Lip fillers

Sorry if this has been done to death before! I'm new to this section.

I'm 40 and considering getting lip fillers. I'm generally against any work to my face apart from eyebrow definition but would love my top lip to look a bit fuller. However I'm so wary of ending up with an irreversible trout pout!!

Also scared of what's in the stuff Confused and what I'd be injecting my body with (whether it's harmful long term).

Has anyone got any positive/negative experiences to help me make a decision?

Thanks x

Thanks for the kind words, you are right - I do need to look after them more, I have a baby to look after so I'm always neglecting my skin care routine! 😬

@user1495223711 you are right, and your post has almost single handedly put me off fillers. Thank you for taking the time to post that.

I have a baby (+ 2 older ones) too so I get it. But I carve out time for myself because I'm not getting any younger and with that and the whole sleep deprivation thing I can't get away with the bare minimum quick blob of Nivea soft these days. Proper AM and PM skincare routine. Nivea in-shower body moisturiser. Lip balm and hand cream every night. And tanning drops so I don't look dead. Have also perfected a 5-minute makeup routine for days when I want to wear it. I don't think fillers are the answer for you. I just think you need to force yourself into new habits that are quick and easy (and realistic!)

Don’t do it. They invariably look terrible. And more than that, why can’t we accept what we’ve been given. I just cannot get on board with this ‘trend’ at all especially when it involves younger and younger women feeling pressure to look a single, certain way.

Tippexy · 12/02/2022 12:53

You can always, always tell. Your own lips are perfect. Do not ruin them!

oneproudmumma · 12/02/2022 12:55

@FreshFaceTime I have two older DC too Smile and to be fair I do cleanse my face and moisturise twice a day... it's always my lips and hands that suffer! I put lip balm and hand cream on morning and night but neglect them throughout the day.. and the nappy changing has wrecked my hands as it did when my older two DC were babes.

So true. I think we are shown so many faces and bodies on TV and in magazines that have had work done that it has blurred what "normal" natural ageing actually looks like.

Try udderly smooth for the hands! It's the only thing that cured my chapped, cracked hands. Have a read of the reviews on Amazon if you need convincing! Xx

Thank you - I'm going off the idea now!! There are so many people on here saying it's obvious and you can always tell 😨 I'm more of a nude face and eyeliner kind of person.. I rarely bother with much make up: some tinted moisturiser if we are going somewhere nice, so I am wary of the fact fillers might look really noticeable on me...

@FreshFaceTime I will order some tonight, thanks - although DH will probably moan it's the same as the udder cream we bought last month but twice the price 🤣 xx

I am 41. My lips had started to lose colour and definition. I looked at lip filler but when I went to an experienced doctor they told me that my answer was semi perm lip tattoo. They could have easily taken my money but didn’t. I went ahead with it and it’s made a massive difference. Looking at your lips maybe this would be something that you would benefit from? The result is that look very natural but more defined. I think lip filler often ends up looking unnatural.

@Pacifica44 that does sound like a great option. I haven't seen many beauticians offering lip tattoos in our town but I'll have a look round.

These are my lips at the moment. Ignore horrible spots on either side 🥴 No idea where they sprouted from!
You have fantastic naturally “big” lips already with a really good natural colour. You have very few ageing lines. From a purely clinical opinion (dentist) your lips do not need enhancing. Lip fillers will stretch the skin and make them paler. Repeated use can make them a bit lumpy. I see lots of lips that have been filled and long term they don’t look good. I also know a lot of HCP are no longer offering lip fillers because of increasing cases of litigation from patients who are unhappy with long term effects.

If it’s from the MooGoo range it’s fantastic. I bought some to use after radiotherapy but now use it on my hands and face. I use the Restore. It’s also fantastic for post radiation skin, the equivalent of mega sunburn. I didn’t experience any skin dryness or peeling, which is common after radio.
Onceuponadimebar · 12/02/2022 13:27

@MintyGreenDream I think they are subtle and look lovely.

Somuchtogive · 12/02/2022 13:28

Interesting thread. I am nearly 60 and my lips were so thin that they disappeared altogether when I smiled. They’ve never been particularly full, but this was bothering me and definitely ageing! I went to a reputable clinic in December to see what the options were, and they said fillers. I bit the proverbial bullet and went ahead. I’m pleased. Had minimum amount possible. I think it was a bit obvious for the first month as it kind of changes the profile and I had a bit of bruising for a week or so (masks helped!), but now they’ve settled down nicely. So I think they have their place BUT …

I am a bit concerned about what a pp said about the dissolving filler kind of appearing elsewhere and I also accept the points about having to have them redone.

I did ask about tattooing so am interested in what @Pacifica44 says. The clinic I went to said that would only work if I wanted my lips to constantly appear as if I was wearing lipstick (NO!), but I might look into that again because an experienced medical tattoo professional should be able to match the natural colour of the lips, no?

Pacifica44 · 12/02/2022 13:37

@5128gap thank you

@Somuchtogive where I went the goal is natural. She looks at your skin tone and then matches a shade that looks like it is yours. The result is you look like you have natural defined lips. You need to go back every 18 months for a touch up but that only takes an hour. I think it’s a good option for loss of colour and the definition of my lips makes them look bigger than they did in the past.

Did it hurt?

Pacifica44 · 12/02/2022 13:45

@5128gap there is a numbing cream but I am not going to lie… it does hurt 😳

Yeah. I thought it might.

harriethoyle · 12/02/2022 13:55

@oneproudmumma as you can see from the thread photos its REALLY obvious when someone's had lip fillers and it's not a good look. On the other hand @Pacifica44 your lips look amazing and so natural. Definitely look into the tattooing op

wtfwasthatmate · 12/02/2022 14:15

Op try some zinc and vitamin b, possibly have your iron checked too, it may be causing the cracking on your lips.

These are really interesting points. Very glad I started this thread as to be honest, many of you have pointed out things I hadn't even considered past "will they look natural?" and "is the filler harmful?" It's been eye opening reading about how fillers can go lumpy and change lip colour and long term effects.

Thanks, I'm eight weeks postpartum and was borderline anaemic towards end of pregnancy. I'd hope my iron levels are back to normal now! I'm taking the pregnacare new mum supplements too x
