How do you do daily life with an engagement ring!?

DH got me a fancy ring yesterday, I didn’t get one a decade ago as we couldn’t afford it. I absolutely love it but didn’t wear it today because - well, wasn’t sure if I should! I’ve googled but I’m not a glamourous newly engaged person having brunch with my girlfriends, I am changing nappies, it’s a pandemic and I’m washing hands thoroughly.

I really want to wear it every day, but I have questions such as what do you do at work when you go to the loo? The articles say don’t ever take it off in public? Do you sleep with it on? Put it on as soon as you wake up? Keep it in its ring box? Carry a ring box around in handbag? How do you make sure your hands are washed thoroughly under the ring? Cleaning and hoovering, do you take it off or wear gloves over? Any other tips I should be conscious of?

Mine comes off when I cook and changing nappies (when I had a baby).

I remember mine felt uncomfortable and conspicuous for a few months but before long forgot all about it!

I'm not a good example.

I wore it all the time, except for doing very messy jobs, until the day I lost the diamond from it...

I take my wedding and engagement rings off at night as I don't like sleeping with jewellery on and when I'm in the shower or cleaning/diy etc but wear it for pretty much everything else

RedRobin100 · 27/12/2021 13:45

I never take it off. It’s not over clunky though.

Safest place for it is on your finger.

RedRobin100 · 27/12/2021 13:45

Also you just get used to it

ScarlettDarling · 28/12/2021 18:27

It’s gorgeous op

I had a beautiful engagement ring however I’m a nurse so we are not allowed rings with stones so it would come off never lost it but managed to wear it otherwise just be careful

gingercat02 · 28/12/2021 19:47

I'm not allowed to wear stoned rings at work so so take it off at bedtime and put it back on when I get in from work. Rarely take it off any other time apart from baking involving your hands

Wear all my rings all the time - only take them off to clean them

Thank you @ScarlettDarling and @TheTeaFairy.

I don’t do any housework - I really like your approach @RosesAndHellebores!

No scratched faces, I’ve been wearing it constantly since Monday and am comfortable going to loo and washing my hands with it now. I’m going to take the advice of only taking it off when there is a known place to put it, like at home. It’s actually quite useful during nappy changes as it holds the toddler’s attention and keeps them still! With exercise, i did find my wedding rings made huge tough calluses on my palms from when I gripped ropes or bars, but I am well past that sort of fitness class stage of my life now. I will buy some cones from Oliver Bonas to put in strategic places. I used to have a practical job and was wary of degloving accidents but shouldn’t be a problem now.

Hope everyone is enjoying the lovely in between time of the season.

I turn the ring round when I'm on the Tube so the diamond shows in the palm of my hand.

I know someone that had a tiny diamond set into the ring underneath of her large diamond ring. When she turned it round it looked like a very modest ring.

EspeciallyD · 05/12/2022 21:40

If I had to take mine off every time I went somewhere without DH I'd virtually never wear it.
