Hello, I bought this Ghost dress on Vinted to wear to a wedding. I've not worn a dress for a few years, and I've put on a bit of weight (and had two children) - and I just don't know what suits me any more.

I'm a size 12/14 and 5ft11. The dress is a large, do you think it's too big? It was a bargain, and I do love the fabric so I was considering having it taken in. Do you think that would work? Or is the shape just wrong?

Thank you!

It's a lovely dress. Would it work with a belt if you want a bit more structure? Although I quite like the slightly oversized/flowy look so I'm not sure I'd bother.

DoubleChinWoes2 · 12/03/2022 16:31

I think it looks really nice. Looks like it fits from the photos

JofraArchersFastestBall · 12/03/2022 16:31

Please excuse the state of my bedroom - I really should have made the bed properly Blush

Here's a better view of the top part.

It looks fine to me , no need to take in.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/03/2022 16:33

It looks quite casual. Can you maybe iron it and try it with heels - might give a better feel for if it could work.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 12/03/2022 16:35

Thanks everyone - that's reassuring. Perhaps it's just a different style to what I'm used to.

Do you think I could wear it with flat shoes for a wedding? What would you recommend?

I don't think it fits you very well or is flattering to your good figure. Sorry.

balalake · 12/03/2022 16:36

It's lovely and suitable for a wedding in my opinion.

EricScrantona · 12/03/2022 16:39

I think you should get it taken in. It's a little baggy at the waist but it is a lovely dress and fits well otherwise. You have a lovely figure.

Shaambaalaa · 12/03/2022 16:41

I think you have a great figure - this dress is very mumsy and doesn’t make the most of it at all.

user1471447924 · 12/03/2022 16:42

I think you can find a nicer dress, it’s just a bit meh.

I love the fabric. You suggested you could have it taken in. I personally would do that. You have a great figure!

as far as shoes..Whatever you choose would work with this dress. I love it. You could wear heels at the wedding and flats at the reception. You have a good time! Cake

Aquamarine1029 · 12/03/2022 16:45

You can do much, much better. It doesn't flatter your lovely figure at all. It also looks quite casual.

KimikosNightmare · 12/03/2022 16:48

It's nice. You could wear it with flat shoes. It desperately needs ironing to the point I'd be slightly worried that someone washed or dry cleaned it incorrectly and has damaged the fabric.

It's very casual. I wear similar as everyday around the house dresses but it's still a nice dress.
HermioneWeasley · 12/03/2022 16:52

It’s a bit casual and baggy. I’m sure you can do better

JofraArchersFastestBall · 12/03/2022 16:55

Mixed opinions! I think I might take it to an alterations place I've used before and see what they say. It's the extra fabric under my arms that's bothering me.

Even if it's a bit casual it might be nice with sandals for summer? I love midi/long dresses on other people but have never felt quite comfortable in them myself for some reason.

The dress looks lovely on you and I totally get that dresses might be a bit out of your comfort zone, but it would look fab as a day dress with trainers…I think like others say you could have something with a bit more vavavoom

I think it's a very nice dress. I don't think it needs to be taken in and it's perfectly suitable for a wedding. You could go more va va voom but unless it's a high society glam fest wedding, it's fine.( But do try ironing it)
LairyMcClairy · 12/03/2022 17:01

It’s perfectly acceptable for a wedding after an iron. I don’t love the puffy sleeves and I think you’ve got a great figure that would look more balanced in a higher neck dress with a column type skirt (sorry not described well!).

Mischance · 12/03/2022 17:02

I think it is smashing and you look great in it!

JofraArchersFastestBall · 12/03/2022 17:03

I never iron anything (perhaps that's why I always look awkward in dresses!) I'll get the iron out and see what I can do Grin

ChickenStripper · 12/03/2022 17:05

It's an everyday dress not a wedding dress.

Rainraingoaway21 · 12/03/2022 17:09

I think it would look great with sandals or trainers as a more casual look. I wouldn't wear this to a wedding personally but depends on the type of wedding I guess. I can't imagine flats working well as it would look even more casual.

Lovely dress though and looks great on you!

B0J0ker · 12/03/2022 17:16

I think it looks nice as it is, but would look even better if you had it taken in to fit your arms/bust. The extra underarm material makes it less flattering. I think a dressmaker would 'lift' it at the shoulders which would take up some underarm excess and also get the bust part on your bust. My mum used to alter a lot of dresses in this way for me, made them look a hundred times better.

Regarding ironing, you'll need to be really careful and patient with it - I'd be cautious and would place a thin, damp cloth over each part and 'press' rather than iron it.

Shoes - I think it'd look amazing with some heeled Mary-Janes, kind of 1940s style and a bit glam, (maybe in the reddy-brown spot colour. Try Ruby Shoes or Vinted, Ebay etc). However as you're also lovely and tall and slim flats would also work if you don't get on with heels.

You've got a lovely figure - I think a Medium in this dress would have been a perfect fit, and the Large is just that tiny bit big.

Really hope you're pleased when it's all sorted and you enjoy the wedding!
