Do you have a signature makeup look?

Hi all, I really like makeup but feel like I’m stuck in a bit of a makeup rut. I turned 40 this year which I think is part of it. Do you have a signature look? What do go for day-to-day? I suppose I’m just looking for a bit of inspiration. Thanks in advance everyone.

Following!

I am not entirely sure what you mean by signature look. But, I usually go heavier on my eyes and a nude lip or lip balm.

I have quite large dark eyes, that stand out. Over the years a few colleagues say drawing attention to my eyes helps me command the room, which I need to do. I have no idea if it that's true. But I stick to it

I use lots of different colours on my eyes. And work make up is lighter than evening make up.

I keep my skin quite natural as I am mixed race (Indian and Irish) and have quite a lot of freckles. Trying to cover the freckles ends up with a mask like look. So I don't even try.

Sorry if that's not what you mean. Smile

Doesntfeellikexmas · 27/12/2021 21:13

Oh and if I am talking in front alot of people or going 'out out' I wear false lashes

DukeofEarlGrey · 27/12/2021 21:18

I do, yes - skin as natural as possible (tinted moisturiser), defined eyes and natural lips and cheeks. I guess you could call it 'natural polished' pr some such. Mostly based on finding holy grail products over the years and watching MAU like Lisa Eldridge to help with technique. I am also 40 and now use even less makeup on my skin as it can sit in fine lines. I have also moved to more liquid products like cream blush, cream eyeshadow and a balmy lipstick for daytime. Also liquid highlighter for sheen but not glitter. The overall look is the same as I have worn for years but definitely more natural and better products now.

ChocolateRiver · 27/12/2021 21:20

Thanks both. @DukeofEarlGrey do you have any favourite products that you would recommend? Thank you

Pre covid my look was a sharp as fuck winged liner. Nigh on 2 years of WFH, I’m de skilled in the art of the wing.

Notwithittoday · 27/12/2021 21:25

Yes. Mine is foundation, CT flawless filter on high points, Clinique chubby stick to contour, blusher, dust of highlight, Mac teddy eyeliner smudged out, mascara and whatever lipgloss that comes to hand. If I’m going out I do a bit of eyeshadow snd darken the eyeliner or swap for liquid

Hotmess1 · 27/12/2021 21:30

Another vote for Charlotte tilbury flawless filter - fantastic as a base for brightening the skin and also dotted on as a highlighter. Would also recommend watching Lisa Eldridge on YouTube for inspiration x

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 27/12/2021 21:34

Always a lot of eye makeup! I wear anything from copper to purple but I'm never seen without eyeshadow so I guess that's a signature? Grin

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 27/12/2021 21:35

Day time is tinted moisturiser and a very bright bold lip.
Night time is nude lip and Smokey eye

ChocolateRiver · 27/12/2021 21:38

Thanks everyone. I’ve never had any Charlotte Tilbury so will have a look. I’m always put off by the staff in my local John Lewis.

I don’t like Charlotte Tilbury stuff in general ( tried the foundation, lipsticks and eyeshadow) but the flawless Hollywood filter I stock up on. It’s quite good value as well

EssexLioness · 27/12/2021 22:16

Not sure if this counts as a signature look but I do have a go to look, which I keep quite natural. Involves concealer, touch of brown eyeliner on top lids, blusher, touch of face powder and pink tinted lipgloss. If going out somewhere nice I will add mascara, and maybe a touch of natural eyeshadow and some foundation. Basically just enough product to look a bit fresher and well rested but not looking too ‘done’. My eyebrows are microbladed so don’t need to worry about those.

TheAnswerIsDontThinkAboutIt · 27/12/2021 22:20

Eyeliner, plenty of it. Been doing it since I was a teenager and don't feel like myself without it, so I guess that's my look.

Never been into lipstick.

I really like Chantecaille make up now I'm in my 40s - partly because I think it's great quality and partly because I couldn't afford it when younger! The cream blusher, liquid highlighter and Future Skin foundation are all really good. However, I use Maybelline gel liner and Max Factor mascara because I find them better than any fancier stuff I have tried.
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/12/2021 23:17

Mine is red lipstick. I use very light foundation, a bit of blusher, nude eyeshadow and black mascara usually, but could do lips and just curled lashes if need be. I prefer an orange-red but have loads to choose from!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 28/12/2021 00:04

As much eye make up as I can get on my eyes.

