Do you have a signature makeup look?

Hi all, I really like makeup but feel like I’m stuck in a bit of a makeup rut. I turned 40 this year which I think is part of it. Do you have a signature look? What do go for day-to-day? I suppose I’m just looking for a bit of inspiration. Thanks in advance everyone.

Red lips are my signature. So day to day I wear ct flawless filter,Nars radiant concealer undereyes,ct powder and bronzer to contour. Estee lauder doublewear mascara and a red lip. My favourite lipsticks are Mac.

ChocolateRiver · 28/12/2021 15:32

Thanks everyone, love hearing about how everyone does their makeup. @MrsBerthaRochester I love red lipstick and will often wear it when I’m on a night out/out for dinner but I feel self conscious during the day time, like everyone is looking at me. They won’t be, it’s just how I feel.

Tinted moisturiser, sometimes a bit of very light primer, dark browny grey eyeliner (upper lids only), browny black mascara (upper lashes only), usually red lipstick but sometimes pinky brown depending on outfit colours.

Eyeshadow once in a while, usually fairly neutral colours. I very rarely wear blusher and I don't always darken my eyebrows, although I should in theory because they're naturally light orange, but I always feel it looks weird on me, and besides they're usually hidden by my longish fringe.

peaceanddove · 28/12/2021 16:57

Very clear, polished skin thanks to Erborian BB cream. Very good eyebrows. Thick, curled lashes thanks to LVL. Grey/taupe eyeliner from Urban Decay smudged into my upper lashes. Bobbi Brown Tinted lip balm in Pale Pink.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 28/12/2021 17:55

35 here, overall I like a very minimal no makeup makeup look, minimal base/cheeks/eyes and if I want some drama I go for a bright red or plum lip colour

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 28/12/2021 18:22

My usual makeup below if you fancy something a bit heavier (not including the skincare bit before). Full disclaimer, I have black hair, olive skin and dark eyes so colours may not suit but routine would be the same:

Foundation (just a normal L’Oréal one)
Powder (the Fit Me one)
Blusher in a peach colour or a plum for evenings
Peachy/nude lips (H&M do a brilliant cheeks and lips stick, think mine was Pumpkin but the name’s rubbed off)
Eyeshadow (Naked Palette - Naked usually)
Mascara - a good mascara changes the whole game; I switched to Lancôme’s doll eyes and it’s brill)
Liquid Eyeliner (Rimmel’s waterproof one in Black Magic is excellent)

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 28/12/2021 18:24

Also eyebrows can change your whole face just with waxing or threading!

Some good resources to start would be Sali Hughes’s columns in the guardian, and a friendly beauty counter who can give you a bit of guidance (Bobbi Brown is usually great).

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 28/12/2021 20:22

Minimal. I want to look like my natural self, just better. So tinted moisturiser (Laura mercier), mascara (benefit roller lash), lipstick (charlotte tilbury pillow talk), blusher (Nars orgasm) and just a light dusting of finishing powder (currently using a beauty pie one). For special occasions I use a glittery eyeliner (urban decay)

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 28/12/2021 20:28

I always wear mascara and blusher
Even if nothing else I like the french kind of tousled look *in my head it’s Bardot in the mirror it’s federation president Barry Fife

ChocolateRiver · 28/12/2021 20:56

Lots of people seem to wear liner on their top lashes. I never really do this, I find it tricky and time consuming but it might be something I can start doing. I’ve got Mac Teddy liner but rarely use it so might start there.

Lol! I love this thread title.

Blurgh Sali Hughes and her boring dry face approach.

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 28/12/2021 21:26

Weird how many people decry Hughes when she’s not only successful but pretty, eh @TeaAddict235?

What do you mean by this? Dry face approach?
eldorado02 · 28/12/2021 22:31

@NarcissaMalfoysManicure

Weird how many people decry Hughes when she’s not only successful but pretty, eh *@TeaAddict235*?
She’s chosen to forsake impartiality and integrity to ride the influencer shilling gravy train, plus she lies about her use of tweakments while extolling the virtues of an increasingly expensive AND complex beauty routine, so she’s no longer the guru she was to me a decade ago. But yeah, just accuse anyone who doesn’t prostrate themselves in front of her as being jealous, why not?
GiveYourHeadAWobble · 28/12/2021 22:32

My signature look is natural, although it does involve a fair few products.

