White trainers and maxi dresses...

...is this look still a thing? Or will I look like a bit of a dinosaur?

Dd turns 18 in a few months and we have a weekend away planned some of which will involve a lot of walking but still want to look a bit glam from the ankles up!

I'm mid/late 40s and considerably overweight (but working on it!) and having given up work 18 months ago to care for my Olds my wardrobe currently consists of uber smart office wear and heels or jeans, tatty tops and cheap pumps, so any additional fashion tips would be gratefully received!

These are the trainers I'm looking at btw...not normally a fan of obvious brands tbh but figure being leather that the Nike ones will last and can be cleaned more easily.

To be honest I’d steer away from that look, it such a uniform (though nothing wrong with it if you like it, of course). I’d go for a nice, not too fussy midi dress and flat chunky sandals. If you mean serious walking maybe some Teva sandals.

Sadnesser · 07/05/2022 08:20

I’ve still been wearing that 😳I’m 37 but not hugely fashion conscious. It was fab for running around after small kids but still looking nice. I hope it’s still a thing!!

AnnaMagnani · 07/05/2022 08:22

I am on holiday in Italy and although its a bit cold for us to really get going on trainers and maxi dresses it is totally still a look, especially if you are walking. To our surprise even the Italians seemed to have given up heels for comfort.

summerdrinks · 07/05/2022 08:24

If it's a city I would definitely be wearing trainers with a dress. Comfy sandals can work but I find in a city your feet get grubby really quickly. I did dress and trainers in London.

thethoughtfox · 07/05/2022 08:24

I see it everywhere. Try slimline ones like Superga or the ballerina type Converse.

onlywork55 · 07/05/2022 08:25

It’s probably not the height of fashion but it’s definitely still a look (mostly amongst mums in their 30s/40s!)

I like the trainers you posted.

Footgoose · 07/05/2022 08:25

It’s still a look where I live . If it goes out of fashion then I’m done for as it’s the only style that I can wear in the summer and not feel dreadful about myself. I’m overweight .
I would go less trainer on the shoe style tho and more pump if wearing with a dress Laceless looks great in my opinion. Mint Velvet do a great pump. I still turn up the ends of my skinny jeans to make myself feel a bit more summery so maybe you don’t want fashion advice from someone like me . 😀

These are very comfy if you'd like a slight twist on white trainers: www.toms.com/uk/alpargata/natural-crochet-womens-alpargata-slip-on/10016241.html

I was in London yesterday and lots of women were wearing that look. All ages and sizes. And I thought, they all look good. It works.

Neverendingdust · 07/05/2022 08:30

Personally not a fan especially as its a trend which can age someone fairly quickly, throw in a denim jacket et voila you may as well have put blue eye liner on and had a perm. The Maxi dress itself can be a knife-edge piece of clothing, the right one on the right age and shape can look amazing, that same dress in a bigger size on an older person doesn’t always seem to offer the same forgiving benefits.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 08:32

Haha...I'm no fashion guru! I like to look half decent but for the last couple of years my style has largely been 'harassed bag lady'!

We're going to be in London, so will be walking around shopping a lot but also going to nice restaurants and bars for meals so seems the most practical option, especially as we won't necessarily want/have time to go back to hotel and change on two of the three nights.

Will probably be maxi/trainers on 2 days and jeans on the other 2.

I work in London, it's a massive look there for a variety of ages. Londoners want comfy feet.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 08:34

@Neverendingdust oh blimey...I was thinking denim jacket on top as well 😖!

Mind you I lent it to my mum the other day and she looked pretty good in it at 83...

I'm bored of white trainers, and prefer midi to maxi generally. I'm sure it's not at all fashionable, but I'm enjoying wearing black/tan New Balance with dresses at the moment.

rookiemere · 07/05/2022 08:37

Rather than jeans which can be quite hot and sticky for walking around, I'd look for a pair of smartish linen trousers. White Stuff do some. That would smarten up your look as well.

I am a middle aged tubby person and I do have a lovely maxi dress but I'd tend to wear in more in the evenings with a pair of canvas pumps. There is a lot of material so for daytime it could be a bit shroudy and not that practical for walking around.

Phase Eight have a lot of nice bright linen clothes in at the minute, if I had some spare dosh I'd be looking in there.

YellowHpok · 07/05/2022 08:37

Some of the comments on here, honestly. OP is asking for help with a nice practical outfit, not a cutting edge wardrobe overhaul.

I think what you've picked sounds lovely OP. It's popular because it looks nice on all shapes and sizes, and is also very comfortable. Win win.

milkysmum · 07/05/2022 08:38

Well I love my maxi dresses, trainers and a denim jacket! I live in a little north Lancashire village and we are clearly not at the height of fashion here then!

Gherkingreen · 07/05/2022 08:41

My 'out' uniform (day or night) is maxi dress and white leather trainers and a denim jacket so am officially in 'dinosaur' territory; naturally curly hair but no blue eyeliner (lol pp).

I'm 5ft10 slimmish, maxi dresses suit me, I'm late 40s and choose comfort over anything.

actiongirl1978 · 07/05/2022 08:41

OP I have a lovely midi skirt to wear with puma white trainers and rather than denim jacket I wear a pale grey cashmere crew neck on top. The jumper came from ebay and offers spring/summer warmth without being too chunky and looks smart with nice jewellery too.

I go into London a lot and in tourist areas you will look perfectly acceptable. There is such a mix of styles.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 08:43

Thanks @YellowHpok

Tbf I did say any additional suggestions welcome...

I did however forget to mention that I'm a lazy mare and I like to travel light, so as much as I love linen and do have a few pairs of linen trousers...it would mean ironing whilst I'm away so...meh!

We're going end of September so unless we have a crazy Indian summer I don't suppose jeans will be too hot.

Tbh if I mentioned where the maxi dresses and jeans came from people would probablyhave coronaries and permanently ban me from the Style and Beauty section!

@Gherkingreen that's exactly how I feel, although sadly I'm 5'3 and bordering on spherical atm!

And peri menopause has stolen my natural curls...bastard!

If you are doing a lot of walking in a dress, make sure you wear cycling shorts underneath to avoided the dreaded chub rub (bitter voice of experience here!)

DurhamDurham · 07/05/2022 08:46

That's a massive generalisation, I sometimes wear maxi dresses and trainers to work, I occasionally throw on my denim jacket. I've never had a perm or blue eyeliner. Was into heavy rock music in the 80's/90's (I'm 51) and exclusively wore black, except for my foundation which was v v pale Grin

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 07/05/2022 08:46

I don't care about looking mega fashionable but would rather not see eye rolls from shop assistant when we're trawling all the trendy gaffs in Shoreditch and Spitalfields that DD wants to visit 😆.
