Are wool coats totally out of fashion at the moment?

Looked around me today and it dawned on me that I am the only woman I seem to see who wears a wool (I guess sort of 'smart') winter coat now - absolutely everyone else I see is wearing a parka or puffa (mostly the latter). I'm just asking out of curiosity - I love my coat, I'm not ditching it - am I very out of style? I sort of thought a wool coat was a classic that couldn't go in or out but am I wrong?

I think those puffa jackets are so ubiquitous they’re totally naff now. I go for style over fashion anyway so it’s smart coats all the way for me.

I have four coats on the go. A very warm puffa for the school run when it's very cold, a thin joules rain coat for nipping to the shops, a padded waterproof thinsulate one for the school run and a coatigan for work which is smarter, not covered in toddler Welly prints and I love wearing. It's not wool (it was only £50) but the same style. It's belted so I feel like a 1950s film star with an actual waist rather than a mum!

I bought a Hobbs navy wool pea coat from a charity shop the other week - it’s very classic in style, but I’ve been constantly in a puffa jacket and I’ve realised that wearing it all the time just makes me feel (and look) yuck. The wool coat looks so much better (I think!) and lifts jeans instantly. 😊

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 01/02/2022 06:56

I have both. Long Puffa comes out when it’s really cold or wet and my wool coat get worn when dryer.

I prefer my wool coat and my faux fur coat tbh, but there not always the best coat to be worn in winter.

I've worn wool / tweed coats more these last two winters. When I used to leave the house before 8am and not get back till after 6, I'd normally go for something weatherproof with a hood 'just in case'. Now I'm still mostly working from home and trips out are shorter so I choose wool more often.

HardbackWriter · 01/02/2022 10:36

Ok, definitely is a thing then! I'm just not very into a very casual look (I am maybe the UK's only 34 year old mum who doesn't wear trainers when not exercising, or at least it feels that way) and I also have a bit of a sensory thing about coats - I don't actually like wearing them at all, but really can't stand the feeling of a really bulky one, even if it's light, so a puffer coat is really uncomfortable to me. I will keep flying the wool coat flag, unfashionable as it may be!

All my winter coats are wool, I can’t stand puffers. They make everyone look like a michelin man, and I hate the weird sensation of heat and stifling stuffiness with no weight.

I've been looking for a decent wool coat/pea coat style jacket for years, you just can't find them any more. With a lining. So many are "coatigans" ie with no lining and no shape. YUK. It's so frustrating. I have a puffa out of necessity but I really want a cute staple wool coat for spring/autumn. I'd appreciate any links anyone may share.

xfgdhfgnhkk007 · 01/02/2022 11:19

Oh, and with a PROPER collar. It seems every coat has a "funnel neck" these days. Whoever thought that was a good idea? I frickin HATE funnel necks!!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/02/2022 11:56

I read somewhere that sales of “smart” coats reached an all time low last year because no-one was really going anywhere…

I have a calf-length boiled wool coat which I really love, but it is an oversized cocoon style so looks good with casual clothes.

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 01/02/2022 12:47

I find wool coats too cold now I'm used to my big, long puffa coats (Lands End mainly). I love the look of wool coats but they are not worth the suffering in cold weather!

RampantIvy · 01/02/2022 12:49

I agree that wool coats aren't anything like as warm as parka style coats. I got mine from Decathlon because I wanted something that was warm and waterproof because it rains a lot where I live, and I can't be doing with umbrellas.

PattyPan · 01/02/2022 12:51

I wish they were, I want a double breasted coat made of anything else as I’m allergic to wool and it’s impossible to find!

LemonMuffins · 01/02/2022 12:54

I had to buy a disgusting puffa jacket because I couldn't find a proper coat.

There were lots of oversized, shapeless, hanging wool coats. Also plenty with no buttons Confused

So I have a warm but ugly puffa jacket. I want a normal coat.

RampantIvy · 01/02/2022 12:59

If anyone has a Boundary Mills near them it is worth looking there. That is where I bought mine from.

HardbackWriter · 01/02/2022 13:00

I'm surprised that so many people aren't warm enough in wool coats - I find mine nice and cosy. But I live in the south east and we've had a very mild winter so far - I actually didn't bother with a coat at all on this morning's nursery run; it's 13 degrees here right now.

Isn’t it just part of the shift to more casual dressing because a lot of people are mainly wfh? I wear a tailored coat when I go to the office (unless it’s raining).

I have to say I think a lot of the long duvet coats look ridiculous but I can see they just be lovely and warm.

RampantIvy · 01/02/2022 14:50

I'm on the edge of the Pennines. While it is less cold today it is blowing a hooley outside, and my wool coat isn't that warm. Although I did wear it into town this morning. We had frosts last week.

MadeinSW3 · 01/02/2022 16:40

Lots of nice ones on Hobbs.

I wear a long wool one or a blazer style wool in the week and Michelin man puffer at the weekend for the park and traipsing around food shopping etc.

Calm33 · 01/02/2022 18:13

Its hunting out the 90%+ wool content in the coat! Most so called wool coats have 50% or even less and at the same price.

I have a puffer coat which I now wear for walks in the countryside or when its teaming with rain. This winter I purchased another wool coat 100% wool, bright and cheerful to wear even when I pop to the shops, it just makes me feel wonderful and smart without doing too much!

RampantIvy · 01/02/2022 18:20

True. My "wool" coat is 63% wool, 3% cashmere and 35% other fibres.

RampantIvy · 01/02/2022 18:22

I can add up Grin
62% wool

Butterismylife · 01/02/2022 19:53

I love them, and don’t think they are dated at all!
What dates something is how it’s worn, more than the item itself, unless that item is very unusual and trend focused.

I have a very long swishy wool coat in navy, I wear it with docs and a rucksack Grin, I prefer a sort of Helena bonham carter type untidiness, or like withnail from ‘Withnail and I’.

On the ‘dated’ argument, one might say the ubiquitousness of the puffer will date badly, but I do admit they’re toasty, although I see them as practical rather than enjoyable to wear.

Hard to find real wool though. And when you do you’ll pay for it! I have a tweed long coat fromToast yrs ago, which is 100% wool and extremely warm. Other than that I wear a short, barbour quilted jacket when it’s warmer. That all of my coats.

I lived in Cumbria for e few years, moved further south last year. so nowadays I can’t stand rain related stuff so shudder at the memories of my boring, hip hugging pink puffer and north face.

Butterismylife · 01/02/2022 19:57

Add me to the list of those wearing wool coats casually.
Not sure why it hAs that association - like skirts and dresses, I also wear them very casually and rarely look dressed up or smart.
I just swishing Grin

Seeing dresses or natural fibres in coats as ‘dressy’,seems a bit old fashioned to me. Like the person making that judgement is stuck in 1980.