I go for light dewy skin with no powder, cream blush and a moisturised lip with a colour that looks natural on me.
I line my top lash line with brown pencil and smudge, then apply soft brown powder over the top. I powder my eyebrows for arch definition (but go for defined rather than thick brows) and put on dark brown mascara. I want to look healthy, dewy and natural. Because without makeup I look exhausted, blotchy and actually quite ill.

Ikeameatballs · 28/12/2021 22:41

I also just try to look better rather than different.

Moisturiser
Small amount of L’Oreal True Match Foundation
Eyebrow pencil, used to buy Benefit one but when looking for Halloween make-up I found an excellent one for £3 from The Range of all places.
Revlon ColorStay Creme eyeshadow in Brulee on my lids
Benefit Rollerlash mascara
Benefit Hoola bronzer
Pawpaw balm on lips/cheeks

Night out I’d add eyeliner and a darker or more colourful eye shadow and a more glamorous lipstick.

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 28/12/2021 22:54

Where did I use the word jealous, @eldorado02? A little telling that you immediately thought that.

Take yourself and TeaAddict off to the tattlelife cesspit with the other single-called amoeba, if you can’t offer the OP some good advice without tearing down a woman whose job it is to advise on makeup.

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 28/12/2021 23:02

I guess a good place to start @ChocolateRiver would be - is there a celebrity whose makeup look you like? Not necessarily someone who wears theatrical makeup but someone like Nigella, Holly Willoughby etc.? You could pick out what you like about their makeup and try one thing for a while, see if you like it on you/it fits into your routine without too much bother.

SocialConnection · 28/12/2021 23:46

If you're facing perimenopause can I recommend the excellent Angie Hot and Flashy YouTube and Instagram accounts? she does in-depth videos on how to do make-up for the mature face and she is lovely, very down-to-earth and skilled.

Westerman · 29/12/2021 00:15

I think my skin is pretty good for my age and my complexion is quite clear. I guess I'd say it's my signature to not want to hide this. Some days I'll just use a little concealer (Il Makiage's F*ck I'm Flawless) under my eyes, a little cream blusher (Fenty Beauty Cheeks Out), a black or brown felt-tip eyeliner, a single coat of brown mascara (I just changed to the Eyeko Black Magic Cocoa Edit that was in the M & S beauty advent calendar) and a brown pencil for my brows. If I want a dewy finish for my skin, but still don't need any coverage, I add the Kiko Skin Trainer CC Blur as a base. If I need a bit of coverage, I use Makeup Forever's Watertone foundation, which is a runny product but gives a lovely and light finish.
I guess the eye products and blusher are my staples and then I play about with either no base or a very light one, depending on how I feel about my skin on the day in question. I've never managed to get eyeshadow right so stopped trying, and lips are usually a clear or tinted balm or a mid-pink gloss.

It's taken me a while to arrive at this after hitting middle age, noticing my features seemed to be almost disappearing (if that makes sense) and feeling quite invisible! I do believe, though, that caring for your skin well, finding the right products for you, does wonders and can help minimise the amount of make-up you need.

TeaAddict235 · 29/12/2021 11:51

Success & beauty are relative @NarcissaMalfoysManicure . I can't explain why others aren't in support of ms Hughes, but I reserve the right to hold my own opinion, and I don't hold her as the oracle of beauty or beauty wisdom.

TeaAddict235 · 29/12/2021 11:57

Did we dare to raise our head just a little too much @eldorado02 ? Did we not cut out enough style and beauty clippings and staple them into our beauty homework diaries? Some women on MN are apparently untouchable, no critique must ever be laid before their thrones.

S'all right. The world keeps turning and the simoleons keep churning.

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 29/12/2021 12:14

^ this thread isn’t about critiquing SH, it’s about providing OP with advice. If your reaction to SH being mentioned is to mean girl her that’s your own idiotic hang-up. Saying “blurgh sali Hughes” like a 12 year old without offering an alternative view isn’t necessary.

So yes DFOD.

rufflyshirt · 29/12/2021 12:20

Winged eyeliner is mine - no lipstick really unless i'm going to a party or something, then it's a wine colour.

I look weird without eyeliner (to myself) - if I could spend every day dolled up like Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra I'd be happy Grin

Also wth is a "dry face approach"?
