How do you do daily life with an engagement ring!?

DH got me a fancy ring yesterday, I didn’t get one a decade ago as we couldn’t afford it. I absolutely love it but didn’t wear it today because - well, wasn’t sure if I should! I’ve googled but I’m not a glamourous newly engaged person having brunch with my girlfriends, I am changing nappies, it’s a pandemic and I’m washing hands thoroughly.

I really want to wear it every day, but I have questions such as what do you do at work when you go to the loo? The articles say don’t ever take it off in public? Do you sleep with it on? Put it on as soon as you wake up? Keep it in its ring box? Carry a ring box around in handbag? How do you make sure your hands are washed thoroughly under the ring? Cleaning and hoovering, do you take it off or wear gloves over? Any other tips I should be conscious of?

Wear it every day, ring box at night. It only comes off during day if I am at home baking or cooking where recipe involves using hands for something quite messy.

didireallysaythat · 26/12/2021 21:28

I take mine off all the time - you need to take them off everytime you wash your hands so in the last two years I've stopped wearing my rings altogether (my engagement and wedding rings are a good, almost tight fit). I did used to wear them all the time but agree that they then need cleaning - which takes my jewellers 2-3 weeks normally ...

Chakraleaf · 26/12/2021 21:29

Got a cheap one for this reason. Wear it for everything. Swimming etc never worry about losing it!

BarefootHippieChick · 26/12/2021 21:33

Worn mine over 20 years and only take it off when washing my hair as otherwise it gets caught in the stones. I wear several rings permanently and never take them off.

@BakeOffRewatch I do have some of those cotton gloves yes - thanks for the reminder! I am lazy, so took off the rings rather than focusing on removing them to wash hands and putting on moisturiser more often. I’ll give the gloves a wear tonight!

Your ring sounds gorgeous, I love the pics you posted Smile

Suzi888 · 26/12/2021 22:22

I take mine off at bedtime and if cooking. I wear gloves if I’m cleaning or gardening.

Bavarois · 26/12/2021 22:36

Thanks for this thread OP, I got engaged earlier this month and have been wondering the same thing. Suspect PP's MIL would be proud of me, I think I'll be wearing for show only. I work in healthcare and have a dog so wearing a lovely ring full-time just doesn't fit with my lifestyle. It's annoying though, I wish I could be one of the people who hadn't had it off their finger since they got engaged.

MyGreenTutu · 26/12/2021 22:44

I only take mine off when gardening or when doing very messy cooking eg rubbing fat into flour, kneading dough etc. I figure if it fits well it's less likely to get lost if it's safely left on my finger.

BakeOffRewatch · 26/12/2021 22:47

Congratulations on your winter engagement @Bavarois! I think one thing has been common, everyone has enjoyed their ring in their own way (including the PP who sold it for gig tickets). My take on it is they’re lovely things but not for practical activities, they started as objets for ladies without jobs after all, and hobbies like embroidery.

I’m off to bed, will report back in the AM on if there’s any scratched faces Grin.

Thank you @BlairWaldorfLovesShopping, I have in the past wore it whilst at desk job too, having my hands at the keyboard makes it worse. If yours is really bad, having hand protector rather than moisturiser on for 3 days as much as possible can make a u-turn.

We were watching a film (well I was not) and I think DH is a bit upset when he saw me googling images as he doesn’t want me to know how much it cost.

i wear mine all the time except when at work, we're not allowed any jewellery so i take it off just before i leave and put it on when i get home.

Boood · 26/12/2021 23:05

I take mine off overnight and don’t put it on in the morning until I’ve exercised and showered. I also take it off if I’m doing any cooking that involves getting my hands in the food. I have one of those little cones in the kitchen, so if it’s not on my finger it’s there or in its box in my bedroom. I’ve never mislaid it.
And I don’t take it on holiday because I worry about losing it in the sea or being mugged. I hide it at home and wear the cz ring my husband proposed with on holiday instead.
I very rarely take my wedding ring off- only if I’m doing something really messy like making meatballs.

