Help. Can you box dye over balayage??

Just had it done and absolutely hate it. Blonde highlights which were supposed to work with my natural brown town. Looks awful.
Can I box dye over it and if so which one?
feel like it is my fault as I’ve had such a stressful week and booked in haste. Maybe didn’t research it enough ☹️ Have a wedding at the end of the month.

Is it the colour or placement...or both you don't like? Picture?

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 12:52

Sorry not great as I am in the car.
But both. Was told the blonde would be more caramel tone and I don’t like these bits at the front as they look very ‘stunted’ and not gradual fade. Also I just wanted it on the ends.
If there are any hairdressers here I would appreciate your thoughts 😩

Hmm it does look a bit chunky, rather than blended, but I don't think it looks bad. Did you say how far up you wanted to go?

Obviously this wouldn't help with the placement, but you could have it re toned.

What's it like at the back?

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 13:25

She didn’t ask. Can I tone it myself? I can’t go back as it is an hour away ☹️ usually so good. She was late so I feel like it was rushed. Really sad as felt so crap lately and never spend £120 on myself

I reckon that could be fixed with a bit of a root melt at the front and then toned.

Please don't box dye straight over blonde unless you know what you are doing re colours otherwise you might find yourself in the horrible position of having brown/green hair.

I would call the salon and go back and get them to fix it, even if it's an hour away.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 13:29

I’m going away tomorrow so can’t get back there. It’s so bad. Back isn’t too bad

I actually think it's lovely.

Don't box dye over professional colour. It'll either go green or orange.

It looks better than you're thinking it does, honest.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 13:45

Can I tone it myself?? Honestly it’s ok elsewhere I don’t know she has done these chunks at the front

OP posts:
intheaviary · 12/05/2022 13:49

why she has done chunks at the front*
not keen on the colour aswell though

They're called the money piece. They all do them by default (no offence if you are a hairdresser and you don't!), they're trained to. It's meant to frame your face.

I would not put a box dye on it and drugstore toner won't do anything. It doesn't look how you wanted it but it doesn't look bad, honestly.

Suprima · 12/05/2022 14:02

It’s just a money piece. I have similar chunky bits at the front. It looks nice.

the first blonde highlights on brown hair do always feel a bit odd, but you could do with a bit more root melt. I’d take pictures and email the salon and ask for it to be amended when you return.

if you want to tone it yourself- purple shampoo. Sit with it on for about 15 minutes and comb through.

don’t put box dye on it, please

sjxoxo · 12/05/2022 14:03

I don’t think it’s bad! The only bit I think is not great is the lack of graduation at the top but the colour with your brown I think looks really nice!
if you’re going away somewhere sunny you could get one of those sun in sprays and use that on the ends - would lighten them up more and give you more graduation xox

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 14:45

I just bobbed into our local hairdresser and they said money piece too. I didn’t ask for that?? The picture I showed her is just the ends as well.
Thank you for reassurances but I honestly hate it and really want to cover it

All I can see is my blonde baby hairs 😢
is there a hairdresser who can advise how I can fix it myself before I go away tomorrow? I know it’s only hair but I’ve been feeling so rubbish lately and it’s really upset me

It's a bit chunky but honestly it looks nice! Please don't box dye over it, the chances it going green are quite high and then you will be even more upset!

You could try a toner, Shrine drops are quite good although don't last that long I don't think, but it's worth a try.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 17:12

Thank you @Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople. What will toner do? Sorry if it’s a daft question but I’ve never used it

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 12/05/2022 17:21

A silver toner will make the highlights less warm - although you said you wanted caramel highlights and a toner will make them less caramel than they are now. I think the colour is actually quite nice and suits the natural brown, it's more the placement. It's not 'balyage' that they have done, that is supposed to be more of a gradual fade into the root, there is a fairly clear line. But tbh, I would just leave it now, I wouldn't spend any more money if you don't want to go back to the original salon and get it fixed for free.

This is why I don't go to hairdressers anymore - at least if I fuck up my own hair, I haven't spent hundreds of pounds!

Afterfire · 12/05/2022 17:30

My dd used a dark brown box dye over hers and it did work - it covered it, but if you’re at all worried do a strand test first.

It looks more like standard highlights to me rather than bayalage but it does look okay, honest!

Takeitslow123 · 12/05/2022 17:31

I also think it looks nice. Always takes me a few days to get used to a haircut. Maybe colouring is the same?

EarringsandLipstick · 12/05/2022 17:39

I think it looks nice. I don't even think it looks chunky. The photos aren't great but honestly, it's fine. Maybe you'll like it more after a day or 2?

Please don't go near it with a box dye!

Evilista · 12/05/2022 17:45

I would get some colour effects wash in hair dye from Superdrug in a cool blonde 8.1

Invisimamma · 12/05/2022 17:45

It really doesn't look that bad. I've had a couple of bad balayage in my time and thinking of going back to highlights.

You could use those root touch up sprays as a temporary cover up.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 17:48

Yes this is what I thought too. I wanted it more gradual and it just looks like highlights. I used the word balayage from booking my appointment. Also this was the photo I showed.
Actual tears over this which is ridiculous, but just wanted to feel better about myself not worse
