Business class flight .... help! What do I wear - ideas gratefully appreciated!

DH and are going on a special holiday to celebrate our 25th anniversary. So, we have splurged on business class flights en-route to Jamaica.

We go mid-Feb, and I'm having a sudden confidence crisis as I don't know what to wear..... I want to be comfortable, yet look stylish (and not look like an imposter)
I'm 55, 5'1, size 8 - feel youthful and want to look trendy, not trying.
Any tips? TIA

I can’t believe someone is suggesting jeans and a crisp white shirt, for an 8 hour flight??? You must be joking! Grin

KatharinaRosalie · 21/01/2022 06:54

a pair of sunnies and you’re good to go!

You will look like you're trying to hide recent surgery if you wear sunglasses on the plane.

I fly business for holidays mostly. I can assure you the business pods are private. They have privacy screens. No one would see you apply make up and no one would be close enough to care! Business does afford some private space.[/quote]
Definitely not on all airlines and not all seats!

seekinglondonlife · 21/01/2022 07:26

I love the prescribed detail of the "handbag on the crook of your arm". I wear a crossbody type bag, would it be obvious to all and sundry that I am a mere pleb? I don't wear my wedding ring and don't have an engagement ring. I fear I give off a Ryanair vibe 😭

CeeceeBloomingdale · 21/01/2022 07:29

The only people who dress up are staff on staff travel although the dress code for them has been relaxed in recent years. For long haul in winter I go for a loose dress and tights then remove the tights either just before landing or in the airport. Nice pashminas have no place on an aircraft, they get ruined, take a less expensive option if you like but blankets are provided.

eurochick · 21/01/2022 07:47

I'm laughing at the advert I'm getting on this thread. Is this the sort of crisp white t shirt the PP meant?

I don't tend to fly business I usually fly in my golden private jet and I simply roll around in some mud and leaves before take off.

The sneering on this thread is almost comical. So many frequent fliers.....

@Millylovespuddles there are beautiful combinations on Pinterest of stylish and comfortable long haul outfits. I'd treat myself to a lovely outfit for such a special occasion. Cashmere would feature as comfort is definitely key. Have a fantastic time!

@SoupDragon
What ones don’t have privacy screens? Why would anyone go with an airline that didn’t offer this? Although I guess some routes might not give you a choice. Crap airline or none at all! But I’d love to know what business class doesn’t give decent space and privacy. Although you have to compare like with like. Some airlines do 3 classes only or 2. We have found the 3 classes at Air Canada odd. The mid one is like BA Premium Economy which makes their Signature class more like a mix of business/first and usually priced above BA business from our experience. However you have to compare apples with apples!

TizerorFizz · 21/01/2022 08:19

As for what to wear: stretchy jeans are fine! T shirts are better than shirts as they don’t crease when you sleep. Not necessarily white. I find navy works well. You can pack something better to change into before landing - such as a crisp white shirt you have packed in your hand luggage together with clean pants if you have slept!

The aisle seats on BA for a start.

Why would anyone go with an airline that didn’t offer this?

Because it is the only airline flying that route on the day you need it.

SoupDragon · 21/01/2022 08:45

I mean, you have privacy from the rear facing pair next to you but not from the seats across the aisle or people walking past.

CrabPuff · 21/01/2022 09:00

BA does seem to have upgraded that though perhaps not everywhere yet. The last couple of flights I did late last year I was on an aisle seat and it had a sliding door for privacy which was new to me. They needed to up their game a bit compared to Qatar and Emirates.

SoupDragon · 21/01/2022 09:02

It will depend on the plane and the seat configuration.

SoupDragon · 21/01/2022 09:02

Flight I did last summer had no privacy in the aisle seat. Doesn't bother be in the slightest.

BA have club suites on many routes now but you won’t know until the day before for certain
SocksAndTheCity · 21/01/2022 09:10

This may have been answered upthread, but what exactly is 'crisp' when applied to clothes and why would we want clothes to be so?

If something of mine is crisp it's normally because it's been in the dryer for too long and definitely not something I would aim for?

TizerorFizz · 21/01/2022 09:48

“Crisp’ just defines not crumpled! Laundered and not a rag! That’s why you can keep a change of tip in your hand luggage.

SocksAndTheCity · 21/01/2022 10:19

But 'crisp' doesn't mean uncreased/uncrumpled?

I have on a cashmere sweater at the moment which is freshly handwashed/airdried and not at all crumpled, but it is also not in any way 'crisp'?

Jumpingintomenopause · 21/01/2022 10:30

So much bitchy behaviour on this thread Hmm.

G5000 · 21/01/2022 10:31

I don't tend to fly business I usually fly in my golden private jet and I simply roll around in some mud and leaves before take off.

I do occasionally fly private and indeed never dress up. As the jet is private and you don't need to spend time at the airport waiting around either, there's nobody to impress with your crisp shirt and carefully chosen jewellery.

DillDanding · 21/01/2022 10:41

People dress the same regardless of the cabin, in my experience. You’d look very conspicuous indeed if you dressed up.

I’m going to the Caribbean in Feb too. I layer up so I can discard a jumper when I get there. I generally wear jeans, but I know lots of people wouldn’t find that comfortable.

Well the first one that springs to mind is Virgin as they used to have that weird sloping bed configuration which was definitely not private for many many years .

Business class flight .... help! What do I wear - ideas gratefully appreciated!
Seniorandjunior · 21/01/2022 11:17

Funny thread.

Last time I pondered what to wear on a flight, I (daftly) thought jeans. 16yo called me a psychopath, 13yo was a little more polite and called me a weirdo. Grin
Moral is - don't wear jeans. Soft comfy clothes OP. Pretty much any soft comfy clothes.

TizerorFizz · 21/01/2022 17:23

@SocksAndTheCity
Clearly crisp wouldn’t refer to cashmere! How bizarre that you took my comment to mean that. Obviously it refers to laundered linen, or cotton, preferably sprayed with Milton Brown linen spray before you pack it!