I never really bothered about lipstick until about a year ago, but now I am trying to use it most days. But for me it’s all about the eye make up.

madmomma · 28/12/2021 00:56

I like to emphasise both eyes and lips, despite the weight of beauty opinion being that it should be one or the other. I like the balanced look it gives. Also like a nice bright blush. I probably look like a painted doll, but it's how I feel most myself.

Violetroselily · 28/12/2021 08:46

My day to day make up would probably be considered glam by some. I look like I've just been exhumed if I don't have a fairly substantive covering...

Typically:
full coverage foundation
A bit of Gimme Brow to tidy my brows (they are naturally dark and a good shape)
Two eyeshadows (lighter and then a darker one blended out) - day to day I tend to use more nudes, dusky pinks, bronze, gold etc
Winged liquid eyeliner
Mascara
Bronzer, blusher and highlighter - typically one of the Hourglass palettes
Tend not to wear anything on my lips, but occasionally use a nude lipstick

For occasions I would tone it up a bit with false lashes, darker lip, glitter shadow etc

lindyloo57 · 28/12/2021 12:51

Can anyone recommend a highlighter that's not glittery, and would suit a mature skin.

allofthecheese · 28/12/2021 12:55

I keep it as natural looking as possible too. The no-make up make up look I guess. BB cream, I fill out my eyesbrows. Always curl my lashes and sometimes will put mascara on. And I love a tinted lip balm, I have so many. I'll add blush if I'm feeling it but again I use the benefit dandelion so really quite subtle. If I wanted to be more 'done' then I'll add a winged eyeliner but that's the extent of it really.

EllaPaella · 28/12/2021 13:05

I put gradual tan on my face every night. Then in morning moisturise and follow with Estee Lauder double wear or L'Oréal true match foundation. Then Rimmel trio of bronzer, blush and highlighter (the highlight isn't too shiny and doesn't highlight fine lines!). I use a brow pen for my eyebrows, brown eye liner and soft neutral eye shadow followed by mascara.
I wear lipstick or a coloured lip balm, either Bobbi Brown or Maybelline babylips in cherry me.
I've done the same thing since I was in my early 20's and pretty much use the same products!

SalcombeSunset · 28/12/2021 13:12

I used to wear a lot of heavy makeup, being naturally fair I look pretty washed out without it esp in winter months. Have really toned down the heavy foundation and thick kohl in recent years, my signature look now is a dewy warm skin, I love Becca highlighter, Clarins Skin Illusion and some Bobbi Brown Bronzer, plus a smidge of Bourjois pink blusher. I use a dark brown shadow applied with an angled brush on my eyes which wakes them up but still looks natural. Mascara and brows obvs. Tint them when I can. I always wear a Mac lip. I like pinky browns or a bold red. Their lipstick always stays on and doesn’t dry or bleed. I have so many colours it’s embarrassing!

LaBellina · 28/12/2021 13:15

BB cream
Bit of powder
Mascara
Eyebrows filled in with pencil
Some lip balm or lipgloss in a nude pink tint

I have rosacea unfortunately so some days, my skin is red and blotchy on my cheeks so on those days, I don’t add blush to the ‘mess’ that are my cheeks. If I look a bit pale, I love some light pink or coral blush.
I also wear shimmery gold, pink or brown eyeshadow now and then. Photos of my eye and lip makeup today.

Tinted moisturiser (Bobbi brown serum), little bit of bare minerals “mineral veil” powder, under eye concealer nude eyeshadow, mascara, bit of blusher, light eyebrow pencil. It’s a fairly natural look although it requires a bit of effort! I use mainly Bobbi Brown products. If im dressing up I’ll chuck on a bit extra eyeshadow, some eyeliner and matte lipstick.

I think it really depends how your skin is, and which parts of your face you want to emphasise. Mine is combination (so prone to shininess) with patches of redness and a bit of acne scarring. I have quite big lips and pale eyelashes and eyebrows so mascara and eyebrow pencil helps balance that out.
