Osprey london bag - what would you think? Silent judging.

Am looking at buying a couple of bags - small cross body and a larger hobo.

Very slow fashion here, when I do buy it will be with me till it falls apart. I'm not bothered about a label for a labels sake.
But I work in a very judgy industry where sometimes I'll be required to go to an actual meeting with strangers ( I love zoom) and I don't want them giving my choice of bag the side eye.
So stuff has to be under the radar but awesome or no obvious label or acceptable to those who judge.

I was attracted to Osprey london , well the sale, but then the sheer number of discount shops has made me question the brand.

Don't hold back bitches, what would you silently think, or could you even tell, if you spotted an Osprey bag at the meeting room.

I'd judge you if you had an Osprey bag- I'd think you have great taste and I certainly don't see them as 'cheap' or anything (I say whilst looking at my FiorelliHmm).

ExConstance · 15/02/2022 16:26

If I saw you with an Osprey bag I would think you cared nothing for animal welfare. I always have a vegan bag as no one needs a leather bag. If you had a Mulberry bag in addition I'd think you had more money than sense. I don't say this to be difficult or unkind, I say it because for everyone who admires an expensive leather bag there will be people like me who will have similar thoughts to mine. Most of the people I come across who have large incomes carry a cheap rucksack or chuck everything in a carrier bag. The only real "legend" I know, who works in advertising uses an old Tesco carrier bag and sticks everything important in their phone case in a jacket pocket.

I'm into minimal and buying British and I really need a new bag soonish so I was thinking of one of these, in green because it's different:
www.glencroftcountrywear.co.uk/product/8-inch-crossbody-saddle-bag-real-leather/
Or this in loden/lime or maybe purple, just because I love purple
www.janehopkinsonbags.co.uk/across-body-bags/177-charlotte-across-body-leather-bag/614-charlotte-loden-leather-across-body-bag

But probably neither are the sort of thing you're looking at (I'm totally not into 'labels')

I have a few leather bags from Dunmore Scotland which is a little Scottish brand. They have this cross body in leather - I’ve not got this one but all my other bags from them are exceptionally well made.

As someone said further up the thread, I really like supporting little British brands.

Cstring · 15/02/2022 16:49

My Osprey leather bag didn’t last 12 months. The handles snapped, I was disappointed as it was a present and I did like it (even though I’m just learning through this thread it may have been naff).

Nopeihavenoidea · 15/02/2022 16:56

@YoshimisMum, @microbius @russiandwarf

I have bought 2 bags and a purse - I am trying to stop online shopping - if blame you all 😂

OOh wow I love this and in green too, thank you !
lucythejuicy · 15/02/2022 17:47

I buy top designer bags and work in fashion. I don't have more money than sense - I have enough money to buy what I want. I wouldn't think twice about your bag to be honest. If you looked stylish and it looked good I would think she looks nice. A nice coat says more than the bag imo - and the shoes 😀

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 15/02/2022 17:51

@ariela - and on sale too! I’m sorely tempted myself 🤣

Vegan = plastic = unsustainable and bad environmentally.
elbea · 15/02/2022 18:06

@XingMing I don’t think so, I am 30 and my 18 year old cousin thinks I am so old and unfashionable with my side parted hair and floral midi dresses. Different generations generally have different collective tastes.

I’m sure you don’t wear the clothes your mum thought we’re fashionable!

Rainbowshit · 15/02/2022 18:19

Yeah don't buy osprey.I was going to suggest sophie Hulme, but see she has closed her website as she is suffering from Ehlers-Danlos. Sad

Some available on vestiaire though.

Ohyesiam · 15/02/2022 18:27

Makes me want to buy an Osprey bag just to give the sad judges suckers a purpose in life

evilharpy · 15/02/2022 18:40

I really want to know what other handbags appear in the meeting room!

saddowizca · 15/02/2022 18:40

I'm wary of joining in, as most of my bags are these but if I had the moolah, I would go for APC as others have said. Ally Capellino used to be very popular and my old Freitag bag gets admired by my trendy young colleagues last week. Not sure if these are any use?

@Nopeihavenoidea 🤣🤣 Sorry! I'm supposed to be having a lean month on the credit card this month so I hear you!

saddowizca · 15/02/2022 19:05

@ChiefInspectorParker

I like Ally Capellino too but last time I looked I didn’t see anything I really coveted.

Having looked at Elvis and Kresse I really don’t like them.

Yes, there's not much on their website that I liked either - thankfully :)
mrwalkensir · 15/02/2022 19:16

Blondie Mania? Bought one at the Malvern show, then another the next year.

quite a few on ebay by the way :)

hadwebutworldenoughandtime · 15/02/2022 19:21

You could have a look on etsy. Some great looking leather bags. Big advantage is that it's unlikely anyone would know where it was from.

MargosKaftan · 15/02/2022 19:30

@ExConstance - that's interesting. Because the woman i know who live locally in £2m+ houses all carry designer bags. In my previous job when I met a lot of people who had NED roles on various company boards, the woman all carried leather (or good fake leather), discreet designer bags, usually large enough to carry an A4 file/pad in them.

Supermarket carrier bags would look like an affectation from someone senior in most industries - and looking like you are trying to make a statement that you are above such things always looks like you are the opposite.

OP - I dont think I'd judge you for osprey, but the quality doesn't seem worth the price. You'd be better going M&S or John Lewis own brand. Go plain.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 15/02/2022 19:36

@Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid. I buy stuff because I like it and if it suits my tastes. If people judge me because of my choice of handbag then I wouldn’t care less. How shallow can you get? It sounds exhausting.
I agree with this. And also I don't really understand the concern. So the OP's colleague notice her Osprey bag, and judge her, then what? Does something else happen as a result? Something bad? I'm obviously missing something as I don't understand why you'd worry about colleagues judging your handbag.
