The Met Gala

Has anyone else seen the photos from last night? Wow!! Some of the dresses this year were just incredible! The craftsmanship that went into some of the dresses is mind boggling. My favourite had to be Blake Lively's dress that morphed into a completely different look. I thought both were stunning. There were so many other gorgeous gowns as well. I wasn't blown away by Kim K in Marilyn Monroe's $4.5m dress, but I give her points for even being allowed to wear it and get into it! Apparently she lost 16lbs in 3 weeks just to fit into it - (just! - I think it was a tad tight). The one I'm struggling with that everyone else seems to love is Billie Eilish's dress. Have I completely missed something here? I really think she looks dreadful in it. But then again I don't like her style in general and always think she looks bored as hell and half dead. Have I just missed seeing something with this look?

Wow nippy Jodie Turner-Smith is ridiculously beautiful, and her dress was gorgeous too.

I liked Shawn Mendez's outfit and Jared Leto with his "twin" was lots of fun.

The 'twin' is Alessandro Michele , the renowned creative director for Gucci.

@KimikosNightmare

I think unfortunately a billionaire with huge press presence at the moment would be 'higher' on the guest list (so sort of lead guest of a pair) than an entertainment icon like Glenn - which is one of the things that's so wrong about the social hierarchy at the Met Gala!

Well Glenn Close was also there

FIZZYTEDDY · 04/05/2022 09:16

@duvetdayforeveryone hahaha totally agree. Very 90s prom vibe as well

MangoLipstick · 04/05/2022 09:24

Blake Lively looked amazing. She was the stand out for me.

breadedchicken · 04/05/2022 10:03

@NippyWoowoo sounds like i need to watch more telly! Honestly thought he fell off the radar when Dawson's creek ended.

I think the whole thing is grotesque. Those women could barely stand unaided, let alone walk. KK tottering about, looking like her feet have been bound. Utterly gross. They mostly looked ridiculous.
As I get older I just think this stuff is obscene with the world being as it is.

It's an expression of art and creativity, which is an important and meaningful part of what it means to be human.

ImAvingOops · 04/05/2022 10:55

If you say so @Time40 . I'm not seeing the art in Kim Kardashian starving herself and tottering about in shoes she cannot walk in! To me it's more an excuse for people with too much money and privilege to parade in public.
Idk, in a week when America is on the verge of removing abortion rights and we may be heading for a Third World War, this just feels all wrong to me.

Time40 · 04/05/2022 10:56

I agree that Blake Lively's dress is the best one. It's gorgeous. Isn't she beautiful? Absolutely stunning.

I really like Billie's, and it was made with recycled materials, which is good. Jasmine Tookes wore my other favourite, a lovely, elegant dress in dark green sparkly fabric (I have no idea who she is; never heard of her before).

Gosh, there were some absolute horrors, though! What the hell was going on under Chloe Bailey's gold dress? It looked as if she was trying to smuggle giant melons in, strapped to her thighs. Nicky Minaj's dress was a severe wardrobe malfunction teetering on the edge of happening.

I want Emma Corrin's black pointy boots, and Jessica Chastain's purple turban with the rhinestones. I really, really, really want them!

I have used far too much of my morning on this ... but it's been fun. Has anyone seen the documentary film about Anna Wintour and the Met Gala? I think it's called The First Monday in May ... very interesting, and well worth seeing.

Time40 · 04/05/2022 11:04

They are different things, and have no relationship to each other. The Met Gala isn't the cause of the threat to abortion rights, or the danger of a world war. In the case of abortion rights, you would do better to look at why the extreme right has gained power in America in recent years.

The two things don't have to be directly connected for an event to feel tone deaf in the current climate.
With the event itself, what I especially didn't like was how uncomfortable many of the women looked. They were wearing costumes that completely inhibited their ability to move and shoes that looked painful and made them hobble. What was with Cara Delvigne(?)and all the gold paint? She looked so ill at ease.
And boasting about starving themselves to lose 16lb in 3 weeks. This isn't art to me, just a grotesque display of ostentatious wealth, when there are cost of living crises and millions of people losing their homes (and countries).

I get that there will always be incredibly rich people, but I think the time has come to stop flaunting it quite so much.

Grumpysister · 04/05/2022 11:34

The historic costume world (niche I know) is setting Twitter alight about KK wearing Marilyn’s dress.
Lots of issues - the perceived unimportance of historic costume as opposed to other types of artefact (possibly because of feminine links), the threat of rich/powerful using other museum artefacts for self promotion, as well as the actual threat to such an important dress of someone who still doesn’t fit it despite unhealthy crash dieting (see picture) and can’t walk in it. Interesting stuff (or I think it is!).

ImAvingOops · 04/05/2022 11:54

I do wonder why kk was allowed to borrow it. Clothes are fragile and really it ought to be kept in a museum and preserved properly.

Tirediam · 04/05/2022 11:58

Kylie Jenner looked AWFUL. What was she thinking?!?!

queenofarles · 04/05/2022 11:59

but no one forced them to attend though? ,
they knew by wearing the most OTT thing would get them a noticed,
the most beautiful on theme looks didn’t even get a proper mentioning,
I personally think the model
Adut akechwore wins she wore most beautiful gown , and Shalom Harlow too, they looked stunning

queenofarles · 04/05/2022 12:01

*Adut akech,
sorry for typos

LadyDanburysHat · 04/05/2022 12:05

Agree with everyone that Blake Lively looked incredible.

I don't think Kim K looked great in the Marilyn dress, and her hair colour and styling was awful.

Kylie and Kourtney both completely missed the theme and looked dreadful.

Jared Leto looked amazing as did Joshua Jackson.

Gwen Stefani completely missed the boat with that neon dress. It would have been great for a modern awards show, but was wrong for that night.

MarshaBradyo · 04/05/2022 12:07

The Kim K dress did nothing for me and I felt underwhelmed by the Monroe connection

But maybe all the hype just falls flat these days

Figgygal · 04/05/2022 12:09

I loved Jessica Chastain's look
Actually on theme
No idea who many of them were or how they got invited

Time40 · 04/05/2022 12:09

She borrowed it? Really? That seems an unwise thing to do with such an historic dress, if it's true. I assumed she'd bought it for millions.

Time40 · 04/05/2022 12:12

That photo of KK with her bum poking out of the dress ... apart from looking awful, they had to open up the seam ... what a thing to do to that dress! I'm shocked.

I missed this. Are you sure it was the real dress? KK had an exact replica of the dress made, which she changed into pretty much as soon as she got up the stairs. The replica for her much better in the boobs.

Kim Kardashian in Marilyn's dress - It was indeed the real dress, borrowed from Ripley's Believe it or Not in Florida (who bought it for millions a number of years ago). They originally said no to her borrowing it but changed there minds when she approached them again. She was only allowed to wear it for her entrance and was in a replica once she got off the red carpet.
I'm generally in agreement that she shouldn't have been allowed to borrow it. It should be on display only.

Badger1970 · 04/05/2022 13:25

Blake Lively nailed it completely. And Dakota Johnson.