StormBaby · 26/12/2021 23:07

Mine is over 100 years old and I never take it off. It’s well worn and tough!

Amelion · 26/12/2021 23:15

I have a platinum engagement ring with a diamond. It’s not delicate really - both materials are hard wearing.

I don’t sleep with it on just for personal preference so put it in my jewellery box overnight, then only put it back on when I’ve had a shower etc in the morning (to avoid getting creams etc on it - not really a problem but they leave a film on the diamond which makes it less shiny). I also take it off for some sports - I do martial arts and outdoor swimming so it’s not exactly safe to wear but I keep it on for running. I also take it off for cleaning and sometimes cooking - eg you don’t want to get oil on it, again just as it looks much sparklier clean.

My tip is just have a specific place you always leave it so you don’t worry about losing it - I always put mine in the same place regardless of where I am when I take it off.

Get it covered by insurance.

Otherwise enjoy!

TheLadyGrayson · 26/12/2021 23:21

I have a jewellery stacking cone at the side of both sinks in my house so I can take it off and leave it somewhere safe when washing up/showering etc. I find them really useful 😊

RosesAndHellebores · 26/12/2021 23:53

I don't take it off except for making pastry. I have had it for 32 years. The wedding ring 6 months less and my eternity ring is only 22.

Over the years I have had to have my rings resized and tbf I did once lose a diamond from my engagement ring (insurance) and the setting had to be reset when the sapphire flew out and was quickly found.

I broke my wrist in the summer and whilst we were able to get off my engagement and eternity rings, my wedding ring had to be cut off. I had to wait until the swelling went down to have it repaired but it came back as good as new.

I wear gardening gloves. I don't do any hiysework.

Frazzled2207 · 26/12/2021 23:55

Wear all the time except when in the shower

Redshoeblueshoe · 27/12/2021 00:03

I only wear mine if I'm going on a night out. And that's not happened much over the last 2 years.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2021 00:11

On a cost per wear basis, it's one of my best buys.

bluejelly · 27/12/2021 00:27

I take mine off for washing up, exercise and painting. Always leave it in the same place though.

ShippingNews · 27/12/2021 00:35

I wear it all the time - it's a solitaire setting so it sticks out a bit , but you soon get used to it. If you take it off to wash your hands you'll lose it, guaranteed.

Bluesarestillblue · 27/12/2021 00:53

Took all my rings off at the beginning of the pandemic (pre lockdown) so that I could thoroughly wash my hands. They’ve not been back on since

TheTeaFairy · 27/12/2021 08:38

Beautiful ring, OP 💫
I haven't taken mine off since my wedding day a decade ago, but it's an eternity-style wedding ring, with rub-over stones, so there's nothing to catch on anything/anyone Wink

StCharlotte · 27/12/2021 08:55

Have you needed to take it off for security like the airport?

No. I don't think even the Duchess of Cambridge's monster ring would set off the machines.

Mine stays on 24/7.

LyraVega · 27/12/2021 09:03

Pre pregnancy i would wear it all through the day and take it off in the shower and for bed. When I took it off it would sit on a little ring dish next to the bed. I didn't like to wear it to bed as it has a raised setting and I scratched myself in the face with it a number of times. Thinking about it if I was doing any kind of "abrasive" cleaning I would take it off so as not to damage it as well.

Washing hands etc I found fine as I just used to kind of move the ring up and down a bit to feel clean.

Not I'm pregnant it doesn't fit on my swollen fingers when I first get up and I always forget to put it on later in the day so I haven't worn it in a while! My wedding ring is half a size bigger so still fits fine and I wear that more often but still take it off over night and put it in my little ring dish.

If I'm ever out and about eg staying in a hotel, and take my ring off overnight then I will put it in the coin section of my purse so as not to lose it / forget it / knock it off the side and lose it etc
