How much do you pay for your highlights/ cut?

I'm Home Counties and got a 'top' salon in a middle class market town (can't think of a better description.)

A half-head of highlights is around £95, and a cut/ wash/dry is £75-ish.
This is with a long-term snr stylist.

I used to manage a whole year between highlights (I'm a mousy blonde, used to be more auburn blonde.)

Now, my hair is 50% grey and I find the parting area shows the grey in a few weeks. I've also swapped to a slightly warmer blonde highlights, as the pale gold were washing me out.

so with a bit of help from a colour wand (powder) I can only go 3- 4 months between cut/ colour.

I've never spent this on my hair EVER.

So it's working out at close to £200 every 3-4 months.

£67, half head of highlights, cut and olaplex. Winning!

Same OP. Following.

£105 for half head highlights, cut and blow dry. I use a mobile hairdresser who worked in the top salons before she had children.

Flyinggeese1234 · 31/03/2022 12:59

OP and others who have grey coming through, do you have foils for the lengths but then root touch up (painted on in between, where could don’t reach)?

This is what I have.

So, root touch up only, then next appointment roots and foils, alternating like that.

Maybe every third time a cut too. Oh and for the foils appointment a toner too.

Costs a bomb. Need to reduce the cost. Getting silly and unsustainable.

Flyinggeese1234 · 31/03/2022 12:59

Should say ‘where foils don’t reach’.

Beamur · 31/03/2022 13:48

My highlights are done to minimise the grey so I don't do anything between the times I have it coloured, which is every 4-6 months. It grows out and looks quite natural. But the tones change a bit - looks warmer when the colour is done and ashier with the grey

I have foils the length of the hair (sometimes I get away with the T zone only- straight down my parting about 20 foils which is cheaper than a half head.

I don't think for me a root touch up would work, as it would be solid colour and my hair is practically 3 shades !

1 My own colour which is darkish blonde (golden, verging on red underneath.)
2 My grey - light/ silver
3 My dyed colour which is a slightly deeper tone of my original colour.

If you have root touch up only @Flyinggeese1234 do you not end up with solid colour down your parting, rather than a highlighted look?

How do you avoid a line of solid colour along the roots?
Is this an option?

Please tell!

You sound like me, but the problem I'm having is for the last 2 lots of foils I've gone for a slightly darker shade of goldy blonde, so my roots are showing (in contrast) more than they did before.

Hiya @SusieAndTheBannedShes right OK, my hair is coloured to my (non grey parts!) natural colour, then only a few lighter pieces which don’t start at the root, they’re from about ear level down, so root touch up actually is the same colour as most of my hair anyway. Will try and post a pic.

I found with foils only they can only get so close to the root, there’s always a few mm the foils just can’t reach, hence having the in between areas painted in,

Flyinggeese1234 · 31/03/2022 14:27

Having said that, regrowth shows after about 4 weeks still, so I just touch up with Colour Wow powder to tide me over. Absolute costly farce.

Thinking of going lighter all over so at least regrowth is less stark.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/03/2022 14:30

About £110 - I don't have highlights I have full red colour on my brown hair

Needcoffeeimmediatley · 31/03/2022 15:11

Buckinghamshire
£85 for 3 colours (highlights and lowlights)
Cut and blow dry

Gonnagetgoing · 31/03/2022 15:43

Half a head is £85 or a bit upwards which for Kent/borders of SE London is cheap. Can be £90 to £100 upwards elsewhere.

£75 for a cut and blowdry is way too much I think but now I've checked price list it depends who I use.

I usually go every 8-10/12 weeks for half head highlights.

LolaLoo2 · 31/03/2022 15:44

Last time I went I got full head highlights with cut & blow dry and it cost me around £80.

LaWench · 31/03/2022 15:48

My stylist does me a deal as I go every 3 weeks for root colour and blow-dry, this is £30. I had a load of highlights scattered throughout last time alongside the roots and blow-dry. She charged £66. She's amazing, always been reasonable prices.

Madre123 · 31/03/2022 15:49

In between 45-60 every 4 weeks

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 31/03/2022 15:50

London zone 2. She does quite a lot of fashion & celeb hair & is very good at colour (less so cut!).
She comes to my house and charges £160 for full highlights, cut and blow dry.

Starwind74 · 31/03/2022 15:55

Half head of foils, cut and blow dry £93. South East England ( not London). My hair is quite short though And I am a regular customer.

yellowsuninthesky · 31/03/2022 16:09

I pay about £45 for a cut and about £80 for a half head of highlights.

There is no way I could do it myself. If I fell on hard times I'd just have to go less often and find somewhere cheaper.

SommerTen · 31/03/2022 16:57

In an expensive south coast of England town. My next appointment will be Full head of highlights approx £87, cut n blow dry £44 plus extra if I need toner or treatment but I usually don't.
I get my hair cut roughly every 16 weeks (long curly ish hair) & highlighted (usually half head £75, twice yearly approx full head) every 8- 9 weeks.
I only get a blow dry when I've had it cut as a blow dry is an extra £27 with just highlights.

It is expensive.., but I cant drive & can't drink alcohol for example so I'm saving money there.

I'd rather eat value beans on toast than give up getting my hair done at a salon! Lockdown was a nightmare!

Flyinggeese1234 · 31/03/2022 17:01

@SusieAndTheBannedShes to show how my lighter tones start lower down so any root touch up just blends with the darker part at the top (for about 4 weeks), then I go to touch up powder. Then invariably start to ponder how to go lighter near the roots for next time.

How much do you pay for your highlights/ cut?
Franklin12 · 31/03/2022 17:05

These threads all most always desend into 'I cut my own hair and box dye it and people often think its done professionally'. 99% of the time it really doesnt look professional (IMHO of course!). If it was that easy then hairdressers would no longer be required.

That and DH does it...

I dont colour my hair because there is no grey so a cut and blow at £65 every couple of months.

Its rather like those threads that claim they never iron anything and no one ever notices....
