How many clothes do you buy a year?

PersonaNonGarter · 30/03/2022 22:07

Just wondering how many items people buy a year? Not including underwear but including pjs and gym kit and shoes.

I buy in splurges rather than regularly and I think it is something like an item a month but I am also sure I am lying to myself that it is only 12 items a year…Grin

Like, just roughly.

perhaps an item a month but barely that.
I hate buying clothes, although I love window shopping and browsing online.
I'm more confident buying trainers, boots and bags. I do need to buy some smart navy trousers tho. my current ones are in terrible condition.

My DP asked the other day where all my clothes are. I don't have much at all.

I've subconsciously decided that keeping Grey hairs coloured is more important.

Egghead68 · 31/03/2022 09:18

Last year I bought 2 dresses, 2 jumpers, a pack of knickers and a pair of slippers and I got 3 packs of socks and a pair of trainers as presents

garlicandsapphires · 31/03/2022 09:24

About 15 roughly.
I read, think on this board, about a model who limits herself to just 5 things per year. One for every season plus one extra. I’d like to do that. I only buy from eBay and have had to buy extra recently because I’ve put on weight.

WinterCarlisle · 31/03/2022 09:38

I buy quite a lot but almost everything is second hand apart from underwear and some shoes. I love charity shops and ‘preloved’ sites. I also sell things I’m bored with on the same sites. I like clothes but I certainly don’t like fast fashion and I’m on a budget. This way I don’t feel too guilty! Things I love and suit me I’ll wear for years. One of my favourite tops pre dates my husband and teenagers Grin

Gonnagetgoing · 31/03/2022 10:15

Far too much. I'm trying to get myself out of doing it and buying more if I need things rather than want them.

Lockdown helped because I couldn't get to shops but I did order online and kept some stuff which I then couldn't or didn't return.

PersonaNonGarter · 31/03/2022 10:38

5 items only per year?! I spill coffee on more than that.

Having said that, during the pandemic I found that I hardly ‘wore through’ anything. But jeans I need to buy at least once a year. And slippers. That’s 2/5 already.

I lost three stone last year so went a bit nuts..pretty much all on ebay...although I've fallen in love with Uniqlo jeggings. I have way too many clothes and few places to wear them. I mostly go to gigs and wear jenas and t-shirts.
My dream life needs to adjust to my real life.

Wagsandclaws · 31/03/2022 10:59

Too many, I mean far too many.

I lost six stone and bought an entire new wardrobe ( shoes and boots included ) and I just don't seem to be able to stop myself still.

I have I have four double wardrobes in a dressing room and another rail on top too, it's too much to be honest as I love clothes so, so much but even I'm thinking it's excessive.

Clothes, shoes, handbags and beauty are my 'hobby' albeit an expensive one 😳

PlainJaneEyre · 31/03/2022 11:09

I ordered 8 things last night as I have a holiday coming up - two are underwear. Since the start of the year I have bought 10 other things mostly for the Summer. I'm sure I have forgotten some. This is me choosing sensibly now. I buy new and either resell stuff or donate to charity. I tend to buy ahead of season or in sales.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 31/03/2022 11:10

Way, way too much
I have probably 10 pairs of trainers in circulation and another 8 waiting to be worn (2 purchased this month). Plus boots (1 pair purchased this month) and sandals etc.
This month I've bought two new gym tops and one set of bottoms, a body suit, shorts, smart top, 2 x dresses, trousers, a t-shirt and a pack of basic knickers. And I was feeling that I'd been quite restrained...

I think I've lost countGrin I'm constantly buying new clothes, it makes me feel good and more confident!

I must admit I do buy more than I probably should because of course it does add up but I would say roughly 50 items a year maybe more!

1frenchfoodie · 31/03/2022 13:50

Pre Vinted about 10, not counting socks/underwear, a bit less over the Covid lockdowns. Then I discovered Vinted and went to about 10 a month, need to rein that in…

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 31/03/2022 15:31

@Marther4 I'm like you. I love keeping up with fresh new styles. I invest in quite a few pieces each season, but I wouldn't consider them overly trendy so I do wear them long after I initially purchase. I've also lost a significant amount of weight in the past year, so needed to replace all my jeans.

I've been on a bit of a splurge the past 2 weeks and wanted to update my wardrobe with some new styles.

I've purchased the below in the past couple weeks. Will probably my hold off for a couple months now (*she says...)

Good American long wide leg jeans
3 pairs Zara jeans in various styles
Me+Em maxi dress
Black tie gown

2 evening clutch bags
Zara dress (2nd hand)
Borgo de Nor dress (2nd hand)
Me+Em jumper (2nd hand)
Reiss blouse (2nd hand)
Mango trench
Zara quilted coat
Cream platform sandals
Pink low heels
Nude camisole
2 pairs earrings

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/03/2022 15:48

Probably one thing a month on average, but I buy most pre owned on eBay.
Have bought 2 packs of knickers( obv new) and old ones are now cleaning cloths!
I enjoy wearing all I have now

TheChosenTwo · 31/03/2022 16:13

Oh I honestly don’t know, I don’t buy things regularly but when I do make a spend it’s usually 3/4 items at once.
I bought a light spring jacket the other day and a dress I’d been eyeing up a few weeks before that.
I shop almost exclusively online and hate, utterly hate clothes shopping. Skincare and makeup shopping on the other hand… Grin

FayCarew · 31/03/2022 17:01

Lots and lots and lots

BodgertheJogger · 31/03/2022 17:48

Loads, facilitated by Vinted.

Alwayscheerful · 31/03/2022 19:23

Pre pandemic, I probably bought 25/30 items including boots, costs, jackets, shoes, handbags trainers and sportswear , actually maybe more like 30/35 thinking about it.
Less than 6 during the pandemic and I no longer shop for pleasure. I only buy what I need.

Ponks · 31/03/2022 21:08

I've kept a record of my purchases over the last 5 years and it's generally circa 25 items a year. It's interesting to go back and see what were good purchases and what ended up less worn. Feel I make fewer mistakes these days.

DSGR · 31/03/2022 21:33

3-5 items a month. I love clothes

nordica · 31/03/2022 21:36

I think I've bought 6 this month alone. Generally too many, although it is one of the few things I spend money on so I tell myself it's ok... (although I do feel environmental guilt.)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/03/2022 21:38

As little as I can get away with as I hare shopping. Typically, in a year, 1 pair of jeans, 2 tops, a jumper or cardigan, and a couple of pairs of pjs.

If I attend a wedding/christening I rewear something if I can. Purely as I hate shopping.

If someone could just keep my wardrobe topped up with nice clothes that fit me perfectly in styles I like, I'd buy way more.

lightand · 31/03/2022 21:43

8?
Thought I was being quite unique, but see there are others on here doing the same.
I havent changed weight much in years. Plus I used to have my sister's clothes she didnt want. But she has finished work now, so I cant have as many. Moved onto using one of my daughter's, unwanted clothes instead Grin

Bought two pairs of trousers new today as it happens. 1 pair of jeans. And 1 pair of new "spring" trousers. Plus a cheap top. That is spring done.
