Which luxury watch brand?

JuneyJune · 08/06/2022 16:03

I'm an Apple Watch kind of girl but my mum is insisting in buying me a "proper" watch.

So just that really.

If you have a flash watch - which and why?

Do they hold value?

I sort of think I'll get one I can just wear rather than keep it for special occasions. (When I tend to borrow a lovely Cartier one of my Mum's anyway.....)

I think we’d need an idea of budget - they a huge range of brands and alot of choice.

I have a Rolex DateJust - oystersteel with white gold bezel. It more than holds in value in the current market

superplumb · 09/06/2022 06:50

I'd love a rolex datejust with diamond as the numbers, silver with gold. Keep looking, they keep getting expensive. Silly really because I only wear my watch at work and that's just so I can count my steps!

Mrcpy · 09/06/2022 07:16

I’d say Longines and Tudor are the brands I look at most

LadySpratt · 09/06/2022 07:18

Longines Dolcevita (not with the Roman numerals). Not chunky at all so I can wear it with formal evening dress without it looking out of place or chunky.
Had it for 20+ years. Love it to bits.

queenofarles · 09/06/2022 09:08

My all time favourite is the Rolex yacht master,.
had it for so many years .

handbagsandholidays · 09/06/2022 09:21

I would say Rolex but if not then Tudor, longines or perhaps even Tag Heuer x

Trafficjamlog · 09/06/2022 09:43

Always a very simple rolex. Timeless and hold their value brilliantly

JaceLancs · 09/06/2022 09:47

I’m an omega fan
I have 2 vintage gold ones and a gold and stainless constellation for every day

this is my dream watch

JuneyJune · 09/06/2022 11:41

Thanks all.

Budget is pretty loose but I'd feel really awkward having a watch that cost more than a new car!

I looked at the Rolex DateJusts. I like the ones with the single diamond for each hour but find the ones with more than that a bit OTT for my taste.

There was also a Tag that looked almost the same but way cheaper. What's the deal there?

History, prestige, the movements… quite a lot!

But if you’re buying what you love the look of it. Then go with that as you’re defining criteria

WowStarsWow · 09/06/2022 14:08

I have an omega constellation, just because I love it. It was a present for a big birthday. The same watch now costs twice what mine did, and I only got it 6 years ago.

Why not find a high end watch shop near you that has a few brands and try some on? If you are in London, Watches of Switzerland is good but some branches of Ernest Jones can also have a nice variety.

BattenbergdowntheHatches · 09/06/2022 14:10

My Omega constellation is scratched to ribbons after very light wear. I’d get a Rolex next time.

Blossomtoes · 09/06/2022 14:37

The Longines Dolcevita is very nice. With a bigger budget I’d go for a Cartier tank.

mowglika · 09/06/2022 15:03

Lucky you!

Certain brands will hold value better than others, but it also depends on what you like as well. I would go into a shop and have a try on of different styles and brands and see which ones you prefer.

I have a longines prima Luna which I love for everyday wear. My favourite is my piaget miss protocole but it really only comes out for special occasions so on balance I’d say an everyday watch/style are better buys

I've had mine for 30 years and it's not scratched at all. If I were to have another luxury watch. I'd chose a Cartier tank.

IRememberXanadu · 09/06/2022 15:35

Tag are excellent watches - extremely well made and they last forever. The Aquaracer or the Formula 1 models are particularly nice for ladies.

Siddalee · 09/06/2022 15:41

I have an Omega constellation watch too- though not in the league as the one linked to above. I got it for a significant birthday.

I choose an Omega as my dad had an Omega Sea master. He passed away 14 years ago and all of his jewelry went to my brother, so having an Omega feels like a link to him. Plus as it has stars on it, it sort of makes me think of him looking down on me- (though he was a complete atheist so would hate me thinking that 😊).

NatMoz · 09/06/2022 15:50

I have a vintage white gold Omega with diamonds around the face. I only wear it for special occasions though.

LesLavandes · 09/06/2022 16:56

I think it is very difficult to buy a Rolex these days. You can't go into a shoo and just buy one. A bit like some Hermès handbags

BattenbergdowntheHatches · 09/06/2022 17:05

@luckylavender from what I read on forums at the time, it's an issue with the more modern watches - mine is only 8 years old and looks as though I've been gardening in it. (I haven't). It was a gift from my late MIL - huge sentimental value - so I still wear it despite scratching, but it annoys that my everyday DKNY £50 watch is nearly 10 years older, worn daily and looks in much better nick!

Agree the Cartier tank is beautiful.

queenofarles · 09/06/2022 17:16

Yes specially steel ones, but I think it’s just for some popular models, like the Coloured dial oysters,

GrazingSheep · 09/06/2022 17:20

MIL has a Patek Philippe. I had no idea it was worth much until I googled after reading these posts.

BreadInCaptivity · 09/06/2022 17:25

I'm a Cartier fan.

Have two of them. One was a 21st present the other for my 40th.

Love them both.

One has a leather strap and the other is a mix of steel and gold. Neither look too flashy for daily use but they are beautiful enough to wear in the evening also.

I often get compliments saying that's a lovely watch without people realising the brand and personally I really like that - it's why I didn't want a Rolex (as much as I like some of them).

woahwoahwoah · 09/06/2022 17:26

Cartier Tank. Mine is in excellent condition after nearly ten years
