Joules yellow 'mum' coat

Clarabellawilliamson · 19/03/2022 17:47

I bought the joules yellow 'mum' coat a few years ago- you know the one. I really don't want to wear it this spring but it is so practical. Waterproof but not sweaty, not too hot, decent pockets, casual to wear with jeans, bright colour so easily found in a crowd (unless there are several people wearing the same coat!)

What else would be a good replacement?

I used to have this. I remember being in a Waitrose with my first baby and saw two other mums in the exact same jacket and another mum in a similar yellow one. We all caught each other’s eye.

I eBayed it as it wasn’t really long enough and got a navy Barbour.

Troublesometooth · 19/03/2022 21:33

I have it too!

I’ve just replaced it with a teal lighthouse one.

ohfook · 19/03/2022 21:42

I call mine my national trust coat 😆. That coat, jeans and a Breton top is pretty much the uniform at my local NT place.

EllaPaella · 19/03/2022 21:45

You're gonna replace a Joules coat with a Fatface one??!

Wiredforsound · 19/03/2022 21:48

I have it too! I don’t really like it but I keep wearing it.

thenightsky · 19/03/2022 21:52

Has it worn out? I only replace coats when they are buggered.

DuggeeHugPlease · 19/03/2022 21:52

I don't think I belong on these boards as I quite like joules. Don't have the yellow coat though!

PeachesInTheOffice · 19/03/2022 21:55

I love Joules, not all of the flowery things but the stripy ones and the coats, wellies and kids stuff.

LittleWins · 19/03/2022 22:10

I have a dark green waterproof jacket from Hunter via ASOS & get lots of compliments. It has vents so not at all sweaty :)

I love this jacket from Marks and Spencer the other day as I had a sparks offer for 10% off so it was less than £40. I used to own a pink Joules coat like the one you mentioned eventually the zip broke but I loved it. It's hard to find the perfect jacket.

This looks ok maybe?

I’ve got the yellow coat too. I’m not giving mine up. It’s practical, it keeps me dry, it brightens up a rainy day and I can be seen when I’m crossing the road. There’s nothing wrong with it either so has a few more years in it yet.

Justkeeppedaling · 19/03/2022 22:41

I have this coat too Blush
I bought it on a whim while on hols in Cornwall. I'd never noticed anyone wearing it before that, but the next day I wore it to go to Helligan gardens and every other woman was wearing the same bloody coat. It's so yellow it really stands out.
I still like it though and it's worn well.
I call it my Keeping Faith coat, as Eve Myles wore it in the TV programme of that name.

Sailorsusan · 19/03/2022 22:46

I have one too! I plan to keep mine til it is next in fashion, it is such lovely quality and on some days it is perfect. Mostly though I wear a Trespass navy knee-length rain coat.

Mistressiggi · 19/03/2022 22:47

The Fatface one is more expensive, if you are comparing them less favourably!
BillyAndTheSillies · 19/03/2022 22:50

DH called mine my "NCT Squadron Leader" coat. Similar to a PP I just thought it was a rite of passage as a Mum. It does the trick, I lost weight and now my mum wears it.
This winter I've just worn an oversized trench and a baseball cap if it rains.

caprimoon · 19/03/2022 23:36

I've just remembered I've got this:

As recommended on MN last year Wink now I just need to dig it out.

BellatrixOnABadDay · 20/03/2022 08:05

I've just bought this from M&S and am really pleased with it:

Lotsofpots · 20/03/2022 08:13

Stutterheim do the best raincoats I've ever found. Miles better than protected species. Big hoods and pockets, brilliantly waterproof, loads of colour choices, look cool rather than mumsy.

But they're £££, so I got mine on eBay.

annlee3817 · 20/03/2022 08:28

Regatta so some really nice ones like the joules ones but I think better fitting, I have the joules one and it doesn't really have much shape to it, where as my Mum's red regatta one is lovely, similar to this www.studio.co.uk/shop/womens/coats---jackets/jackets/regatta-bayarma-navy-waterproof-jacket-12-06381766?source=TK4S&utm_campaign=PLA%20%7C%20Recruitment%20%7C%20Fashion%20-%20Womens%20%7C%20TK4S&gclid=CjwKCAjwoduRBhA4EiwACL5RP92hTAa0XQfaW41YjPCaBFW1RsBXLSQTQGBvTWxsfZ-xYA4qBVVF6hoClI8QAvD_BwE

This is a good point.

Why all this chasing about desperately trying not to look like everyone else while we all shop in the same places. You have a coat that does what it needs to. Unless this is about fashion versus practicality?

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 20/03/2022 08:59

I remember buying the joules one when I was in post natal fog. To be fair, it does its job, water proof, great pockets. But it makes me look potato shaped and even shorter than I already am (as a fat 5ft 2 I need nothing that makes me look shorter and wider than I already am)
Replaced with a trespass parka which has a waist, I'm still lovely and dry and can fit everything in my pockets, but I no longer look like a buoy bobbing in the sea. I'm no more fashionable, but I feel better.

Wagsandclaws · 20/03/2022 09:13

I've just bought a pink version of the Mum coat from m and s.

It'll do for school runs Ect but it's not the most stylish.

Norma27 · 20/03/2022 09:20

I ordered one from eBay yesterday. I’m going to see everybody else in one now aren’t I 🤣🤣

Justkeeppedaling · 20/03/2022 10:23

I suspect we all wear the same clothes more often than we think. It's just that this coat is yellow and really stands out in a crowd.
