I'm 54, haggard, and currently have quite long hair. I stopped colouring years ago so have white streaks, scattered grey but still brown/golden brown underneath.
I let it grow for the lockdown years just to see if it would (never had really long hair) but now it just hangs there!
The pic is right now.. so hair clean, blasted dry and left..it's quite healthy but naturally quite frizzy and a hint of rain..POOF!

I don't want to go short short (I just look like my Dad plus I have a horrid nose!), might like a fringe, but I wear glasses some of the time and my fringe separates no matter what I do.
Any suggestions welcomed! I don't mind being grey and don't want to colour it, but I'd like to look a bit less wild :D

We are the same age and I think you look fab. Mine used to be thick but now thinning badly so I am a little envious. Don’t cut it off.

Good trim, a couple of inches is plenty, maybe try a tiny bit of conditioner.

milkyaqua · 24/01/2022 11:03

I love it! It suits you.

Don't cut it off.

Smartiepants79 · 24/01/2022 11:05

I also love the length the way it is.
I’d have it trimmed up and some decent shaping put in and yes to a dark brown colour if you want to.
I’m sure there’s a treatment you could have to hydrate and smooth it.
Don’t have a fringe if its going to separate on your forehead.

StillMedusa · 24/01/2022 11:13

Thank you for the compliments.. but I assure you I AM haggard Grin . I'm surprised that the general consensus is to keep it long, but maybe I'll get it cut a bit shorter. It used to be one length but had layers cut in and tbh it was a mistake as now it looks daft in a plait as bits stick out. I might see if I can train a bit of a fringe. It looks better straightened but then it makes me look long and thin (which I am I guess)
I can't wear it up in a bun.. it never holds and honestly with it being grey at the front there is a distinct 'now where did I leave my broomstick?' vibe! I'm not particularly vain , don't wear makeup and live a doggy/ child messy type life but there are limits :D
I'll google some slightly shorter haircuts and see if I can do some sort of fringe!

I think your hair suits your face.

If you're not happy with the grey then yes, go for some colour. But overall a bit of a trim and some conditioning treatments will be enough.

I'm your age too and wish I'd left my hair to grow long again - I'm thinking about it now.. ;)

Santaslittlemelter · 24/01/2022 11:20

You're boootiful! Either dye it a gentle colour, or cut it to a messy bob. But I hope I look that fab when I'm 54!

Iamnotamermaid · 24/01/2022 11:24

Nothing too drastic but maybe shoulder - collar bone length, get some choppy layers in, blunt ends, shaping around the face and maybe a curtain fringe. It will help thicken the hair up and give it more movement.

tokyo1 · 24/01/2022 11:29

I think you look fab and I love the long hair. I would keep it long too! Choppy layers around the face to frame but keep most of the length. Some treatment perhaps to get it smooth and shiny.

Gonnagetgoing · 24/01/2022 11:36

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Chin length would look great or is that too short? Your hair drowns your face at the moment and you have enviable cheek bones.
@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor - I agree actually - I think chin length or just below would look really nice and it'd grow back if not.

In terms of colour - blonde highlights would look good

mugoftea456 · 24/01/2022 11:36

HONEST OPINION.

I really actually like the colour. You are not haggard, your nose if fine.

I think it needs a trim and a deep conditioning treatment.

I agree with the layers comment - maybe a few long layers and fringe - I personally think if you get the nose pierced then go for the shorter cut.
Sacreblue · 24/01/2022 11:50

I’ve similar hair, bit longer, & plait it (two plaits a la pippilongstocking) all the time.

Loads of conditioner, plaited wet eith leave in & it’s good for a day.
Let out of the plaits & the waves will hold a day-ish will no other hold.

Plait back up with oil combed through & another day easy, maybe two if you avoid the roots a bit.

Longer hair is very versatile so I’m hanging on to mine.

Oh & save hair from your brush & mat it into a hair rat. It’ll be your colour match & replaceable too.

Pbbananabagel · 24/01/2022 11:52

Try using a hair stick instead of a band to put your hair in a bun! Takes a little getting used to but when you do it’s quick, easy and has a bit more pizazz. Kinder on long hair too.

JaneJeffer · 24/01/2022 13:33

You look really cool. I find the L'Oréal Professional Repair shampoo and conditioner good.

PumpkinCrumble · 24/01/2022 14:56

I love it! And you do not look haggard. I’d just have a trim and maybe a fringe put in as PP suggested.

lindyloo57 · 24/01/2022 15:42

I love it, I'm older than you 61, and my hair is slightly shorter than yours with some light layer but more blunt on bottom layer, I would just have a little trim. I trim mine own hair, I would like it to look more wispy on the bottom layer, but worried if I do it, will I like it, I quite like the blunt ends, it makes my hair feel thicker.

Taoneusa · 24/01/2022 15:59

Hi op. Smile your hair is really nice, I agree you don’t need to lose any length. The tangling at the back of the head is a pain, isn’t it. There’s a battery operated detangling brush by Remington, which makes detangling far less of a headache. If you get a bottle of almond oil and moisten your palms with it daily and run them lightly over your hair, it makes it less flyaway, less dry, and less prone to tangling.
Have you tried silk pillowcase and/or silk sleep turban? Really cuts back the frizz and tangles.
Revolution does an Olaplex dupe conditioner that can really really really tame the dryness too. Honestly. I speak from experience Grin
About your desire for a bit of sideways hair volume to counterbalance the ‘long’ vibe… try this idea:
howtowearfashion.com/hair/style-pigtails-trend-braided-cute-long-short-ribbons-scrunchie

I think half up pigtails would give you what you want. Try and ignore all the cheese on the above link, the idea is silk scrunchies (white, or cream colour, maybe? )with your locks tumbling out casually, just giving you extra volume but still looking casual and playful enough to go with your new piercing!
Your rocking your look, you just want a bit of a tweak, I reckon!

FannyFifer · 24/01/2022 16:35

You look fab, ur hair is amazing, I'm jealous as my hair is thin & totally shit.
Maybe trim to the top of the blue bit on ur t-shirt & a really good conditioning treatment.
Defo don't do anything major to ur lovely hair.

waltzingparrot · 24/01/2022 16:38

This length?

duvetdayforeveryone · 24/01/2022 16:42

@StillMedusa No advice, but your hair is beautiful :)

Kjr33 · 24/01/2022 16:47

Quick search on google, I would do high and low lights to even out the colour but keep it low maintenance as it grows out. Long curtain bangs to accentuate your cheekbones and a bit of length chopped off to tidy up the ends

pinkpillower · 24/01/2022 17:16

100% a bob above shoulder would look lovely and neat! But you looks fabulous as you are :)

SpikeySmooth · 24/01/2022 17:40

A shag, or rock chick layers, a bit of lightening, and bosh! You're done!

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 24/01/2022 17:42

You look lovely. A separated long fringe would look good, but definitely don’t lose much length!

piscis · 24/01/2022 17:46

You look great, and I don't normally like long hair. I wouldn't change anything!
