If you met a woman in her 50s without many wrinkles or "11s"....

.... would you assume she had had Botox? This isn't a stealth brag btw, I am not referring to myself (though I have not had Botox). Just a general and random question.

Also, would it make a difference if the woman was Asian or black?

You can always tell when someone has had work done. With some it's better than others, but you can always tell.

How can you tell? Aside from the obvious bad work you see, that leaves people shiny and immobile, or overly puffy, what are the tell tale signs when the work is good?

PattyMelt · 22/06/2022 22:18

I don't assume anyone has had Botox unless their face doesn't move when they smile, or laugh.
I'm 60 and just starting to get fine lines around my eyes and mouth. I had none at 50.

Lightning020 · 23/06/2022 08:33

I am 58 and did not start having dermal fillers until age 54. I am blessed with good genes. Barely any wrinkles to this day.

WilsonMilson · 23/06/2022 08:44

Botox is obvious, it’s not just wrinkle free, there’s a certain shine and look to the skin and arch of the eyebrows. So, I wouldn’t assume a lack of wrinkles meant Botox. I can spot fillers and/or Botox a mile off.

I asked this before, but how? Obviously if there is a shine and odd arch to the eyebrows that's a giveaway, but the people I know who have (good) botox don't have this, so what are you spotting a mile off?

goldfinchonthelawn · 23/06/2022 09:06

No. I have a friend who is in her sixties and looks thirty. Never had work done. She just has the most stunning skin.

MsDirection · 23/06/2022 09:20

I wouldn’t think about it. Im in my 60s and none of my friends have had Botox. Only one is very wrinkly. A lot is genetic, dependant on sun/smoking/stress. I’d not assume anything about a lack of wrinkles. I’ve got very few but neither did my parents or grandparents so it’s probably just the luck of the draw and maybe not having smoked.

Goodbyecustardtart · 23/06/2022 10:10

It’s genes. My mum is nearly 90, no wrinkles. I’m 62, ditto. My best friend, same age, very similar lifestyle has lots, as does her mum.

For me, it's the movement of the face rather than the skin. Even small amounts of Botox placed well lead to an unmistakeable change that's very obvious when you know what to look for.

SexyBastardSmile · 23/06/2022 10:20

60 + year olds that look 30 ....and 90 year olds with no wrinkles? The beauty industry need to test on these super humans to find their secret. 😬

The skin looks tight I know people say oh if its done well you can't tell but I think you can. Close friend had a "refresh" recently as well as lips she didn't announce it but I could tell she just looked different.

Squills · 23/06/2022 10:58

@SexyBastardSmile

There is no super-human magic that the beauty industry can study because it is simply down to genetics.

I won't post a photo of myself on-line but I can assure you that I am nearly 67 and have no wrinkles on my face. I do look a lot younger than my actual age as does my son who is in his early 40's.

No 60 year old is going to look 30 (whatever they choose to believe) because there's no way to prevent the skeletal changes that occur with age, regardless of level of fitness or flexibility, etc. If you walk behind a person, even without seeing their face or hair, you can guess their age fairly accurately just by the way they move.

Very slight bump under the eyebrows often, so the facial contours are a tiny bit off. One bit of the face looks a tiny bit different to the rest. Sometimes it's a bit of a raised eyebrows expression or a shiny area but not always. That's what puts me off having it tbh as I notice on others. But I wouldn't say to someone, so they might assume I couldn't notice they'd had it.

AdoraBell · 23/06/2022 13:38

I would only think, not assuming, that she was using sunblock.

Floisme · 23/06/2022 13:44

I know lots of 60+ year olds who look good - and when I'm on top of my game, I think I'm one of them.

I don't know a single one who thinks they look 30+. They would laugh at the idea.

When people tell me I don't look my age, I assume it's either a platitude and that what they really mean is that I look good, or it's because they know so few women over 60 that it's a shock to realise we don't all look like Grandma Giles. (Look her up if you're too young.) I know it's well meaning so I always say 'thank you', but I'd much prefer it if they were honest and just said, 'Looking good today, Flo'.

SommerTen · 23/06/2022 13:49

My mum is 73 but can pass for 60.
She has a few wrinkles round her eyes but no deep lines in her forehead and definitely no 11s.
She's always worn moisturiser with spf15 or high spf facial sun lotion for 30 years since it became a thing... and always wore face cream since about age 12.

She's never been abroad so never been in really hot sun. Never smoked or used a sunbed, not drunk much alcohol either.

She IS getting a cataract- the result I'm sure of hating sunglasses. I definitely advise everyone to wear sunglasses in bright sun!!

SommerTen · 23/06/2022 13:50

I know my mum looks in her 60s because I have colleagues of that age and they think my mum is their age.

RevoltingHumanHead · 23/06/2022 14:29

No 60 year old looks 30. I don't know anyone, pleb or celeb, who looks 30 years younger than their real age. I can think of a few 80 year old women who could pass for 65 though.

Caminante · 23/06/2022 14:34

I'm also dying to see photos of everyone but I get that it's not something people really want to do (or even a good idea).

I've never had good skin as such, always a bit bumpy and spotty and slightly oily especially in my thirties, but I definitely looked young up until a couple of years ago at 53. It seemed to change very rapidly at that point. I'm assuming it's menopause related, although I'm on HRT.

It's not just about having good skin, it's about having that fresh, youthful look, that natural plumpness of the skin and bright eyes.

I had it until I didn't and now I want it back 😂 but I'm not going to do anything about it except try and live as healthily as I can and avoid the sun.

Holmgang · 23/06/2022 14:56

I would assume they had good skin, Botox and fillers etc aren’t really on my radar so wouldn’t automatically cross my mind.

It does annoy me when people proudly attribute their lack of wrinkles to not smoking, or drinking lots of water etc though. There are plenty of us who do all of that and still have shit skin! I’ve had wrinkles since my 20’s!

Cameleongirl · 23/06/2022 15:40

I don't know many people who have 11's, tbh. Perhaps I just know very happy people!

palygold · 23/06/2022 15:43

My mother is late 60s, no '11' lines. I suspected her of having had some help, but she hasn't.

It will depend on factors such as face shape, genetics etc etc. some people frown a lot and you can see '11' lines forming from late 20s and early 30s in those cases.

palygold · 23/06/2022 15:45

My mother did smoke (gave up some years ago), likes wine, and sunbathing, and has/had a stressful job.

Luck, genetics. I hope it's passed on to me.

smallbeetle · 23/06/2022 15:49

Bloody hell at the people in their 50s and 60s with no wrinkles!

You must have excellent genes and quite immobile faces. I have a smiley, creasy face and frown a lot too, so definitely getting wrinkles!
