Joules yellow 'mum' coat

I bought the joules yellow 'mum' coat a few years ago- you know the one. I really don't want to wear it this spring but it is so practical. Waterproof but not sweaty, not too hot, decent pockets, casual to wear with jeans, bright colour so easily found in a crowd (unless there are several people wearing the same coat!)

What else would be a good replacement?

I bought a used yellow joules coat from a colleague, but never wore it after hubby and teen boys said I looked like Georgie from 'It'. 😂 Sold it on vinted for more than a paid for it!

I’ve just bought this jacket - it’s waterproof/wind proof, but not padded so doesn’t get sweaty at all. And doesn’t rustle or look too much like I should be hiking!

@Mistressiggi

When I was a young thing a coat was basically for life, not just for a year or two.
My 'big' coat is from Etam

I dont think they have existed for about 20 years and the coat is much older than that!!!

Have a look at Rains, Stutterheim, Sweaty Betty, Lululemon for raincoats.

LazyDoll · 21/03/2022 21:07

Triplechoc that’s basically the Joules coat in navy.

@SheeceRearsmith

I too have a yellow mum coat (Regatta) and my kids call me Mummy Big Banana whenever I wear it. Ah well.
@SheeceRearsmith I have this one and I get called 'a weather man' Grin

I lived in Germany as a toddler and every DC wore a bright yellow rain coat so I see it as a giant toddler waterproof coat rather than a Mum coat. So always looks bizarre on an adult in my mind

I sort of think I want this coat, as it’s bright and cheerful……..
Then I saw a woman in her 80’s wearing it in a cafe…….

I know this makes me a terrible person!

I got this one from Cotton Traders in January and it’s really lovely. Stood up to the late winter, early spring weather really well.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/03/2022 00:10

I also had this coat about 4 or 5 years ago. Sold it on eBay once I realised that everyone else had the same one 😂. I too need a good replacement!

@OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree - Hilarious. Oddly enough your user name very accurately describes my every day attire!

AgathaX · 23/03/2022 09:39

I have one of the yellow raincoats. I actually love it for dog walking in spring/summer but wouldn't wear it for anything else now. Too many around.
Lotsofpots what's the sizing like on the Stutterheim coats? I can see they're s, m, l etc sizes. Do you know what these roughly equate too?

lecreusetpeppermill · 23/03/2022 09:42

I bought myself a nice, sturdy, william morris umbrella and dome umbrella as i have had enough of the shape and style of ALL raincoats.

I used to live in the lake district and once you do it for long enough, it really really gets you down. I hate the standard length of them (never long enough, often hip length so legs still get drenched) and the ubiquitous bloody colours. My life was just day after day raincoats for over 5 years Grin

Now i like a floaty 90's style cardi, loose jeans, a dress, etc. I wont go back i wont go back, noooooooooOO!

lecreusetpeppermill · 23/03/2022 09:46

I also toss on a rucksack or cross body bag for carrying stuff and use the pockets of a different jacket or cardi for my bits and bobs.

I honestly had to wean myself off the damn things, slowly. They take over your soul.

Pinktruffle · 23/03/2022 10:36

I have the Barbour Oak coat which is my 'mum's coat. It's lightweight but warm, completely wind and waterproof, I can't pretend its overly stylish but it doesn't look terrible either.

Dresslover1950s · 23/03/2022 10:40

Boden I’ve got the paintbox one lovely and a Barbour both will last years

superdupertruper · 23/03/2022 10:55

I absolutely second Stutterheim. The tote bag in particular is great for the beach.

Thoosa · 23/03/2022 11:00

I dunno. I think I nice practical waterproof coat for child wrangling and (dog) walking in all weathers exists slightly outside of “fashion” and can’t see anything offensive about the seasalt/joules/fat face type ones. They do the job, they’re pretty pleasant to look at and they’re practical. They don’t need to win style awards any more than wellies do.

fortheloveofcheesecake · 23/03/2022 11:19

I've had my yellow mum coat 6 years now...actually I have two! One in a size 12 and one in a size 16 depending on what size I am that spring!!

Thoosa · 23/03/2022 11:20

I wouldn’t pair one with a Breton, though. That’s just wilful conformity.

WannabeGilmoreGirl · 23/03/2022 11:31

I replaced it with the navy one 🤫
