No buy or low buy 2022

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 15:57

Ive just made my final purchase of 2021.
I want to have a "no buy" year with regards to clothes.
But I'm wondering if I should make it a "low buy" so I don't feel too restricted and then rebel against myself.
I could give myself a limit to the number of purchases for 2022 say 12 items maximum for the year?

Anybody done this and have tips for avoiding failure on the challenge.

I often do "Low Buy" but couldn't do No Buy .

My favourite item of clothing is jumpers Grin but I don't wear certain yarns so that narrows it a bit
I don't really buy clothes online , but if I see something instore (usually M&S or Sainsbury) if I;m not 100% then I;ll go off and order online to give myself time to think .

I cannot buy into the ordering £100s worth of clothes to try in at home followed by it's all going back . I know Consumer Rights are much better online ( you can get a refund if you change your mind that a shop isn't obliged to give you).

I do need new underwear in the new year but that's an essential.
I am going on a Cruise ( it was cancelled 2 years ago so been waiting a while and it was a special event ) . I have clothes for that .

I don't need any more jumpers at the moment . Grin

Sales are usually shite unless tou are stalking something you know that you would've paid full price for .

A few years ago , I kept a note of things I bought /money spent in my desk diary , going to do it this year

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/12/2021 16:16

Oh , and my personal rule for me ( it might not work for others )

I never buy clothes to cheer myself up . If I'm pissed off , sad, angry those clothes would remind me off this every time I looked at them.

Might buy some nice toiletries , they'd get used up , but not clothes

I just have enough bar maybe some summer stuff as I'm crap at looking stylish in the summer due to just feeling too freaking hot.

If I know I have to pace myself with 12 items for the year it should slow me down and make my purchases more intentional.

Just the thought of "No buy" makes me want to go shopping immediately. I'm not sure I'm ready for that even if I want to be the kind of person who can.

And yes I think writing it down will help

I'm challenging myself to buy second hand only. Thank god for ebay!

Floisme · 31/12/2021 16:27

No-buy would never work for me. The surest way to get me obsessing about something is to forbid it. And then, having fallen off the wagon, I'd be so depressed and cross with myself that I'd go out and buy even more.

(It's probably just as well I never got into hard drugs.)

But also - and I guess I may be out of step with some posters here - there are some businesses that I want to support. I think for me it's more about learning to shop more carefully and ethically and sustainably. And while I certainly don't claim to have achieved that, I don't believe any arbitrary ban or even limit is going to help.

AuntieMarys · 31/12/2021 16:30

Low buy here. At 6 feet tall you have to grab clothes that fit when you can.

Peridot1 · 31/12/2021 16:30

I’m in.

My sale purchases have just arrived - two handbags, a leather card holder, a pair of slip on trainers and a pair of shoes. Not buying anything else.

I have a huge stash of skin care which is one of my weaknesses so really don’t need any more. Ditto make up.

Also books - have loads to read on my kindle and real books.

So I’m really hoping I can do a very low buy for 2022. I certainly won’t need anything till the middle of the year I don’t think.

TabithaTittlemouse · 31/12/2021 16:35

I’m on a no spend January thread but clothes are my weakness so limiting myself for the rest of the year (after a complete no spend month) will do me good!
I’m thinking of doing a no spend every other month, I’m not sure.
I don’t really need anything but need to remind myself of that repeatedly!

lindyloo57 · 31/12/2021 16:37

I've kept a notebook for the last twenty years of everything i buy clothing wise, the last two years, I've brought half the amount of items, so hoping to keep this going from now on, I also am going to start counting makeup and creams, I have far to many.

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 17:11

I decluttered my make up stash last night.
Most of it purchased pre pandemic so needed binning. I've barely worn make up since March 2020.
I've replaced the most used stuff with same or similar items and don't plan to buy any more at all in 2022 other than my foundation if I run out.

I'm up for a low spend 2022. I've not spent much on clothes since lockdown and will need to buy a new work clothes when I return to work in an office, probably after Easter. Other than that I should be OK. I'm also on the beauty hoarders thread and don't think I'll need to buy anything in 2023 apart from moisturiser with an spf.

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 18:21

It might help me to post here each of the 12 items I buy over the year.
Accountability.

OP posts:
applesandpears33 · 31/12/2021 18:34

12 items. That is a good target. I think I bought much less than that last year but have more gaps to fill this time round.

Amelion · 31/12/2021 18:39

I’d like to do a low-buy. There are things I’ll allow myself like practical items that I tend to just replace when needed - sports stuff, underwear etc. But luxury items and stuff I don’t really need I’d like to just minimise - something like one thing a month seems good - then I can just get one good quality thing that I have to really think about before I commit.

LiveFromNewYork · 31/12/2021 18:51

I tried one thing a month in 2020 but quickly fell off the wagon. The pandemic didn't help, far too much time on my hands.

No buy is better for me as low buy allows me to keep looking and making excuses (oh I'll buy this as probably won't keep that other thing or that one can be for my birthday so I still have an item this month). Part of my reason was environmental so didn't make any sense to still be buying and returning stuff. I think I ended up buying (keeping) 35 items!

Then it happened again in 2021. Realised I needed to go no spend but then let up a little in July and all hell broke loose. I need cold turkey or it doesn't happen. Just depends what suits everyone though.

Just sitting here looking at the clock - five hours before the window closes for 2022! Going to try and do whole year no spend this time.

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 18:53

I'm thinking no purchases for whole of January, then maximum 12 for the year will mean if the summer dress or winter boots I didn't find this year come up then I don't have to miss out.
Also limiting to 12 means I'm less likely to waste that opportunity on something I'm really not sure about.

OP posts:
GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 18:55

Yeah if I fail to low buy then no buy it will have to be.
Cold turkey.

OP posts:
Inthesameboatatmo · 31/12/2021 19:55

I'm going to try to do this in the new year ,I've far too much stuff.

MadeinSW3 · 31/12/2021 22:01

I have no space in my house for any more… started boxing things up and piling up the bathroom. Needs to stop…

InspectorAlleyn · 31/12/2021 22:07

I am going to do low-buy and only buy second-hand items if I do buy anything. I’ve ordered a few things from Vinted and I am pleased with what I have received, so I will continue with that. I have a new job starting soon, which requires more formal clothes, otherwise I would have tried to do no-buy.

tinselvestsparklepants · 31/12/2021 23:05

Low-buy but second hand only if I can. With the exception of clothes I can make. Or shall I include that in the 12?..... making a skirt this weekend. Need to go through what I have and make sure I'm wearing it all not just the usual suspects! New job recently so still trying to find out what my wardrobe is for my new job. All my colleagues dress wildly differently!

doadeer · 01/01/2022 08:35

I'm on low buy but no buy for January.

Got a lot of expenses coming up and I've been too quick to treat myself last year

Girlintheframe · 01/01/2022 08:53

I'm going to try no buy till March then reassess. Would love to do no buy all year but honestly think I would find it so hard. Hoping the rest of the year or at least till summer will be low buy. After the Xmas shopping and a few sale treats I'm feeling done with shopping.

GranolaHolmes · 01/01/2022 09:46

Ok day 1 Brew
