Are wool coats totally out of fashion at the moment?

Looked around me today and it dawned on me that I am the only woman I seem to see who wears a wool (I guess sort of 'smart') winter coat now - absolutely everyone else I see is wearing a parka or puffa (mostly the latter). I'm just asking out of curiosity - I love my coat, I'm not ditching it - am I very out of style? I sort of thought a wool coat was a classic that couldn't go in or out but am I wrong?

@ClaudiusTheGod

I see a lot of tailored wool coats in the City, on women of all ages.
I don't work in a city or live near one, which is why I very rarely see anyone in a smart wool coat.
Gonnagetgoing · 02/02/2022 10:32

I've got a wool sort of cocoon shaped rust orange colour Cos coat that I bought about 3 years ago that I wear.

The very slim ones I wouldn't wear.

Pigtailsandall · 02/02/2022 10:42

I have a tailored black wool coat from Me + Em which I love. It's got a slightly boxy, masculine fit which I think keeps the look current. I think a wool coat is a classic and you can dress it down with a beanie or trainers. I work in London so definitely see a lot of wool coats, but they are maybe less feminine than before. Also bright colours seem dated - I have a pink wool coat from 2015 which looks more dated than my black one

apinions · 02/02/2022 10:42

I almost think the opposite. If I'm wearing casual clothes such as jeans, chunky boots, trainers it feels more current to wear a wool coat with it, although does need to have a slightly oversized fit. Maybe it feels a bit more dated to wear a wool coat with a smart outfit/heels etc.

Wool coats will never go out of fashion, not really. I agree they are not around as much, but that’s because we’re going to offices/theatres/nice lunches less

Daenerys77 · 02/02/2022 11:02

I love my double breasted wool coat with velvet collar and cuffs and would rather wear a bin bag than a puffa coat.

BangingOn · 02/02/2022 11:03

I still love a wool coat and have noticed people wearing them casually with wide legged trousers, hoodie and trainers which I like.

I bought this wool coat in the sale and have been wearing it constantly, whether the rest of me is smart or not:

Bowlofhotslop · 02/02/2022 11:19

Camel coats are definitely still in fashion with casual or smart outfits. I wore mine (in a rural area Shock) today and felt very put together amongst the sea of leggings and puffers at school.

ClaudiusTheGod · 02/02/2022 11:49

@RampantIvy yes, I live in a small town and have a long commute to the City. At home, everyone here is in parkas and puffa jackets. Or neither of those things because they drive everywhere….

schmalex · 02/02/2022 14:04

I have a lovely forest green wool coat that I got from Whistles a couple of years ago. I love it and have had compliments on it recently (maybe because everyone else is in puffers!)
I'm over the whole lounging around in sportswear thing.

Geamhradh · 02/02/2022 15:12

Where I am (not UK) the trend seems reversed. A few years ago everyone was wearing puffa coats/jackets, me included. Now everyone seems to be in a smart wool coat with the puffa types coming out if it rains. I wonder if it's due to two years of not "dressing up" and the WFH, and now people want to look "smart" again. It's that for me I think.

ballroompink · 02/02/2022 19:54

I wear my wool wrap coat from Max & Co a lot! Bought it last winter. I also have a Hobbs one from 2014 which does look a bit dated right now - it's structured and double breasted - but I don't dislike it. I'm not keen on puffa jackets and dress quite smartly. If I'm dressed more casually I will wear my Seasalt waterproof.

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/02/2022 07:28

I’ve started to wear wool coats recently, I love them, they polish off an outfit.

I feel the cold though, if it’s freezing I wear a faux fur coat/jacket or my green velvet Whistles puffa.

@OneFootintheRave

Talking of classic wool coats, anyone know where I could find something very similar to this is style and colour? Grin
Hobbs have some coats similar to that. I found a gorgeous plum Hobbs coat in TK Maxx just before Christmas and stupidly didn't buy it.
Doremisofarsogood · 03/02/2022 10:20

I r cently bought a wool coat from eBay and I love it! I call it my carpet coat 🤣 Have had lots of compliments but I really couldn't give a shit what anyone thinks or whether it's in fashion! If you like it, wear it!

HPLikecraft · 03/02/2022 10:43

I only wear parkas, raincoats or, if it's totally Baltic, something padded to walk the dog in.

Any other time I go out I wear a 'proper' smart coat. I've got loads of different colours and styles, in cashmere, wool, velvet, corduroy. I like military styles and nice buttons. I have an oversized extra long black cashmere mix coat that covers everything and gets lots of compliments. I couldn't give a hoot how 'in' or not they are. I'd feel scruffy and not like me if I wore a more casual coat.

I get them all 2nd hand on eBay!

RampantIvy · 03/02/2022 11:09

What size is your wardrobe @HPLikecraft? 😁

designedtolast · 03/02/2022 11:44

A lot of shops sell wool coats all different styles and colours. I don't think it's out of fashion at all although I live in the capital. I have a parka but I use it for shops, park and on days I don't feel like dressing up. I love how Carolyn Martens (Fiona Shaw) is styled in killing eve with the collar up and I see plenty of women wearing wool coats in London so I'm assuming people have more reasons to wear them now since we aren't in lockdown

HPLikecraft · 03/02/2022 11:54

@RampantIvy I've had three DC leave home, so I've been moving into empty wardrobe space!
Bad idea, really.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2022 12:09

A lot of shops sell wool coats all different styles and colours.

I found it really difficult to find a wool coat in November. All my usual go to shops have either closed down or only had parka style coats. As I rarely wear a smart wool coat I wasn't prepared to spend over £100 on one. Judging from the comments on here I think I wasn't the only one with this problem.

I won't buy online as I have very long arms and need to try everything on.

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/02/2022 16:24
That's gorgeous @KimDeals

... loads of people agreed with me so it wasn't that weird, but cheers for your input!

I just walked past a Jigsaw store in north London and they had a nice selection of wool coats in their window. I still love mine!
