Hullo, this dress is so far out of comfort zone it hurts. My usual style of dress is work pencil dress or cheapy sundress. Mostly I kick around in jeans and a T-shirt.

It for Ladies Day at Ascot. Intending to wear it with a pale silver/grey wrap and pale silver/grey barely there heeled sandals.

I'm not sure on it, I have the build of a hedge sparrow and I wonder if this makes me look a little like I'm playing dress up n a Disney Princess dress? It definitely needs a stitch at the bust and I'd obviously wear a different bra (this one is a very padded front close) so I wouldn't look as out of proportion booby.

@LadyFlumpalot so you want something romantic and flowing?
(Are you allowed bare arms at Ascot?)

Yes, ideally! And yup, we're in the Windsor enclosure where there is no official dress code but you are encouraged to wear "smart daywear"

PickAChew · 16/05/2022 23:57

It's too long in the back for you. It shouldn't be bunching above the waist.

Hop27 · 16/05/2022 23:57

@LadyFlumpalot depends on what enclosure your in regarding how thin your straps can be on your dress - but it seems your encouraged to wear some type of headwear at all times 🫤

LadyFlumpalot · 16/05/2022 23:57

Fuck sake, Mumsnet, sort the app out?

Women are encouraged to wear "smart daywear"

Well, you've all convinced me. I've still got that patterned dress in my wardrobe so I'll check it still fits tomorrow, if it doesn't I'll look for something similar. Sigh. I wanted a floaty dress.

SEND IT BACK

it makes you look matronly & very wide hipped & much older. I thought you were older than me & yours actually miles younger!

the other two photos you look lovely. One of those or something similar!

have a great day!

(you won't be out of place in either of those other dresses, I see all sorts

LoveSpringDaffs · 17/05/2022 00:04

@LadyFlumpalot she doesn't look 'slight & ethereal' IMO. She looks like she's wearing a maternity nightdress! Whereas in your other dresses YOU look fabulous!!

BowerOfBramble · 17/05/2022 00:04

Have a look on Anthropologie, they’ve got some gorgeous summer stuff in

How do you all feel about this one?

Great

if you're Julie Andrews.

The dress is really pretty and so are you !
The only issues are with fit. The inset flared sections of the skirt are giving an illusion of your shape widening at that point, which it doesn’t. I think the net is not helping but really it is the gores. The bust section is too wide and not quite fitted enough. You would fit a more classic Grace Kelly fifties dress better, with fullness from the natural waist and a properly structured bodice.
What works on you is the deep v, and the shaped aspect of the bust, as you have narrow ribs and beautiful shoulders and arms. You do need to be quite covered for Ascot, so you can’t show off your shoulders in something strappy, but you could wear something very tailored, or something soft and floaty and more fragile looking.
Or get a tailor to tweak the fit of the bodice of this and take out the net.
I like the length, personally. I think it is elegant.

My friend wore the to the races and won fashion on the field. Not helpful because not a UK brand - but a stunning dress!

oviraptor21 · 17/05/2022 00:19

Out of interest, what is a build like a hedge sparrow??? Extremely short and round? Sorry, have no clue what you mean as that doesn't correlate to the pics

Sorry, that was something my mum used to say! Just meant that I am tiny-boned, delicate and all limbs, no torso. Thinking about it, you are right, it's an odd way of saying it!

Off topic - your mum is clearly no ornithologist 😂

Back on topic - PP are correct- the second clubbing dress is your best option so far.
However the shonajay dress above looks good and I'm sure you could get a more lacy version with your clubbing dress silhouette.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2022 00:24

I think a one shoulder / cape dress with a more bodycon fit would be more comfortable for you as it sounds like you aren't usually a 'flowy dress' person and it's horrible being at events feeling like you're not 'you'.

Completely agree the first look is ageing and unflattering - in reality absolutely gorgeous with a cracking figure!

How about any of the attached as you're in the less formal bit so the sleeve rule isn't an issue?

And for the love of god don't be tempted if someone tells you to 'throw on a pashmina' -I personally think it's a sure fire way to instantly date any outfit!

I would 100% recommend one of these dresses, i got one for a wedding and loved it, really flattering and they have some nice floaty ones

HolyHiVisOfStEvenEdge · 17/05/2022 00:29

You do need to be quite covered for Ascot, so you can’t show off your shoulders in something strappy

That only applies in the Royal Enclosure.

Indigoo03 · 17/05/2022 02:39

You look great in all your going out photos so I wouldn't worry too much! Half of the crowd will probably be dressed like that anyway.

LadyFlumpalot · 17/05/2022 08:18

Thank you all, I've given my head a wobble and will go for a more form fitted one. I've asked for the post with my put out pictures to be deleted as I left my face in one of them.

I'll probably go for the attached, which I already own and some of you saw upthread, which means I can free money up for some serious shoes (comfy, I know) and some extra bubbles on the day Grin

Thank you. ☺️

Dresses like the one in your OP have long had their day I think. They’ve been done to death and seem dated now. It fits well so if you love it wear it.
I prefer the one in your last link by far.

onlywork55 · 17/05/2022 09:32

Oooh I like the last dress you posted, it looks lovely on you.

easyday · 17/05/2022 09:41

My only hesitation is will you feel so self conscious during the day that you don't enjoy it? It is a bit shiny but I do like the style!

notawittyname1954 · 17/05/2022 10:00

you have a great figure and look lovely in that last dress which you already own
