Help. Can you box dye over balayage??

Just had it done and absolutely hate it. Blonde highlights which were supposed to work with my natural brown town. Looks awful.
Can I box dye over it and if so which one?
feel like it is my fault as I’ve had such a stressful week and booked in haste. Maybe didn’t research it enough ☹️ Have a wedding at the end of the month.

It isn't a beautiful balayage, the money price is a bit chunky and the colour is more yellow than blonde, but that wash in colour (toner by another name) should help it look nicer. You could also use shrine drops but a bit more expensive, I would go for the colour champagne. Won't be perfect colour wise as it's hard to match to a photo due to impact of lighting etc. But those are both lovely colours and neither ashy nor yellow

If you had time to go to a salon then a root smudge or balayage correction using low lights would work well, but obviously if you don't have time then the toner is the best thing for now.

It does look yellow 😞 honestly j think I’m going to just have to go over it and hope for the best. Maybe strand test like a pp has said.
Argh gutted I’ve ruined my natural colour

If you do go over it with a box dye, make sure you use a brown with red undertones in it, definitely don't go for anything with 'ash' in the name as that is more likely to go green (Ash has blue undertones and yellow + blue = green!)

cakebytheoceon · 12/05/2022 18:15

Do you feel comfortable with your hair up? Maybe rather than playing around with it you could wear it up while you're away then go back to the salon on return? X

JusticeForWanda · 12/05/2022 18:16

Please don’t box dye it. It’ll likely go green and then you’ll be looking at a lot of money in a hairdressers for colour correction and you really will have ruined your natural colour!

wash it and style it yourself with a vosene or t gel shampoo so you can see what it really looks like.

then if you’re still not happy with the yellowy colour, use toning drops. The mark hill ones from Superdrug are very good.

OnTheVurj · 12/05/2022 18:18

Peoplr always show those pictures of professionally waved hair with balayage to hairdressers. It always looks different on straight hair. Maybe it’s that?

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 18:23

I’ve asked hairdresser if I can box dye it and she said it should be fine?

OP posts:
TabithaTittlemouse · 12/05/2022 18:23

I had exactly the same issue @intheaviary .
I’ve had it done multiple times and loved it but last time it really went wrong.
I wondered about putting a red dye on top?

RoyKentsChestHair · 12/05/2022 18:31

I wouldn’t trust her! If you do use a a box dye just go for a semi permanent not a permanent one.

I’ve had some slightly over enthusiastic highlights before, with the obvious colour change like this. I found this Scott Cornwall Colour Restore... caramel shampoo/conditioner thingy that works really well, from Amazon.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 18:44

Oh god what do I do. Going after go on holiday like this and get it fixed when I get back (by somebody else). Really can’t afford it, that’s as an indulgence as it is 😞

OP posts:
TabithaTittlemouse · 12/05/2022 18:48

They should fix it for free as long as you don’t put another colour on it

ladydimitrescu · 12/05/2022 18:49

Ask them to correct it when your back - but it really isn't bad.

EarringsandLipstick · 12/05/2022 18:54

I don't know what you mean. It doesn't look yellow!

Your photos of it aren't amazing. But the actual balayage looks good.

I'm not sure how achievable your photo was in actuality with your hair.

I really, really wouldn't box dye it. It really looks fine.
I know you are not happy, and can't go back to your original hairdresser, but go when you can. Don't do anything rash.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 19:50

Thank you. I am going to leave it for now and tie it up 😞

OP posts:
Evilista · 12/05/2022 19:51

You can always use a purple shampoo or silver shampoo to reduce the yellow/brassiness

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 19:51

No holiday photos for me!

OP posts:
Mangofandangoo · 12/05/2022 19:52

Go back/elsewhere and ask for a root smudge to be pulled through - that'll sort it out. Been there op!

Evilista · 12/05/2022 19:52

If you don't like the front section twisting or plaiting it could make it look really lonely. Also if you curl it it breaks the lines up in highlights or balayage, it's why they usually don't photograph it straight

CraftyYankee · 12/05/2022 20:01

I had balayage done and after it was washed with a clarifying shampoo it all blended together. Maybe give that a try? The worst thing that would happen would be if it removes more color than you want, but since you dislike it that might be a win!

MaddieElla · 12/05/2022 20:11

Are people recommending box dye ever, or just because the OP has only just had it done?

I'm in a similar position and don't want to spend a fortune at the hairdressers any more. But it's been 8 weeks since it was coloured so I'm hoping I'll be fine with a box dye? (Hopes)

So sorry OP, I also wanted balayage and ended up with highlights from the root. 😔

MaddieElla · 12/05/2022 20:13

Recommending NOT to box dye ever, that was supposed to say.

An edit button would have been nice with the recent Mumsnet "upgrade".

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 20:14

I will if you will @MaddieElla 😆

can I buy clarifying shampoo over the counter @CraftyYankee?

OP don't make any hasty decisions while you're panicking. Sleep on it, contact the salon tomorrow, don't buy any products or touch it until then.

SunnyShiner · 12/05/2022 20:44

I would dye over it but I'm pretty reckless with my hair. It's more sensible to leave it alone.
