Hullo, this dress is so far out of comfort zone it hurts. My usual style of dress is work pencil dress or cheapy sundress. Mostly I kick around in jeans and a T-shirt.

It for Ladies Day at Ascot. Intending to wear it with a pale silver/grey wrap and pale silver/grey barely there heeled sandals.

I'm not sure on it, I have the build of a hedge sparrow and I wonder if this makes me look a little like I'm playing dress up n a Disney Princess dress? It definitely needs a stitch at the bust and I'd obviously wear a different bra (this one is a very padded front close) so I wouldn't look as out of proportion booby.

Is there a reason you want a dress with a fuller skirt with netting? The second picture of you clubbing is a fantastic dress that suits you. Wouldn't something like that be a possibility?

Just because I've never had an excuse to wear a posh princess dress before and when I googled "Ladies day Ascot" it all seems to be dresses with full skirts. I thought that was the thing so I saw a pretty princess dress and went "oooooh"

I think the other dress you've posted is along similar lines, it might be a better length on you though. I would be tempted to avoid that 50's fit & flare shape and go for something more on trend. There are lot's of bias cut, ruffle edged dresses about recently which I think look fab if you've got the figure for them and you do!

thirstyformore · 16/05/2022 23:29

@LadyFlumpalot have a look at self portrait. I love the dresses. Something like this www.self-portrait.com/products/lace-trim-mini-dress

Or

www.self-portrait.com/products/pink-cotton-guipure-mini-dress

Or for a lower budget I like &other stories, whistles and mint velvet.

I have to agree that in the 1st dress, it makes you appear very pear shaped with wide hips and a much larger size than the pencil shaped dressed in the other pics- where you look about size 10 or less! If you do go with the 1st dress, having grey accessories would be too much. I'd choose a contrasting colour like a dusty pink.

Out of interest, what is a build like a hedge sparrow??? Extremely short and round? Sorry, have no clue what you mean as that doesn't correlate to the pics

Hop27 · 16/05/2022 23:31

It's a no for the 2nd one too.

How about something like this? Elegant and classic? (Ignore the price tag, will find something similar if you like the style)

Well I was surprised at the second set of photos because the first set makes you look really wide hipped and frumpy. Sorry but it doesn't suit you at all. The other photos show you looking amazing. I'd go for something more your usual style so you can feel lovely in it.

Sorry, that was something my mum used to say! Just meant that I am tiny-boned, delicate and all limbs, no torso. Thinking about it, you are right, it's an odd way of saying it!

I think the dress is perfect for the event. it looks very classy but if you want a less classy look ?

PuffItsGone · 16/05/2022 23:36

Have a look on pretty lavish, never fully dressed, hope and ivy

HolyHiVisOfStEvenEdge · 16/05/2022 23:36

When you said you had “the build of a hedge sparrow” and I looked at the first photo of you in the Ascot dress I honestly thought you must be deluded, it gives the impression you have middle-aged spread. Then I saw the further photos of you in your clubbing dress and you’re far too young and slim to wear that grey thing! I’m 50-mumble and no style icon and I still wouldn’t wear that.

I think something fitted in a bolder colour would suit you better, OP, and you could definitely carry it off.

This seems unnecessarily rude

GoBackToPartyCity · 16/05/2022 23:37

ASOS have a great occasion wear selection. There’s 20% off at the minute too.

Verite1 · 16/05/2022 23:38

OP - now I have seen you in your clubbing gear, it’s a no, no, no to that dress. Honestly - it makes you look at least 2 sizes bigger. You look great in more fitted styles, but do you want something with a bit of a flared skirt as it’s an occasion? The second self portrait dress was fab but too expensive. Maybe have a look on OUTNET?

Kastri · 16/05/2022 23:39

The patterned dress in your going out picture looks much nicer on you.You could easily wear that to Ascot,or something similar.

Verite1 · 16/05/2022 23:40

And what size are you? An 8?

LadyFlumpalot · 16/05/2022 23:41

8 on the top, 8/10 on the bottom these days!

I definitely think you should go for a more fitted dress, you have an amazing figure. I like Virgos lounge dresses for occasions like this xx

Iamthewombat · 16/05/2022 23:44

Don’t do it, babe! That grey dress is matronly.

MarmiteCoriander · 16/05/2022 23:47

@PuffItsGone - sorry, what exactly did you find incredibly rude about my post?

Staffy1 · 16/05/2022 23:47

It’s a nice dress and looks good on you.

LadyFlumpalot · 16/05/2022 23:50

See, why doesn't it look so wide on the model?!? We've got similar figures so why do I look like a reject from a pantomime and she looks all slight and ethereal?!?

@LadyFlumpalot so you want something romantic and flowing?
(Are you allowed bare arms at Ascot?)

RoseslnTheHospital · 16/05/2022 23:54

Perhaps the model is taller with a slightly longer torso? Also, there might be bulldog clips pulling it in at the back that aren't in the pictures!

BowerOfBramble · 16/05/2022 23:55

I agree! That’s what my lower half looks like in dresses and it’s a 14 and more rhino than sparrow.

I think something the same sort of shape as your going out clothes but longer would look awesome. Fancy doesn’t have to mean frilly.
