives on it.

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 11:44

@Ivylane Yes I am just burning with desire for all this sexual attention! Everyone will have forgotten the bride... bride who? They'll all be too busy having a orgy with me in the back to notice anything... 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's not about 'liking' dreadlocks (Incidentally a term that many Black people believe to be derogatory) but about appropriating other people's cultures, and dismissing their opinions because you believe yours is more important.

its all jealousy. Op is beautiful, confident and individual; and it can bring out the worst in other women. Now they’re accusing her of racism! Madness. OP, I hope you have a lovely time at the wedding. Ignore Ivy & the rest, they need a G&T and a few deep breaths.

This is the impression I’m getting on many levels tbh.

Horses did courses and all that but it’s evidently transparent as the thread goes on.

1000pieces my comments about China are nothing to do with what the OP does or doesn’t think. They are not relative to her. I was merely just musing on something I’d been told about twenty years ago.

GussyPalore · 27/06/2022 11:47

humanpotato · 27/06/2022 11:22

Actually I'm English and a lot of us have Cristian and Saxon heritage and they dreaded their hair, it was actually known for Jews and Christian'a the dread the front parts of their hair in front of their ears 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, why is it such a negative thing to appropriate from other cultures? Should we only be allowed and entitled to be inspired from our own country and roots? That's very boring... I hope you've never worn a kimono in the summer because that's Chinese would be very inappropriate! 😱 .... god forbid we enjoy parts of other country's beautiful styles etc...

OMG it is Jewish MEN who wear payot and not for a dress up reason.

I’m getting the idea that she wants to look sexually attractive from the picture of the dress she has posted on this forum. I’m also getting the vibe that she’s so incredibly bothered about how good she looks at someone else’s wedding because even though someone who presumably loves and cares about her has gently tried to tell her it’s not appropriate, she’s gone so far as to post about it to get the opinion of hundreds of complete strangers to presumably validate her outfit choice. Even though the majority of the strangers she has sought the opinion of have also disagreed with her and told her it’s not appropriate, she still intends to wear it anyway, but only in the evening. Where do you personally draw the line on what someone can wear to someone else’s wedding- would you support a woman who turned up to your best friend’s wedding in a bikini? Or a see through dress? Would you celebrate her for “dressing for herself?” Genuinely interested!
