How do you do daily life with an engagement ring!?

DH got me a fancy ring yesterday, I didn’t get one a decade ago as we couldn’t afford it. I absolutely love it but didn’t wear it today because - well, wasn’t sure if I should! I’ve googled but I’m not a glamourous newly engaged person having brunch with my girlfriends, I am changing nappies, it’s a pandemic and I’m washing hands thoroughly.

I really want to wear it every day, but I have questions such as what do you do at work when you go to the loo? The articles say don’t ever take it off in public? Do you sleep with it on? Put it on as soon as you wake up? Keep it in its ring box? Carry a ring box around in handbag? How do you make sure your hands are washed thoroughly under the ring? Cleaning and hoovering, do you take it off or wear gloves over? Any other tips I should be conscious of?

I just wear them all the time. If you start taking it off you are too likely to lose it.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 26/12/2021 19:21

I used to never take mine off! Slept in it and everything.

Now I take it off at night and put it on in the morning. I don't know that that few millimetres of one of my fingers is clean after washing, but it doesn't particularly bother me.

delilahbucket · 26/12/2021 19:24

I took mine off loads when I first got it, but now I only remove it in the shower (because it spins round) and when I'm handling raw meat or mixing food with my hands. It gets soaped and handcreamed 50 times a day, it's been swimming a lot and in the sea. Mine is platinum so I know it doesn't damage easily and the diamond is very well set.

PlacidPenelope · 26/12/2021 19:24

I never take mine off, I wash my hands with it on, I wear gloves when washing up and if cleaning with water etc., it's been on my finger for decades, still sparkly, not damaged.

ofwarren · 26/12/2021 19:24

I just wear mine all the time

delilahbucket · 26/12/2021 19:25

Also, your insurer may not cover it unless it is on your finger or in a safe.

Ohyesiam · 26/12/2021 19:25

I just wear it on my ring finger, it’s very simple.

Goodluckanddontfuckitup · 26/12/2021 19:26

Congratulations on your lovely ring OP. I used to take mine off to sleep and if I was gardening or something like that. Both times when I've been pregnant my fingers have gotten puffy towards the end, so it got harder to take off. With DS2 I just thought sod it and now I wear it all the time. Baby is 6 months now. Grin
I find it really doesn't get dirty. I'm washing my hands so often and I give it a good wash and a wiggle around on my finger when I do.
I worried more about losing it or DS1 eating it or something when I took it off. Grin

I only take mine off if I’m using sandpaper which isn’t that often. Sandpaper can scratch platinum although I think it can be polished

Voice0fReason · 26/12/2021 19:30

If I was too afraid to wear it then I wouldn't want it.
I want a ring that I can wear all day every day - which is what I have.
I take it off very occasionally to clean it or on odd occasions when I am doing some kinds of DIY.

Callcat · 26/12/2021 19:31

I did daily life with my engagement ring by pawning it and spending the money on gig tickets 😆 I don't recommend if you're still in the actual engagement/marriage though 🤣 on a serious note, I just wore mine all the time. I still go to twiddle it sometimes, despite not having worn it for 8 years!

Natsukine · 26/12/2021 19:32

I only take mine off for washing up. And it’s massive! 😂

OddBoots · 26/12/2021 19:33

I don't wear mine often, I scratched my son with it when he was a baby (he is in his in his 20s now) so it went in the jewellery box and I only put it on for special occasions. I have my wedding band though so I do wear a ring but it isn't scratchy and is easy to clean.

Bluntness100 · 26/12/2021 19:34

Honestly it’s 32 years ago I got engaged, when I was 23. My ring has not been off my finger since,

ExquisitelyDecorated · 26/12/2021 19:35

I only take mine off for kneading dough or similar. Wear gloves for gardening. Wash around and under it and avoid the stones when rubbing in handcream.

JulieGoods · 26/12/2021 19:36

Only take mine off to sleep.

Sometimes I keep it on for that too (if away from home)

Have kept it in for months/years at a time before but currently in an off for bed routine as all the Covid sanitiser means I moisturise my hands before bed and my skin under my rings (engagement + wedding + eternity) was extra dry.

M0rT · 26/12/2021 19:37

I felt like this when I was first engaged, brought the ring box on holiday and took it off at night.
My friend was horrified when I told her, thought I was lucky not to be robber Grin
You should keep it on all the time, using rubber gloves when necessary.
Keep it on while washing your hands so that it is cleaned too. I loosen mine and work it up a bit to clean the skin underneath.
Enjoy it!

tiredanddangerous · 26/12/2021 19:39

I took mine off on my wedding day to put my wedding ring under it. That was 2006 and I haven't taken it off since.

Doesntfeellikexmas · 26/12/2021 19:41

I take mine off to sleep. Mainly because I think I must take rings off at night, while asleep.

I also take it off if I am sticking hands in food, like baking. And when bathing.

Other than that, it's always on. Its quite big and the setting is quite tall and you just seem to learn to work with it.
I have misplaced a few that way.

ImInStealthMode · 26/12/2021 19:45

My ring is quite big and heavy (ultimate first world problem). I don't wear it to sleep in or if I'm just lounging at home / doing housework.

Washing hands at work or out I take it off & put it in my pocket then straight back on when my hands are dry. If I'm just rinsing them rather than a proper scrub I don't take it off.

Houseofvelour · 26/12/2021 19:45

I only take mine off to moisturise my hands

Cheesymonster · 26/12/2021 19:45

I take mine off at night but only because my fingers swell up like sausages while I sleep! Other than that I wear it all day.

Congratulations OP

Allthesefolks · 26/12/2021 19:49

I rarely take it off but I deliberately chose a flat design so it wasn’t constantly catching on everything or accumulating lots of crap in the setting.

Madge55 · 26/12/2021 19:49

Read somewhere recently that all the hand sanitizer can loosen the settings so bear that in mind.

Allthesefolks · 26/12/2021 19:50

Apart from when I had fat sausage pregnancy fingers, then it stayed in the box for a few months!
