How many clothes do you buy a year?

Just wondering how many items people buy a year? Not including underwear but including pjs and gym kit and shoes.

I buy in splurges rather than regularly and I think it is something like an item a month but I am also sure I am lying to myself that it is only 12 items a year…Grin

I have a “one in, one out” policy. So, most winters I buy two new jumpers and get rid of two worn out things. I usually buy 3-4 Breton-type tops to replace worn out ones.

I have sadly gained too much weight, so recently bought four new outfits for work in one shop. Will need to buy four more spring/summer outfits soon.

JurassicPerks · 31/03/2022 21:45

I generally wear through a pair of trainers and work shoes a year.
Probably 2 pairs of jeans.
I pair of work trousers.
A couple of teeshirts and a jumper.
Maybe 12 things total, but generally replacing things that have worn out.

Cbes · 31/03/2022 21:50

Honestly, probably 100, if not more.

I’ll tend to by in splurges, and from the same retailer. So I might order e.g. winter sale 10 things from Boden in the sale, 10 from M&S, 10 from Lewis’s, and then if I like the cut of a particular item I might buy another in a different colour. Then mid season a couple of things from each in the new season ranges.

I shop when I’m bored or stressed.

MrsSpooner · 31/03/2022 22:08

Loads
But I buy from charity shops & Vinted and sell stuff on. My wardrobe is a constantly moving cycle ….

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 31/03/2022 22:28

About 4 things a month, if you're including things like pjs and sports clothes. But I keep them ages, and very rarely buy anything that doesn't get years of regular use.

user1487194234 · 31/03/2022 22:29

Spend about £200 a month

tigerbear · 31/03/2022 22:33

@1frenchfoodie same!!!
I used to buy loads of new stuff anyway, but since discovering Vinted, have been buying so many things each month.
I try to justify it by selling as much old stuff as possible, then using the credit to buy more, so feels like it’s for free.
I bought 7 coats in the last 2 months 😬

SmithfamilyRobinson · 31/03/2022 22:40

M&S 2 pairs jeans
John Lewis Reiss T shirt, belt
Primark 1 pair thermal tights
TK MAXX pj bottoms
Charity shop Reiss dress (doesn't fit Hmm)
Random shop in Berlin - scarf
Swimming costume
Makes 9 so far. 1st April tomorrow will order next ration of 3 - does matching belt and handbag count as one 🤔

deadlanguage · 31/03/2022 22:45

I don’t buy stuff every month but when I do buy stuff it tends to be a few things at once. But I don’t think it would average to more than 1 thing a month - of the things I keep. I order loads and then send most of it back.

JaceLancs · 01/04/2022 00:04

All the time!
I get bored very easily and my weight fluctuates
I buy mostly from charity shops and in sales or from outlets and eBay when I’ve had enough of things
This week I’ve bought a new dress, blouse for work and a swimming costume

PersonaNonGarter · 01/04/2022 00:07

Wow @Cbes where do you store it all? 100 items must take some organising.

I’ve never even looked on Vinted - sounds like it should stay that way…

@Ponks - I am inspired by you keeping a record of everything you buy. I might try that. Has it been useful?

Ponks · 01/04/2022 07:41

@PersonaNonGarter I keep a record on Pinterest and yes I do find it helpful- both in reminding me what I have and it has encouraged me to think more about what I'm buying, as I know it will go on my board. I try now only to buy and keep items that I really like, rather than making do. Doesn't mean they are expensive, I buy mainly in sales.

waterlego · 01/04/2022 07:47

I haven’t bought anything yet this year and can’t think of anything I need. I probably buy 0-5 items a year. I rarely go anywhere that requires me to look smart so I mostly wear gym kit, leggings and hoodies, and pyjamas.

Enzbear · 01/04/2022 10:03

Depends on what I actually need (replacements) and what I fancy.
Probably buy several items each season, so about 20/30 things a year.

LutzClutz · 01/04/2022 10:38

So far this year...
A pair of shorts
2 dresses
A summer vest top
Skirt
Tunic type thing
3 jumpers
Denim jacket
A bra

All from January sales, Vinted and charity shops. Total spend, around £220

I think this will be it for the year, unless we have to go back to the office in which case I will need some more work stuff.

Purpleavocado · 01/04/2022 10:41

Way too many. I've put myself on Project333 for the next 3 months, and plan to stick to it for at least a few cycles. Might have to buy a few things for Summer but then that should be it for at least a year.

Gonnagetgoing · 01/04/2022 10:57

Just as an aside. I've got two very close friends who I know don't spend lots on clothes. One is overweight (size 16?) but carries lots of weight around her middle and though she likes shopping she feels self conscious about it, she does have nice clothes. The other is also overweight but much taller (5 ft 8 or 9) and she's not into shopping but does have some nice clothes.

Then there's my SIL (DB's wife) - she hates clothes shopping but does like clothes but with a 3.5 year old finds it tricky. She also has to stay modern/smart/relevant for her job. Her own SIL (her DB's wife) loves shopping but is picky or used to be about clothes and styles. But she easily rocks certain Zara looks.

hippospot · 01/04/2022 11:00

About 20 items a year including footwear and gym gear but not including underwear/tights/swimwear.

I generally replace items that have worn out. I keep things for a long time usually and my size hasn't changed.

BlingLoving · 01/04/2022 11:06

I used to shop more when money was less tight but one thing that a few very very tight years taught me was how much happier I am when I think about what I buy or only buy things I love because broadly, my clothes tend to last.

Since I started with Stitchfix I buy more. I get a box every 3 months and usually keep at least 2 pieces, sometimes 3. I don't buy a LOT outside of that. Eg in the last few months I've bought a new top and a couple of cheap t-shirts as mine are all stained. I also bought a few dresses last year as I was shopping for a specific event and in the process bought the event dress, a different smart dress which I LOVE but couldn't wear for that event, and two cheap and cheerful dresses that turned out not to be appropriate for the event but good for my real life! Grin. That's unusual though.

I'm always amazed by people buying 2-3 pairs of jeans a year. I currently have 2 pairs of jeans and a pair of cords. The cords were purchased via Stitchfix, one pair of jeans last summer and the other pair at the start of lockdown. How do you get through so many jeans in a year?

CoastalWave · 01/04/2022 11:13

I bought 5 items yesterday. First time I've bought anything in 2 years.

I really don't have many clothes at all. They wear out rather than go out of fashion.

JurassicPerks · 01/04/2022 11:43

bling if I'm not at work, I wear jeans. I have 3 pairs in total. I wear them through at the top of my thighs. I sent a pair back to M&S when that happened after 8 weeks.... I expect to get about 6 months wear from a pair.

This year I've already bought:
Coat
3x jumpers
1x vest
Sandals
Sunglasses(was feeling optimistic earlier this week)
1 x dress
1 x swimsuit
So.. probably quite a lot!

Trumpton · 01/04/2022 11:59

I kept a record last year January to January and bought 20 items I was surprised it was that many!
But included gym wear and trainers as I got fit after double mastectomy and chemo.
I must do this year as well.
I also do the one in one out policy and have to think what I will charity shop before I buy new ( or eBay)

Trumpton · 01/04/2022 12:04

So far this year 2 dresses ( one to replace a favourite that had worn out and I was lucky enough to find bnwt on eBay) , 1pair wide legged trousers for a wedding, I pair gym jogging bottoms, 1 gym t shirt.
