I love scented candles but always buy really cheap ones from Aldi, the Jo Malone cheapskates. I'm willing to splash out once and buy one that smells amazing, if it's expensive that's fine. What are your favourites?

Another fan of Diptyque (I like Foin Coupe and Mousses which are cut hay and moss, respectively, and they usually do a lovely pine one at Christmas). I used to love Feu de Bois but it makes my nose run which is annoying

Also Skandinavisk, the nicest one of which is Fjall but I got Rosenhave for Christmas which smells good

And the White Company Autumn one is really lovely, very appley

Please try www.selectaroma.com
I have and love wild fig & snowberry, rhubarb gin fizz, gingerbread and revitalise luxury essential oil candles.
All soya based and come packed in a box with chippings made from dissolvable potato starch instead of polystyrene. Candles from £16 (mini ones less). Smell amazing and last ages. I used to buy neom /white stuff / jo malone but am a total convert.

Diptyque Baies smells like 90s Bodyshop Dewberry to me! I prefer their Tuberose or Feu de Bois. True Grace Black Lily is also lovely.

TKMaxx sell good candles

DedalusBloom · 12/01/2022 05:56

Sand and Fog (you can pick up from TKMaxx) are good.

I love Insolite by Diptyque but you can only get it in Liberty, which is annoying.

Trudon candles are the absolute pinnacle for me although ridiculously expensive. Their Carmelite ( mossy walls) or Solis Rex ( Versailles wooden floors) scents are so evocative.

I've taken to making my own candles. It's not that expensive and there's a company that does a note perfect Baies oil for the friends of mine who love that smell. ( it's not one of my favourites)

Homeworx by Harry Slatkin candles. My MIL buys these and they are so good! 3 wicked candles.

Themadcatparade · 12/01/2022 09:29

For a not as extortionate as those mentioned above, potters crouch is a fave. The Indian flowers wax melts are so good.

ExConstance · 12/01/2022 09:32

Owen Drew, Even the package smells fantastic.

Imabouttoexplode · 12/01/2022 10:03

Another vote for sand and fog.

Beketaten · 12/01/2022 10:24

If you're spending more on candles, consider using a warmer instead of lighting them. You can melt the same wax over and over again, so they last many times longer than if you burn them.

I got mine from www.candlessniffsandgifts.co.uk/collections/candle-warming-lanterns-3 It's also adjustable, so you can control how much you melt.

Gonnagetgoing · 12/01/2022 10:33

Diptyque Feu du Bois or Baies or Tubereuse are my faves.

Having said that - I also ordered & Other Stories Punk Bouquet and also Sardonyx Fire recently which I liked as I like both those fragrances.

PKNMX Candles (find on Facebook or Instagram) are really nice too and a black owned brand - they're also very pretty colours, and also Upcircle do Chai Latte, Espresso Martini and natural scented candles which smell wonderful.

Tibtab · 12/01/2022 10:36

I like Diptyque - Londres, think it’s limited edition though. Very floral.
Or Diptyque Oranger or Pomander, both warming Christmas, orange and cinnamon type scents. They also do a new one which I bought to try called Litchi which is rose and lychee.

I don’t like Baies, it’s personal preference. Bit too grassy for me.

Gonnagetgoing · 12/01/2022 10:38

For a scent which is quite subtle and not overpowering, I was given this candle in Fresh Linen for a birthday - think they're Danish owned.

Have a look at The Hackney Edit. I received one of their candles (Gingerberry) for Christmas and it was amazing. Plus all of their products are vegan!

Groovytiger · 12/01/2022 11:46

I got given a lime, freesia and lavender candle from this company and absolutely adore it. It smells so good and looks stunning too www.handpouredbysarah.co.uk/candles

I recently used one from SÓ SOY, made in N. Ireland, and was very pleased with the throw. Specific scent would depend on your preference.

I got one of these at Christmas and it was lovely.

Skandinavisk Skog - lovely northern forest smell
Any of the Neom ones

Bottomofsmughill · 12/01/2022 18:14

I love Jo Malone and the Aldi are a pretty good dupe but don’t throw the scent so much. Very cheap peony one from Sainsburys is good too.

Someone on here / Instagram recommended Lovato candles. I ordered a couple and the lemongrass one is gorgeous!

HarrietsweetHarriet · 12/01/2022 21:16

I was sceptical st first, but Valentte (online) are surprisingly good. The lemongrass and rosemary is my favourite - it's fresh and zingy without being cloying. I've received lots of compliments from visitors. They often have a 50% offer on so £30 will get you three items (diffusers, candles, room sprays) plus a freebie and samples of their other scents. It all comes in a classy box with ribbon reminiscent of Jo Malone.

TKMaxx sell good candles
Yes, worth having a look whenever you're in.

They do lots of Sand + Fog and lots of other "high-end" brands. I've had some great finds.

DH always gets me Jo Malone for Christmas/Birthday/Valentines etc and they are lovely, but I think less lovely than they used to be.
