Help. Can you box dye over balayage??

Just had it done and absolutely hate it. Blonde highlights which were supposed to work with my natural brown town. Looks awful.
Can I box dye over it and if so which one?
feel like it is my fault as I’ve had such a stressful week and booked in haste. Maybe didn’t research it enough ☹️ Have a wedding at the end of the month.

Yes, you can buy lots of different clarifying shampoo at Boots, Superdrug etc. I use Detox Dynamo from Noughty because my hair is curly. It's just intended to remove product buildup from hair, but also removes some color when you've had it done.

What a fucking drama over something that doesn't even look that bad?!

Honestly if you box dye your hair you'll totally ruin it & it will be biggest waste of £120. It'll go green tinged and be far too dark and you'll hate it even more.

Stop panicking over something as stupid as your hair, sleep on it & see how you feel after you've washed and styled it yourself.

& take holiday photos - you'll kick yourself in years to come when you've no photo memories to look back on because you were too busy being vain and worrying about your hair!!

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 21:54

@GayParis are you my hairdresser?

I’ve used dye over bleached hair hundreds of times; it’ll be fine.

warofthemonstertrucks · 12/05/2022 22:23

It's looks nice to me tbh...I don't even think it looks chunky and the colour is good.

TunaSalad · 12/05/2022 22:29

I wouldn't box dye over it and then go on holiday all that sun and chlorine!

It looks nice as it is, certainly nothing to be anxious about, it doesn't stand out as a bad dye job.

Go on holiday, wear a hat or hair bands or cute plaits and see the hairdresser when you get back.

RudolfsLeftToe · 12/05/2022 22:30

First off I really like your hair but if you don’t that’s what matters. Are you going away somewhere sunny as that will brighten the highlights. I always hate my hair when it’s just been coloured but after a few washes they do blend in more and after some time in the sun I really like it. I love the look of beachy, grown out, less “done” balayage though.
If you don’t like the money piece then play around with your parting and a PP is right that balayage is rarely photographed on straight hair as it is designed to be curled so looks better that way.

intheaviary · 12/05/2022 22:42

Thanks all. May seem vain to some but I’ve felt really shit about myself lately due to no sleep and PND, so this was supposed to be confidence boost before our break. Will hold off dyeing and hope I feel better about it. Will book in elsewhere when I get back

I've box dyed over much more heavily highlighted hair than that and it's come out fine.

Bear in mind that it tends to come out darker than you expect it to!

intheaviary · 13/05/2022 08:46

Thank you @hupfpferd . Still hate it this morning. Tied up it looks almost grey. I have a video consultation with Josh Wood so will see what they say

@GayParis are you always such a bitch?

Wishiwaschilled · 13/05/2022 20:38

Op I hope you're ok and feeling better.

Your hair honestly looks absolutely fine. It's not the most stunning balayage but it certainly isn't awful by any means. Some good silver shampoo will sort out the tone. As others have said the blonde at the front are just the money piece.

Fwiw and for next time, it's worth doing a lot of research before having a balayage, checking out hairdressers work on Instagram and finding someone that you really trust. You'd need to find a very talented hairdresser to get the result in the photo you've posted. That photo the hair is curled which makes a difference too. Even with an amazing hairdresser it takes upkeep with toners and silver shampoo to keep it looking lovely.

Conniebanana · 13/05/2022 20:42

Honestly I think it looks lovely. Ok if not what you're expecting it's a disappointment but I'd be very wary of playing with it. I've put bud dye over growing out highlights and it's been horrid and I really regret it.

Comedycook · 13/05/2022 20:47

It looks fine...not the absolute best balayage I've ever seen but it's nice enough. Looks way better than a box dye would.

Mogloveseggs · 13/05/2022 20:59

Ah hope you're ok op. It looks absolutely fine to me but if you're not happy with it then that's fine too. Have a look at half up half down hair styles on Pinterest-some easy stuff to do that would look really nice and hide the part you're bothered about.
Hope you have a lovely holiday 💐

To be fair, I also thinks it looks shite (im genuinely so sorry for saying that). Nothing like what you wanted, it's not nice and golden or blended at all.

I'd understand if you didn't wanna go back to get it fixed either, plenty of times I've crossed the road straight to boots for a box.

Alarae · 13/05/2022 21:05

I hope you could find some last minute availability, I do think a decent root melt will give you the look you are after as I can see where they didn't do a fantastic job of blending at the front, even if they did go high.

I didn't see the example photo until just now but it does look like they have the high 'money piece' at the front, it's just a bit difficult to see at first. She really should have asked you about it though, I have had a few balayages done and they have always asked if I've wanted framing around the front.

Kitten2 · 13/05/2022 21:24

I think it looks nice and suits you.
It would never look like the model picture anyway, different hair style!?

The colour is nice and it certainly is better than an all over box dye. It's nice.. see how you feel when it's less fresh

intheaviary · 14/05/2022 00:51

Thanks for latest comments! Agree probably my fault a bit. Hairdresser said she asked if I wanted a ‘face frame’. I think I vaguely remember something about this but thought she was talking about the cut! But in any case it is not blended properly. The photos don’t really show how wonky/chunky they are.
Anyway, I am going back in the morning for a root blend and toner to make the blonde more golden (setting off a day late for my holiday! It’s not abroad). Will report back for anyone that cares 😊

I admit I've box dyed over a balayage before for similar reasons, OP. My hair was far too blonde and in the end I thought "fuck it!" and took a chance. It came out ok ( I did a semi-perm medium brown). No green or orange, though that's what I was expecting to happen!
